The Rec Complex of Fairview Heights: Opinions

Positive experience: I just got purchased a membership yesterday. I do have recommendations as far as customer service goes. I do recommend that when someone gets a membership, maybe you offer them a tour so they know where everything is located, Also maybe offer them the class schedule. Or see if the new member has any questions.. Unfortunately my experience was not so great. I basically paid for my member ship and was left on my own.... I had no idea where the locker room was. I still have no idea where/what is offered at the facility..
Fantastic experience: Everything is perfect, clean, organized excellent staff very friendly. The instructors zumba class and aqua fit are amazing
Fantastic experience: It’s beautiful place and the people are so nice!
Positive experience: I like the rec, but one problem. It has to stay open a bit longer on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Fantastic experience: I wish they had a section on their homepage entitled "Meet Our Team" that shows the team members running this facility. Because they are doing a wonderful job!
Negative experience: Buyer beware if you take the Puckleball lessons with Cal you might not get Cal registration form never mentions Wendy who instructs as well. Brock also allowed a lady to take Pickleball and not pay. She took the class said to Brock at the front desk she could not register online it was full. He said if you already took the class it's fine. The rest of us paid. Notified the director she responded it was a miscommunication did not apologize did not say will make sure it does not happen again. They lady was trying to pay Brock just let it go the miscommunication is that Brock does not know his job. Based on the reviews I totally get it.
Negative experience: I loved The Rec until I had my kids' birthday party there. So much misinformation, we couldn't decorate our room in advance despite being told that we could, and they didn't bring the food until we'd been in the party room for 20 minutes. Multiple guests just left before food because it was taking so long and was so unorganized. Also, they spelled my kids' names wrong and wouldn't fix it. I'm so embarrassed. It's the worst party I've ever hosted and will now have to send apologies to our guests.
Fantastic experience: easy to find, great sports complex
Fantastic experience: Great place! Nicest employees! Lots of fun activities!
Fantastic experience: 5 stars isn’t enough. I had my son’s birthday party here and everything was great. Staff is extremely friendly and made our experience stress free. We were even greeted at the door with a smiling face. Unfortunately I can’t remember everyone’s name, but I really appreciate the kindness. My son and I will definitely be back!
Fantastic experience: Loved the activities! Good track and paths
Fantastic experience: Always nice
Negative experience: Extremely rude people that answer their phones. I thought it was just the kids that work there but an older lady was just as obnoxious. She must be the one training them. I canceled our membership and went to the Y because of her.
Positive experience: Everything is perfect from staff to service expect for the lack of workout equipment
Positive experience: Great place just with they would open up eailer. 5am all week and weekend would be nice!
Fantastic experience: Had a great time in the pool.
Fantastic experience: The Rec is great recreation complex. There is a great pool for kids a full set of modern gym equipment basketball courts and climbing area

Thanks for the great review, Deb! We are so glad you enjoyed coming in to see us, and glad you enjoyed pickleball as well!
Fantastic experience: Held our daughters 11th bday here. The Rock Climbing is a lot of fun. Nice pool area and party room provided. We will return!
Thanks for the amazing review, Patricia! We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review, and we are so glad to know that we could help celebrate such a great birthday! We can't wait to see you again for more Clip 'n Climb and pool time!
Negative experience: Got the family membership so I could work out with my 12 year old while my 3 and 5 year old can hang out in childcare area. In 2 months I've been able to use childcare 2 times because of the extremely limited hours and my schedule. That would be fine. We could use the rock wall and waterslide and everything would be great. They are never open. We've not gotten to use them 1 time. We pay $70 a month to not be able to use the features we wanted in a gym. Cancelling our membership and going somewhere else. Why pay extra for things that you can never use? I'm going to a different gym
Hi there, Misty. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know about your experience with us, and we are disappointed about the visits that you had. We understand the frustration, and please give us a call at 618-489-2040 if you would like to discuss these points.
Fantastic experience: I love it, there's plenty to do for everyone in your family. There's a basketball court, they have pickleball games, ping-pong tables, swimming pool, indoor track, weight room, workout classes, personal trainers available, swim instructors available, they even hire and certify life guards.
Thanks so much for the review, Michelle! We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review, and we are so glad to know that you enjoy coming to the Rec! We hope to see you in again soon!
Fantastic experience: I enjoyed being on the treadmill.
Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review, Carmelita! We appreciate you taking the time to let us know about your experience, and we hope to see you again soon.
Negative experience: Was told my daughter was not aloud in the swim lanes because kids are not aloud ,ok that's fine, only to see that he let a mother and daughter swim in the swimming lane like me and my daughter was ,I was was set on fire now , what the difference? I went to an administrator to ask what was the difference between the two of us he could not tell me but you what it does not matter because me or my family or my friends don't have to spend money at this horrible place that would allow me or my child to be treated in such a manner ...GOOD!! DAY!! TO!!? YOU!!! ALL!!!!
Hi there, Ondre. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review with your experience. We are disappointed about the experience that you had with us, and would love for you to have a better visit with us. Please give us a call at 618-489-2040 if you would like to discuss with us your experience and how we can better your past visit.
Negative experience: I have had several issues with my membership, which has led to our account being overcharged. Every time I go up there after work to try and resolve the issue, no one that can handle it is there. You have to come during the daytime. I'm at work during the daytime as well so that's not possible.
Hi there. If you are still having issues with your membership, please give us a call at 618-489-2040, and we would love to help remedy this.
Negative experience: Don’t recommend. There are others close by to check out 1. Went for a day pass to check out before purchasing membership, glad I did! Charged $25 for myself and 2 year old. We only got to stay 1 hour for reason number 2. So it’s too steep in my opinion. 2. We were enjoying our time in the pool when another family came in. All was fine until the mother began aggressively and repeatedly dunking her children under the water. This lasted for over 30 minutes at which point I left. This episode took up a majority of the pool as there were 5-6 children leaving the rest of the families with small and limited spaces. The mother continued to yell and cuss. While dunking the older children she would be ignoring the two small girls who screamed multiple times in fear because they were not able to swim or touch where they were. Additionally, the mother was not wearing a swimsuit, instead underwear and a tank top 7 sizes too small resulting in her breasts becoming exposed multiple times during the struggle to hold her children under water. I only wish I was making this up. 3. The teeny bopper life guard is too busy playing on her phone and drinking her iced coffee to do anything, so don’t think you are safe. Overall I’m really disappointed, I’m trying to find a nice gym that is family friendly. This place is not safe. I know this is one experience, but if this is the behavior this establishment allows then it will happen again.
Hi there, Myranda. Thank you for your review. We’re sorry to hear you had a frustrating experience at The REC, but appreciate you bringing these issues to our attention. Your feedback allows us the opportunity to work with our staff to create a better experience for everyone in the future.

Fantastic experience: Love the yoga classes with Jenny and Anvetta. Staff is very friendly and the huge pool with splash pad, lazy river, waterslide and swim lanes are FANTASTIC! Pool and gym get alot of natural light. When I am at the pool it feels like I'm outside!
Thanks for the fantastic review, Joy! We appreciate you taking the time to let us know about your visits with us, and we can't wait until your next visit in to see us for class or the pool!
Fantastic experience: The facility has an excellent pool area and workout room.
Thanks for the awesome 5 stars, Roger! We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review, and we're so glad that you enjoyed coming in to see us! We hope to see you in again soon!
Negative experience: The Pool area is dangerously loud with sound reading hitting well over 120 decibels.
Hi there. Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your concerns regarding the sound levels in the pool area. We appreciate the notice, and we will look into ensuring that the pool is as accessible for all as possible regarding noise levels. We hope to have another opportunity to see you again for a better experience.
Negative experience: I took my family there 8/14 for the first time and was very disappointed. They had 1 lifeguard on duty for 20 swimmers. The water slide and the kid area was out of order. And the floors in the locker room are very slippery, I slipped and fell on the locker room floor. I’ve been to many pools and have never fallen. (I am not looking for anything for falling.) I just want parents to be aware that for the cost to swim is not worth it between the safety concerns and lack of amenities.
Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your concerns, Josh. We appreciate the feedback, and letting us know about this will allow us to thoroughly investigate and provide more training for our employees. We appreciate the concerns, and we hope to be able to see you again soon for a better experience
Fantastic experience: I love it! Everything is so clean. I love that they open early and I can get my workout before I go to work. Instructors are super nice!

Hi there, Rozzy! Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, and we are so glad to know that the early morning classes are so helpful! We look forward to seeing you in again!
Fantastic experience: Went there to vote early. The people were helpful &, intelligent.
Negative experience: Is the Waterslide EVER open? We moved from out of State, & have experienced other Rec centers who keep there waterslides open the entire time! The last one had 3 waterslides Always open!! We signed up, & the price was steep compared to other nicer Community facilities we've been members too! However the kids really enjoyed the indoor Waterslides previously! That's where the major disappointment lies! We went the first time & closed! We asked if they could open it, they finally opened for 10 mins then randomly closed it for the entire 3 hrs we were there! I thought ok I'm gonna look this up, they state online hrs for the Waterslide to be open! So we purposely went during those hrs! We arrived it was open the kids go straight over, & right as they are getting there a life gaurd shuts the gate! Seriously, we were there 2 hrs, my son asked if they were going to open it again, & he gave him a time, we waited around for the time only for it to - shocker not be opened! Not impressed, if you advertise a Waterslide as one of your main attractions it should probably be open! Especially when you say it will be open! I'm not sure what to think at this point, it's pretty expensive for a mediocre pool! Disappointed this should be a awesome place to go!
Hi there, Jo. WE appreciate you taking the time to let us know about your experience, and we are disappointed in the time that you had with us at the Rec. Due to an employee shortage, the slide is open by request only. We hope to have another opportunity to see you again and hopefully provide you with a better experience.
Negative experience: We tried to visit the aquatic center. I called the night before ti verify the pool would be open, the man I spoke to said it was closed that day but would be open the next. When we arrived the next day, the pool was closed. Not great customer service. Left with two very upset kids.
Positive experience: We took our family here to try out the pool and it was just...okay, with the potential to be better if the staff were friendlier. The pool hours are advertised from 11:00am-3:30pm. We arrived only to discover the waterslide was closed. It was a bit of a bummer because that's why we came. Later on they opened it up for about 15 minutes to let swimmers through, then they closed it again. About an hour after, I asked if they were planning on opening it back up and was told they would. Another 30 minutes went by so I asked again and was told that the slide isn't meant to run all the time (we've been to many indoor rec centers with a similar set up and have never experienced this) but they'd open it up for us at 1:30. I left to go to the locker room and came back out to the pool at 1:45 and still no slide. I asked again for them to open it up only to get an eye roll from the lifeguard who reluctantly got another staff member to get it going for everyone, they shut it down again by 2pm. My suggestion - if you advertise a waterslide for your business but don't plan on running it during public hours, at least post the times it will be available and/or be kind when customers ask about it.
Fantastic experience: A wonderful place with great facilities and staff.
Negative experience: Not enforcing the mask mandate.
Fantastic experience: Kids love The Rec!
Fantastic experience: Love this place very clean family place
Fantastic experience: We went to their first egg hunt in the pool, very organized and you got 10 eggs, then after you collected them you went in the party room to pick your prizes! My granddaughter Anastasia had a great time! Thank you life guards!!
Fantastic experience: I had my Godson and decided to take him swimming. We have a membership but not my Godson, we paid $8 so he could swim. He had a good time.
Fantastic experience: Love this Rec center! Lots of open machines and a good walking track.
Fantastic experience: I took a tour of this complex last month, this month I signed up and I like the place. It is very clean very well organized and safe
Fantastic experience: Amazing place. So much fun. The staff's wonderful
Positive experience: Very nice sports complex. Excellent for families. Clean and well maintained.
Positive experience: Very nice and clean. The staff was very helpful.
Fantastic experience: The place is a great place for family or just for yourself. The staff is nice and very helpful. We all just love it
Fantastic experience: I enjoyed to swimming pool and its not very deep at all great for children even for smaller children have there own swim area. They have a whirlpool and a small lazy river area to enjoy. The staff was helpful and polite. Its a nice place as well.
Negative experience: The front desk employees are rude and lazy.Poorly run by the city. Not as clean as other gyms.Cobwebs in the fitness room(see pics below).
Hi there, John. We are happy to see you visited The REC for your health and wellness needs. It’s disheartening to hear that you were not pleased with the customer service and cleanliness of our facility during your visit, and we truly apologize. We’ll investigate your concerns promptly to ensure immediate resolution. We appreciate you taking the time to express your concerns, if you would like to discuss anything further, please call us at 618-489-2040.
Fantastic experience: I had my Godson and decided to take him swimming. We have a membership but not my Godson, we paid $8 so he could swim. He had a good time.
Negative experience: I loved this place until they decided people don't have to wear masks at group sessions. 5+ adults in a closed small gym room, breathing heavily without masks made me utterly uncomfortable so I left. The fact they think that's ok is upsetting i stopped going. Other than that friendly staff, awesome equipments, instructors are great, and killer swimming pool! I loved this place...
Negative experience: I really wanted to love this place, but I am so upset with how they handle situations with foster families. It may very well be different for members, but since the onset of COVID we have not chosen to maintain a membership at any kind of a gym. We did however sign our two bio kids up for swim lessons there. Well our family went from 2 to 4 kiddos pretty quickly, but to be fair to my bio kiddos I didn't want to cancel swim lessons. Unfortunately I will have to do so if they even allow it. I wanted to bring my new 4 year old foster son to play in the splash pad area while my other sons did their lesson. I called to find out the protocol. They said I would have to purchase a day pass. Even though it was only going to be for 40 minutes, and even though the splash pad isn't even on during swim lessons, I said okay. They said it was going to be $10. I asked if they had discounts for foster children, like a lot of places do, but they do not. That's fine. $10 a week is doable. They just told me that I have to stand in the water with him, but it's not very deep so I can just roll up my pants since I didn't bring a swimsuit, fine. I'll note that I also have a 3-month-old foster son, but sure, I can hold him and stand in the water in my pants. So then I arrive at the Rec Plex and then they throw it at me that I have to pay $15 for a day pass for myself. Even though I am already paying for expensive swim lessons, I have to pay $10 for my foster son, and $15 for me to stand in the water in my clothes supervising him. So now that's up to $25 per week. The one "nice thing" they did for me is say they were not going to charge me for my 3-month-old infant who cannot get in the water... Isn't that special?! They said it like this was some sort of treat. I understand that they are probably hurting due to the pandemic, but is it really fair to charge people in this way? Especially foster families who are trying to help kids from hard places whose family situation could change week to week? And I did fully explain to three people working there my situation including one "manager" who even checked with another "manager". I'm not asking for freebies, but couldn't $10 for my foster child's be sufficient for 40 minutes of play in a splash pad that isn't turned on? There are so many businesses that are fantastic with foster families and kids from hard places. This is not one. Disappointed.
Fantastic experience: This place ROCKS
Fantastic experience: Great spot for the family. Decent work out area. Has all the essentials for the most part
Fantastic experience: Best gym in the area
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place to work out.
Fantastic experience: Great swimming facility for families.
Fantastic experience: First time going in this place and I was empressed, my sister said she was thinking about looking into their gym, it has a variety of activities for every age group...I went there for a vision board event and enjoyed myself fully, in the future maybe I might host an event there?!
Fantastic experience: Really nice place. Lots of natural lighting. All new place.
Fantastic experience: Convenient and clean. Lots of classes to choose from. Friendly staff!
Fantastic experience: My family and I have been members since the opening. We love the prices for the total amount of value we get. My wife loves to take the kids to the year round swimming and mini indoor water park. I love it for the workout area and basketball court. My son and I can come in basically at any time and get a hoop to ourselves for a basketball workout. My wife and I utilize the upstairs indoor track to the fullest. Not to mention the great party areas and AMAZING wall climbing. To top it all off, the staff are incredible. They all seem young, but the mannerisms and professional behavior is above and beyond any gym that I have been apart of my entire life. I highly recommend dropping any other gym and becoming a member of Fairview Heights REC
Negative experience: A $80 membership fee on top of a $30 membership cost is insane to pay, a new member will have to pay $110 to get in for the first time.
Negative experience: Very upset went to the rec in hopes to use the water slide and it was closed down during operating hrs had I known that I would have saved my money for a time when everything was open and work but now just out that money for me and my daughter and getting charged more for living in the next town over but anyways first time there and very possible the last time as well
Positive experience: Fun but a bit pricey
Positive experience: The pool water is always cold.
Positive experience: Well other than they have some employees watching you like bouncers at a club lmao . It's all good. Ooops taken another star away for the basket ball court being cut in half for I assume some well paid soccer . Should've figured that in the building plans so half court for all the basketball players well till it's nice enough for soccer outside but then it's nice enough for outside basket ball
Fantastic experience: Best gym in the area
Positive experience: Great facility overall, but as a new "business," naturally there is a ton of room for growth, especially in the area of youth programming, advertising, and member discounts. Having moved from the local/regional YMCA, we were accustomed to (and recommended to Rec member recruiters) programs such as "School's Out!" which was a HUGE bonus for working parents because it was essentially a day camp program for school aged kids with working parents on days when schools close (Pulaski day, teacher inservice days, spring break etc.). The Rec offered such a program in their catalog, but it was mis-represented and is actually a very poorly designed non-member recruitment push. It isn't a program for children and has no real benefit to parents as labeled in the catalog. Management didn't take member feedback seriously or professionally, although front desk staff did, because they're experienced in both customer satisfaction and communication. The program catalog does not provide registration details, cut-off date, or information regarding communication regarding classes being cancelled due to little or no enrollment, and assumes members get details via social media. There also seems to be very limited and almost hostile communication between Parks and Rec staff, front desk staff, and area/zone management within the facility. This was communicated to me by more than one staff member in different departments. Despite the registration date having passed, I was able to enroll our daughter in a swimming class, however she was not on any roster. When an unforeseen scheduling conflict occurred, I called The Rec immediately and no one could tell me if we could hit another time slot on that day or make up the class later in the week. Instead, I was told to call on Monday when P&R staff would be available. This wouldn't have happened at the Y because there is cross-communication between departments, and typically anyone who answers the phone can assist pretty quickly. Although more geographically convenient to us, this is *definitely* not the Y (and we had access in MO and IL) with regard to customer service, and there is a lot of room for growth. Having said that, they're new and this was a huge undertaking. They have a lot to learn and will hopefully grow. There are amazingly successful local models they could try to replicate as they push for memberships. For now, for us, it's a beautiful and clean facility with wonderful equipment and not much else.
Negative experience: I used to love this rec center. Today, my son ran out crying, because they let the older guys literally take over the basketball court. There was no way he could play on the side basketball goals because they were playing a "3 on 3" game. He tried to play on the side basketball goals and they took the basketball goal from him. If this continues, I'll cancel my membership. This isn't fair to paying members. Plus the entire gym had a loud marijuana smell that made my head hurt. I hate the direction this is going.
Positive experience: To many restrictions in the pool. Teenagers with authority
Fantastic experience: My son loves it
Rachel, we are so glad to hear your son enjoys our facility. Thank you for the positive review and please do not hesitate to let us know how we can continue to provide an excellent experience!
Fantastic experience: We had our youth outing at the rec center on Saturday. It was a combo party with the pool and clip and climb. The Hostess Tashona (i hope i have the name correct) was Fantastic and very nice. They were very organized and on time with everything. Our youth group from Gethsemane Church of the Living God was from the ages of 3-12 with a total of 22 attending. The staff was very friendly. The lifeguards were very alert. Thanks Rec Center.

They work very diligently and it will provide them with great encouragement to keep doing what they are doing. Thank you, once again, for your recommendation and review.
Fantastic experience: The place is great. Pool is always open to everyone even with classes going on membership prices for a family of 5 breaks down to about $12 a month per person so much for the whole family
Fantastic experience: A great place to get together with friends and have fun or exercise.

Fantastic experience: A very comfortable, safe place to workout, swim... and ROCKCLIMB?! Are you kidding me? That is amazing! You can have birthday parties for everything. Classes you take. And even water yoga! That's insane! The water in the pool is always clean and the lifegards dont take an eye off you or kids. The workers are very nice and helpful. The locker rooms are very clean, and the showers already have soap ready to be used! The indoor track is amazing, it has a side for running and a side for walking, you can bring a stroller for your baby! They have a game room, and nice sensory chairs for everybady! I definitely wont be leaving!
Fantastic experience: Pricy if you arwnt a FH resident. But fun and has a lot of potential.
Fantastic experience: Awesome rec center for the family

Hi, Scott! Thank you for your recommendation, positive review, and sharing GREAT pictures of our facility! We are happy to hear that you have been enjoying our facilities, including the pool. We put member satisfaction as top priority and we are committed to our members. We look forward to continuing to serve you!
Positive experience: It looks like a really awesome place for fun and fitness but the prices are wayyy too high for a family of 8. The highest package I seen on the website was for a family of 5. You have the option to pay $10 per person a month over the limit of 5 people. It would cost us over $95 a month and to me that’s not worth it. I did not see an option for pay by the day or I would maybe consider it because that’s better than by month and I could pay for only the days we would be going there which probably wouldn’t be too often anyway because we have busy lifestyles.
Hi, Chrissy! Thank you for your feedback and we apologize in the delay in response. Although our monthly membership may not be the best fit for you, we do have daily rates available to enjoy our facility! Let us know how we can help you and your family!
