Spectrum Fitness & Medical Wellness Southdowns: Opinions
Positive experience: It’s a gym, could use some TLC though with some of the equipment
Positive experience: It's pretty good overall. It is very clean and the staff is nice. The machines are good and the dumbbells go up very high. After working out here for about 4 years I still get the impression that they do not want to invest back in the gym. When something breaks it takes them forever to fix it. The barbells are not very good at all. Most have almost no knurling left on them. There are more than one that are bent bad enough that it makes me nervous to bench with them. The treadmills seem to break very frequently and are extremely slow to be replaced. The two that have been replaced were replaced with really old used models. This must have been months later after they were broken. There are three that broke many weeks ago. They have had out of order signs hanging on them since. They recently just removed 2 them and did not replace them with new treadmills. Some of the buttons on the working treadmills are worn out and are annoying to press. Most of the aerobic machines face the TVs. They always have the news on 4 of the 5 TVs which I don't like. I think it costs a lot more than it should. It is about $38 a month after tax. This is not including the random $60-80 annual fee sometime in the year. Whenever you sign for 6 months it will automatically renew. To cancel it costs $55. I probably wouldn't have a problem with this if I could figure out where the money goes. It doesn't go into new barbells, treadmills, or maintaining the equipment in a timely manner. In four years I have only ever seen them replace a small section of gym flooring, reupholster a couple machines and paint one of the walls. Oh and they got an assortment of lat pulldown attachments for like $100 on Amazon.
Positive experience: If you're on the lookout for a local gym that feels like home, look no further! This place is a true hidden gem for fitness enthusiasts located in Southdowns. I've been a regular here for a few months, and I can't recommend it enough. The first thing you'll notice is the cleanliness – it's spotless, which is something I truly appreciate. A lot of the larger gyms lack cleanliness whereas this gym takes pride in it. Plus, the equipment, while old, is still top-notch. Rather nostalgic to be using gear that's stood the test of time and is still in great shape. What truly sets this gym apart, though, is the atmosphere. The staff is incredibly friendly and always ready to lend a helping hand. And speaking of the people, you'll quickly get to know the familiar faces – it's like a little community within these walls. It's motivating to see the same folks pushing themselves day after day.
Fantastic experience: I love spectrum at Southdowns! If you have a terrible workout, you can walk right out of the gym and over to the Bulldog for a beer. Only cons are that the WiFi can be a little spotty sometimes on the women’s side of the gym and the workout equipment isn’t super up to date!
Fantastic experience: I've lost 42lbs here. Never over crowded and friendly staff
Positive experience: Great place to work out. Highly recommend the trading programs.
Fantastic experience: Was in town for 7 days, and was looking for a local gym to work out. For background, I'm a gymrat - mostly do heavy lifting / powerlifting. (bench, squat, deadlift, weighted dips, shoulder press). I was looking for a gym with free weights, and an open workout space to do cardio (shadow boxing, MMA training) I found this gym close by the hotel I was staying at and joined as a guest. I worked out 6 days, and found it was a great gym. Hours: 5/5 stars. they open early 4:30 am. and are open most days til 10. sat and sun, hrs are shorter... but that was fine.. worked out afternoons sat sun. Cleanliness: 5 /5 stars. equipment was clean, the clientelle for the most part put everything away where it was supposed to go. layout is well thought out and spacious. equipment and stations are grouped by muscle groups, and categories.. cardio treadmills, free weights, trx, dumbells.. etc.. Equipment: 5/5 old school equipment mixed with newer stations. Some of the machines are older think 1980s... but they do a great job maintaining the cables, pulleys, and pads. anyone who knows the frustration of cables sticking understands.. the equipment is well lubricated, and runs smooth. the free weight stations are all level and solid. Some of it is old school, but that's what i prefer. they have a mirrored group fitness room, that i used to shadow box, and do kicking... and two other areas which look like rehab areas. staff: 5/5 the guys and gals I spoke with every day were very helpful. it's a big place, and when I asked if they had an area i could any particular exercise they were helpful. Also since i'm a stranger to Baton Rouge, I was looking for somewhere to find some lighter fare for lunch... the front desk trainer was great ... made a tonne of suggestions for restaurants, and what to order. Overall... I was very pleased. The gym was nicer than my hometown gym. I saw a bunch of ridiculously critical reviews.. clearly someone has some vindictive issues and was over the top. I enjoyed using the gym, and rate it 5/5. afterwards I spoke with the manager/ owner... and thanked her... I have no complaints..
Fantastic experience: can i have a single parent package?
Negative experience: The facilities are very poorly maintained. There are no doors on the bathroom stalls in the men's locker room. The showers are single stalls with a curtain which gets wet and moldy when used; they never seem to be cleaned. If it was a normal communal gym shower they could at least pressure was the whole thing and bleach it. Those are way more sanitary. The sauna is broken. They posted a sign a few weeks ago saying all these things would be getting fix that week, but they never did fix them. The steam room works, but the temperature on it is actually way to high, which makes it a little unbearable. The price isn't bad, but then, they upcharge for every little thing: towel service is an extra 10. A cup of water costs a dollar. Renting a locker is extra, and so on. Honestly I'm a little surprised they are even still in business
Fantastic experience: ♥️
Negative experience: I pay almost $60 per month to be a member at this gym in southdowns and not only do they now charge $1 for a towel but they also charge $1 for a cup of ice. They have now started closing at 6pm on Friday and Saturday and 8pm on Sunday. Who does that? And now to add insult to injury you are only allowed to workout for a maximum of 2 hours per day. The owner, Donna, is absolutely the most rude person I have met and I can promise her that not only has she lost my wife and I membership but the 10+ people I have gotten to join this gym in southdowns will be cancelling as well. Thanks Donna.
Fantastic experience: Perfect place for beginners or advanced trainers. I particularly enjoy it because the variety of equipment. The staff is impartial and the members are welcoming.
Positive experience: Okay place I haven't joined
Negative experience: Nice gym but price is not worth it. I was here for work for 2 months and paid a $50 fee just to sign up but here is the kicker.....I canceled March 15th and they charged me for April too because I didn't give 30 days notice of cancelation. Straight BS. Paid $250 for 2 months. This place is a rip off.
Positive experience: Old equipment, no masks, lots of people on their phone. Clean gym overall
Fantastic experience: Love the place, it’s up-to-date it’s clean they have childcare and all the classes are awesome
Fantastic experience: Love the silver sneakers class. Cheryl great teacher

Fantastic experience: Love Spectrum!!!
Thanks for the great review Harriette!
Positive experience: So far definitely has been my favorite gym in the Baton Rouge area so far, the accommodations in facility are outstanding for the price
thanks for the great review Rick!
Fantastic experience: Best gym ever! With the nicest staff! My favorite place to workout!! Recommend to all my friends.
Thanks for the great review Ryan!
Negative experience: As many of the reviewers stated - they make cancellation impossible. After several calls, and a manager NEVER being there (must be a tactic to avoid cancellations), I had to drive to a location to fill out a form to cancel.
Hello Gregory Let me start by apologizing for any lapse in our service that may have led to your regretful experience. I understand it can be an inconvenience, but a written 30-Day cancellation notice is required to terminate your membership and must be submitted in person or by mail. Our facilities are always staffed during our business hours and a management team member is on site 30+ hours a week. It’s our policy to have all member service staff trained to provide assistance with cancellations, and also to not require that a manger be present for members to submit a 30-Day Cancellation notice. If there’s anything I can do to help you further please email me at [email protected] Derek Morgan General Manager Spectrum Fitness and Medical Wellness
Fantastic experience: Buen gimnasio fácil de llegar. Tranquilo. Hay hasta máquina para broncear. Muy bueno amplio y hay todo tipo de máquinas de peso y de cardio. Muy completo.
Negative experience: Moved across town no longer making this gym convenient, management would not let me out of the last few months of the contract.... who does contracts anymore? The gym equipment and general condition of the place leaves a bit to be desired for.
Negative experience: There is never a manager around. They are so quick to sign you up with bs contracts but be warned it is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to cancel. I went in and signed papers. I constantly called and was told a manager would call me back to cancel. Never did. This whole process has been so frustrating and it seems like no employees who work there know how to do anything without the manager. Who is never there. I sincerely hope no one else is looped into this ridiculous and unprofessional gym.
Fantastic experience: My favorite gym. Great service, the place is clean. Great for individual exercise and group exercises. The staff are helpful at all times.
Negative experience: Not a bad gym and all but equipment doesn’t get replaced when it needs to be. Two Olympic bars are bent and one is stripped of all knurling and ones got enough flaking to leave chrome chips all over.
Negative experience: These reviews have to be staged by the business owners. The actual workout facilities are fine. The locker rooms, especially the mens lockeroom is gross, outdated, dirty, there are big holes and missing ceiling panels above the showers. Who knows what is happening up there. AND their membership policy? $60 a month for a mandatory two years!!!! I moved--and admittedly wasn't satisfied with the place anyway--and they said I needed to provide "proof of move" to cancel! If I lived anywhere within 55 miles or something like that of a Spectrum facility, I couldn't get out of my "contract" which I was never provided a copy of nor was that (lack of a) cancelation policy explained. I'm currently debating on whether to file suit in small claims court based on principle alone and how they rip people off. This place is owned/run by crooks. The downtown YMCA is $40 a month, much nicer and you have access to the several other Y locations, training classes are free etc.
Fantastic experience: Great place to train. I love the squat racks and the deadlift platform. The staff is very professional, friendly and helpful. Its like family. Love it.
Negative experience: This place was trash. I ask how much was it monthly for a membership. He said he couldnt answer that i had to come in.
