Charm City CrossFit®: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Great trainers, COVID safe environment.
Fantastic experience: Positive: Professionalism , Quality
Fantastic experience: Such a great gym! The members are extremely friendly and outgoing, and the coaches are definitely knowledgeable when it comes to their coaching. I joined Crossfit for accountability and community, and I am getting both here :)
Thank you Ryan! We love that you're part of our fam
Positive experience: This is going to be a rather lengthy review, but an objective one. I hope they take it as constructive criticism and work to address the concerns. I was a member at CCC for little less than 6-months, even though I made a 6-month commitment (more about this below): -In terms of pricing, they are not that competitive. If I would've look a little more, I would've saved hundreds of dollars in the ~6-months I was at CCC. However, the convenience of living 5min away, maybe we could say it outweighed that. - In terms of the coaches, they are all pretty good. They seem knowledgeable on what they're doing. However, sometimes some of them spent more time on their phones than keeping an eye on the people. Some exercises are very complex, and I think an effort should be made to ensure the well-being of the patrons, rather than leaving them to lift whatever the person think they can, and have terrible form prone to injury. This is a serious safety issue that should be corrected asap. Patrons are paying hundreds of dollars to be trained, not to just be left on their own, because the phone is more important. Another major pet-peeve was how unprepared they showed up to class. They will study the workout as people are trickling in, and sometimes reading it as we go through it. As a former trainer, I found it very off-putting. In my opinion, they should already know what the workout is, because patrons don't know, then everyone is lost and time is wasted. - In terms of culture, they are honestly great, no complains there. People are friendly, and so are coaches. - In terms of the facilities and equipment, they are okay. The building has the Baltimore charm, but it is quite small. This means that half of the equipment is upstairs, and often there are not enough weights for everyone. It really depends who come to class, you either get to used your desired weights, or less because someone took them first. My main issue here, were the floors. They are super uneven, and sometimes they are huge gaps. This lead to multiple (really) minor injuries on my feet that I just pushed through, but not everyone would be okay with that. Floor gaps and bumps could be a safety concern, especially when we are lifting hundreds of pounds above our heads in occasions. - In terms of add-ons, the phone-app is terrible. Although this is not CCC fault, they should probably switch companies. The servers are often down, and it has a lot of bugs. - Like many of us sometimes, I did not read the contract carefully, and it took me off guard that payment is every 28 days (4 weeks), instead of the same day every month. This might seem like little, but taking into consideration the year has 52 weeks, a 12-month commitment ends up being 48-weeks, that's an entire other month you'll have to pay if you want a full year. This seems rather sneaky, but it is right there in the contract, so that one is on me. Overall, I would give a 3.5, but Google don't let me do that. This doesn't mean I wouldn't come back to CCC, because I would if things change for the better. I know it was a challenging year, but I know they can do better. It was pretty obvious that membership was dwindling over the past few months. Anyhow, I found another gym where coaches do take extensive amount of time with patrons if they see bad form, or people trying to lift more than they should. Is also considerably cheaper, bigger facilities, and the added bonus of showers.
Hey Elmer, thank you for the review. We appreciate your input as customer opinions are the best way for us to grow. We have analyzed and corrected a few items you have brought up and would love to share them. We feel we are a very approachable group, in fact we send out regular emails to all members asking for their input and feedback so that we can constantly improve the experience we that we provide. We are a little worried that you did not address these concerns with us sooner so we could have helped you progress towards your fitness goals prior to leaving the community. Thank you for the kind words about most of our coaching staff. We will definitely let them know you appreciate them. We have done a deep evaluation with everyone on staff and we did discover a coach had been not meeting our standards of care. This coach is no longer on our team. We are confident the coaches we have now are delivering the highest quality of service. Any/all gaps in the top layer rubber flooring have been fixed. The back left corner of the concrete on the first floor does have a mild slope to it which, unfortunately, since the building is deemed a “historic carriage house” by the city we are unable to alter. The total facility area is 5,000 sq ft which in a neighborhood like Mount Vernon is a fairly significant size. In order to provide more space for members to workout we keep some of the equipment on the second floor. Everyone is here to exercise so we see this as a great opportunity to burn a couple extra calories when grabbing equipment for a workout. We also have showers available to everyone on our second floor (members do need to bring their own towel). We want to stay as competitively priced while still being able to pay our staff and meet general expenses so we just did a quick search online to see if we need to make changes to our structure and our membership rates are actually right in the mid range for CrossFit gyms in Baltimore and the surrounding areas. There are always cheaper and discount options to any good/service but in order to provide real fitness results we do need to charge a fair price for those services. Memberships run on 4 week cycles which is fairly standard and we very clearly describe the process to all members. You acknowledged understanding of this by initialing next to the description of membership and billing cycles on the membership agreement so this information should not have been a surprise. We completely agree that the app we use for members to sign in had a couple issues in the last month but after multiple long talks with their support staff we have been assured that all bugs are fixed. If issues persist we will certainly be looking into other options. Again thank you so much for your feedback and while we hate to lose you as a member of our community we hope that you are able to continue working on your fitness goals.
Fantastic experience: CrossFit can be such a challenging and intimidating sport, but the coaches try their best to create a welcoming and safe space. The atmosphere is very friendly and chill, everyone from the coaches to the members have such great energy! This gym is awesome
Thanks so much Rachel! We’re so glad to have you in our fam!
Fantastic experience: Great place! Knowledgeable coaches and great atmosphere.
Thanks Rocco! Keep on kicking butt!
Fantastic experience: Nick is awesome and offers great classes. He also does what he can to make you feel comfortable. I think CrossFit can be intimidating to newcomers and Nick does a really good job of making everyone feel comfortable and welcome no matter your fitness level.
Thanks Paige! We love having you as part of our community. Keep coming and working hard!
Fantastic experience: Great bollywood music
Fantastic experience: If you're looking for a friendly and welcoming gym, Charm City Crossfit is the gym for you. I started going to Charm City Crossfit almost three years ago when I first came here to Baltimore and didn't know what to expect. I was welcomed by a friendly gym owner, Nick Sekcenski. Nick had gone over what the gym is all about and reasonable pricing options for a young business professional straight out of college. The gym atmosphere is friendly, but it can be as competitive/intense as you want it to be base on your preference. I highly recommend this gym if you're looking for a way to create friends and become a better you!
Thanks Andy! We miss your energy since you moved!
Fantastic experience: I've been a member for 3 months now. I was invited by a friend who had been a member for over a year. To describe this gym I would say it has a low key, homey vibe for a CrossFit box. Not only are the coaches knowledgeable and can make form corrections, they are friendly and create a positive atmosphere. The members are friendly and supportive as well. The management is also responsive and care about what members want out of their gym. There is also more to offer than just CrossFit. The kickboxing classes look really fun and there are occasionally fun events to attend that are put on by the coaches. CrossFit memberships in general are not cheap, however, for everything you get at this box and the great people you will meet, it is 100% worth it and I am very happy with my decision.
Thanks Joe! We love having you a part of our community too!
Fantastic experience: I haven't been here yet but I'm on my way!
Fantastic experience: Great gym and coaches! Welcoming members. Fun workouts!
Thanks Amanda!
Fantastic experience: An amazing community of athletes.
Thanks Chris! We're so glad to have you as part of our fam!
Fantastic experience: We love calling Charm City CrossFit our neighbors! We recently added this gym to our corporate wellness program, and employees were thrilled to hear about the addition. The atmosphere at the gym is very welcoming and the trainers are incredibly knowledgeable. Whether you're an experienced CrossFitter or looking to dip your toes in, I'd definitely check them out.
Thank you so much! We love having you all at the box!
Negative experience: I was a member at Charm City CrossFit for over a year. Prior to that, I was involved in CrossFit and this was not my first experience in Crossfit. When I i first came to Baltimore from Arizona, I started looking for a nearby crossfit gym to continue my workouts like I used to in AZ. CCCF was very close to where I live so I decided to give this place a visit. I first met nick, the owner/trainer at this gym. He seemed nice, showed me around in the gym, told me about different classes that they have and different hours, and most importantly OPEN GYM HOURS, which for me was a big deal given my job and the fact that my schedule will not let me attend most of the classes(they only have few anyway) Nick said that in between classes, I am welcome to drop in and do my own workout at this gym, which was again a deal breaker for me, so I signed up! Few months went by and I realized that what nick said wasn’t completely true, they only had one or two open hour for members in the entire week!!! When the class starts, you MUST join the class and STOP your workout(this was so ridiculous) Beside that, on the weekend, when most people have the most amount of free time to go to gym, they have only ONE class on Saturdays and that is it! One hour on Saturday, where you must do the class with ALL the members in this tinny gym, and guess what, they close on Sundays!! Other classes that they claim to have such as yoga etc.. they are most of time with no one to actually coach so they stopped most of them. I finally realized that I am paying 160$ a month for 3 days a week classes that I was not able to attended most of the time due to my schedule( which was fine because I already know my schedule, but the open gym lie is huge, and the fact that you MUST take the class when you’re there and can’t do your own thing is also very ridiculous) Not to mention the small space to workout (no places for wall balls in the gym at all, only few places where you can do pull ups because the rooftop in some places is lower that other, no place for muscle ups) I had to wake nick up multiple times to actually open the gym during the few open hours that they have because he was sleeping!!!! A lot of members and trainers started to leave this gym, then I finally realized that this place was nothing but a total rip-off.
Hey Nawras, Thank you for taking the time to review our gym. We are sorry you felt you had a poor experience. We're not sure why you felt our gym was small or what gym you used to go to but we have 5,000 sq ft of workout space on two floors which is actually pretty sizeable especially for a space in a major city. We did offer open gym hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5-6pm for the first two years we were open which was outlined in the membership agreement. There were multiple times that you would show up to the gym outside of these hours and expect to workout, unfortunately for safety reasons we can not allow someone to workout outside of scheduled hours this was explained to you by the gym owner Nick and two other trainers. We also explained to you several times that we can not allow you or anyone to take up gym space doing their own workout during a class time. Several members complained about you making excessive noise and taking equipment trying to do other workouts during class times. Members pay for a membership to do CrossFit workouts and receive coaching from our trainers, it would be unfair for you to take away equipment and gym space from other paying members so you could do your own thing. Our full schedule, pricing, along with all other gym information is clearly outlined on our website and explained to anyone that walks through our doors. We offer classes 6 days a week during the most popular times of the day (as voted by the community) so our members can maximize time, we're sorry this did not always work with your schedule but again it would be unfair to everyone else to work the classes around your schedule as you requested multiple times. We explained to you when you joined and multiple times during your term here that a "globo" style or traditional gym may be a better fit for you because of your schedule, the fact that you did not like group classes, and the fact that you often ignored the coaching and instruction of classes (which puts yourself AND other members around you at risk of injury) you insisted that you wanted to stay here though. We wish you the best and hope that you have found a fitness routine that works for you.
Fantastic experience: Extremely friendly gym with knowledgeable coaches who greet clients like family at thanksgiving dinner.
Thanks Tim!
Fantastic experience: Charm City CrossFit is a box that captures what CrossFit has always intended to be - a community of like minded people who support and challenge you to be the best version of yourself both inside and outside of the gym. I’ve been a CrossFitter since 2010 and been a member of several gyms from garages to boxes with classes of 20+ people. Charm City CrossFit is among the best of them because of its emphasis on coaching and community. It may not be the size of some other gyms, but it often had what they didn’t in the level of attention I received from coaches. Garth - could coach at the best of mega boxes across the country if he wanted. His attention to detail was that good and his ability to tailor cues and instruction to each athlete second to none. Most impressive was his focus on injury prevention and going out of his way to make sure all athletes were comfortable with movements and set up to succeed. Nicole - was not only an elite athlete, but an elite coach as well. Of all the coaches I’ve had over the years, Nicole consistently has the most innovative warm ups that always complimented the movements of the WOD. There were several drills and exercises that I learned from Nicole that I’ll use as long as I’m an athlete. Sara - was as much a member of our box as she was a coach, and when she stepped in front of the class we all listened. Sara always asked before each class if anyone had injuries or aches - not many coaches do this and Sara would suggest alternate movements if you had a tweaked shoulder, or right back, or all of the above. The thing I liked most about Charm City CrossFit is that it felt accessible and welcoming to any level of CF athlete. Not all boxes are like that these days, and whether you’re new to CF or completed Murph 10 times with a weight vest Charm City CrossFit is with checking out.
Thanks Ben!
Fantastic experience: Great people solid community and great location . CCCF has more to offer than just Crossfit. Check them out
Thanks Chris!
Fantastic experience: The best quality equipment, excellent knowledgeable staff, reasonable rates. All of this in the heart of Baltimore, highly recommended
Thanks Jurgen!
Fantastic experience: I started doing CrossFit out of state over the summer, and when I moved back to Baltimore in the fall for school, I began looking for a box to train at in the area. I reached out to a few different boxes, and Nick was the first to reply. From the minute I stepped into Charm City CrossFit, I felt welcome and like I belonged. The environment and sense of community is great. Nick knows his stuff, and has even worked with me 1-1 to improve on areas where I struggle. In the 2 months I’ve been a member here, I’ve learned and grown so much. I also enjoy how the yoga classes are often geared towards the WOD...as someone with mobility issues, this has helped. Highly recommend!
Jenny we're so glad we were able to workout with you while you were in school here in Baltimore. We wish you the best as you move on in life past college. PS Congratulations on Graduation!!!!!
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Nick is so knowledgeable and his classes are fun so it keeps me motivated.
Thanks Simon!
Fantastic experience: Great programming and great coaching. Whether you’re new or experienced, you’ll find nick, the other coaches, and the community here to be welcoming and challenging.
Thanks Joel!
Fantastic experience: Really amazing place and very attentive trainers
Thanks Alaa!
Fantastic experience: I was in Baltimore for the summer and was looking for a Crossfit gym to join. CCC was the closest one to where I was living, so I decided to check it out. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming the moment I walked in! The coaches are very knowledgeable and focus on everyone's form/technique. The space is a bit small, but it has never been an issue for workouts and makes the atmosphere a bit cozier!
Thanks James!
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Thanks Emily!
Fantastic experience: This is a great gym. The coaches are all in and invested in their clients. The atmosphere is great, every time you walk in you feel the positive energy.
Thanks Grant!
Fantastic experience: Challenging WODs with a fun group of people. Nick and the other coaches are great! Highly recommend!!!
Thanks Dani!
Fantastic experience: As an out-of-town Crossfitter looking for somewhere to drop in for a couple weeks, I felt welcomed into Charm City Crossfit by its coaches. In addition to a challenging WOD, the daily programming includes mobility and strength and skill training - not always the norm at other Crossfit boxes. As more athletes seekiing an elite fitness program discover Nick and this facility, he will need to find a larger space!
Thanks Sheryl!
Fantastic experience: Awesome Facility, even better Coach!
Thanks Evan!
Fantastic experience: If you think you're not the "crossfit type", Charm City Crossfit will certainly change your mind! This is not your typical crossfit gym. They truly welcome and accommodate everyone on all fitness levels. The owner, Nick, is always there to provide personalized advice on techniques and nutrition to help you achieve your individual goals. Whether you are just trying to get in shape or meet some new friends (or both!) Charm City Crossfit is well worth trying out!
Thank You Lindsey!
Fantastic experience: The gym is a great atmosphere and the trainers are very knowledge and motivational.
Thanks Justin!
Fantastic experience: Such an amazing atmosphere! I am from out of state and this box made me feel so welcomed! Such a great staff! Thank you!
Thanks Jarelle!
Fantastic experience: I was visiting Baltimore for two months this summer for work and decided to try something new. I had never done crossfit before and was a little nervous before showing up. But I totally didn't need to be! The folks who work out at Charm City CrossFit are super friendly and nice, and Nick is an AWESOME coach. He pushes you while also being attentive to any injuries or other limitations you may have. I have missed this gym so much since leaving town! So if you're nearby and have a chance to check it out, don't miss out!!!
Thanks Caitlin! We miss you at the gym, come back to Baltimore and visit!
Fantastic experience: If you're looking for crossfit this is the best gym in the city. Nick (owner) makes every member not only feel special but motivated to bring their best each and every day. I bar (pun intended) has been set so high with this gym that any other one would be a let down to me.
Thanks Mike!
Fantastic experience: If you want to try Crossfit, this is the place to do it! Not intimidating, friendly atmosphere and Nick is a great trainer! He puts an emphasis on form and safety, unlike a lot of other Crossfit gyms. I was never able to do a pull up in my life til I came here
Thanks Erin!
Fantastic experience: As someone who joined who was new to crossfit, I never felt intimidated here at class. Nick, the trainer, is great. He's very knowledgeable, keeps the classes fun and keeps them safe!
Thank you Stephanie! We're very glad to have you in class keep up the PRs!
Fantastic experience: Great atmosphere and people. The coaches are very knowledgeable and helpful and I love the classes! Nick is a great trainer and is very goal oriented.
Thanks Nicci! We're glad to have you as part of our crew!
Fantastic experience: Charm City CrossFit has been an awesome experience for me as a person who started very out of shape. In mere weeks I have learned new skills and gained confidence in my fitness capabilities. The trainers create an environment that takes the intimidation right out of working out and the variety of exercises will keep you coming back for more!
Thank you Alexsis!
Fantastic experience: Excellent place to lift weights and get fit. The owner and head trainer Nick is very knowledgeable and does what some crossfit coaches don't: understand the limitations of certain folks and works around their lack of experience, weaknesses, and injuries to help them become better. Equipment is new and in good shape and the space is clean and well kept. Prices are very good relative to other crossfit gyms.
Thank You Edrees!
Fantastic experience: Crossfit will make you look better. I’ve already lost weight while eating huge amounts (on paleo). I’m stunned at the strength I’m building, and didn’t realize how good it would feel. Coach Nick gives perfect pace directions and impetus: sharp words of encouragement interspersed with silence while you are focusing. Instructions are calm and crystal clear, with lots of room to scale. I am pushed forward from my growth edge. Overcoming lots of joint stuff, I was on 3200 mg of ibuprofen a day, but last week stopped all because the new muscles are stabilizing everything. I sleep so well, like I’m in Elysium. Thank you team at Charm City Crossfit.
Fantastic experience: Great space and great coaches!
Thanks Alex!
