Located in the heart of Austin, the South Austin Gym is a well-regarded fitness center known for its wide range of combat sports and strength training programs. The gym boasts excellent facilities, including a large boxing area with a full-size ring, various martial arts programs, and a variety of workout equipment. Customers enjoy the clean and spacious environment, which is perfect for serious training without overcrowding.
While membership prices have been noted as relatively high, many users feel that the quality of training received justifies the cost, particularly for dedicated athletes. However, some users expressed concerns regarding the handling of contracts and billing practices, advising others to be cautious about signing up.
Overall, for those serious about improving their skills in martial arts or weightlifting, South Austin Gym provides a supportive community and top-notch training. Just be mindful of the membership terms and associated costs.
South Austin Gym: Opinions

Negative experience: Demasiado caro más que en el centro de Austin y para niños es igual de caro y solo dan 3 días de entrenamiento deberían bajar el precio para los niños es un abuso
Positive experience: Love this gym so much. A true South Austin staple, with legit coaches and a legit boxing program. Membership prices are high, but worth it if you're serious about training, whether that's in mixed martial arts, or strength training. The coaching is first-class, and there's just the right mix of machines + rack space for barbell and free weight work. Membership has gotten a little busier since 2022 when I joined, and that's diluted the appeal of paying a higher price point. If South Austin Gym continues to get busier with general population clients, the value for money won't be there. But if they keep their focus on the bread and butter — boxing / kb / bjj / conditioning for those sports — it'll remain the best gym this side of the river!
Fantastic experience: South Austin Gym is an awesome gym and Randy is a great gym owner. World class coaches. Especially their Muay Thai striking classes! I highly recommend if you are in the Austin area.
Thank you so much Robert!!! Look forward to seeing you in the gym!
Positive experience: W3LL : I'll save the Crypto-Talk for another time; I went for 8 weeks...Highly Recommend one of the Following -->1) Private Sessions 1a) Because you'll only be conditioning if you're not part of a 'Program' (there are 3) 2) Group Classes 2a) This is operated by a great guy - he's patient and you'll get his input or recommendations 3) Light Cross Training 3a) There's room & space to practice agility plus a weight room + cable-exercises. Down (Reason for 4) Sometimes someone cooks something and trying to NOT break your diet becomes a distraction. I also recommened going, if you're 'gym only during non-MMA-type classes ; it's far from 'over-crowded' but if you're there for more than 75min you'll be distracted. Boxing & Kickboxing Coaches are Professionally-Friendly, they have larger lockers, stalls and showers (>1); I recommend taking plenty of water and if you're committed perhaps a diet that allows for continuous training becomes possible. I recommend trying for a 2 months at a time or 2 months on and 3 months off -- if you're uncertain with Strict Training. It's not 'you must work-out...but everyone trains for their Respected Sport. Parking is so/so. Drink Fridge. Scan-Keyring Badge.
Negative experience: Be careful what you sign up for! I payed for a set of personal training and was continuously charged 500$ AFTER sessions were completed. I have had to open multiple claims through my bank and block this gym from pulling more money from my account. The Owner is rude and unprofessional. Have called and came in multiple times for a refund and have been given the runaround every time. I would have liked to buy more classes from this gym if the situation was handled with more professionalism. if you come to this gym PAY IN CASH. they will steal from you. I’m not the first or the last.
Fantastic experience: My son has been taking boxing classes and working out at the gym for a few years now. He loves it and has really enjoyed developing his skills since beginning at age 13. Randy and the gang run a great operation and we are happy to be a part of it.
Fantastic experience: I like ‘em
Fantastic experience: Great space. Gym and MMA, the coaches are the real deal, seasoned fighters and great guys thanks
Fantastic experience: This gym brings a lot to the table: lots of space with lots of room, several different martial arts, (which is hard to find under one roof) and every time I come here people are friendly. I’m just getting back into boxing and I am thoroughly enjoying the investment
Thank you Simon! Glad to have you as a member. Look forward to seeing you in the gym soon!!!
Fantastic experience: I am really glad that I found South Austin Gym. The place is huge, so you never have to wait on dumbbells and rarely have to work in on the machines. They have brand new cardio equipment with TVs, and huge boxing area with a full size boxing ring and wrestling mats, too. New locker room and showers are a plus! All in all, great gym.
Nate, this is awesome. Thanks so much for your great review, and I look forward to seeing you soon! 'Til then, Randy, Owner
Fantastic experience: This is a no frills, affordable, community gym for boxers, wrestlers and lifters. If you are into no nonsense, workouts with iron weights, heavy bags and wrestling matts, and you don't like TVs and flashing lights, this is your place.
Thanks, Ryan! -Randy, Owner
Positive experience: Good price for a simple gym. I don't attend the classes, but glad to pay less that $15 a month for some basic equipment. Though, more than half their treadmills don't work, and the bathrooms could be cleaner. Seems clear that you get what you pay for.
E.S., I'm really glad you're happy with everything overall, and I appreciate your constructive thoughts. I'll be sure to look into those issues. I'm looking forward to seeing you next time, and I hope you'll let me know if there's anything else I can do to make things better for you! Best, Randy, Owner
Positive experience: Visited this gym during the Fantastic Fest and thought it was a major upgrade from their old location. I have not worked out here, but the facility itself is really nice!
Gabe, I'm so glad you were a fan! Thanks for your great review. I'm looking forward to welcoming you back soon! 'Til then, Randy, Owner
Fantastic experience: Really great gym that I've been a member with for over a year. Awesome people too.
This is great. Thanks for being part of what makes our place special. See you soon, Randy, Owner
Fantastic experience: This gym is really more than a gym and I'm not saying this just because I go here. They have clean equipment and great programs. I was initially attracted to this place because they offered Muay Thai, but I've been so out of shape that just having a trainer to spar with was the best. They have motivated me so much that I'm seeing weight loss and more muscle. I just wanted to shout out to them how much they've helped me with my goal!
Thanks so much for your awesome recommendation. I'm really glad you're having a great experience training with us -- see you soon! Cheers, Randy, Owner
Fantastic experience: Randy Palmer is awesome, and really knows his stuff. Do the $59 Kickstart to help ease you into it all. He’ll teach you about the basics of boxing before you go to a class. Also the weight lifting gym there is good!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym, go there because its some of the best boxing instruction around. The owner, Randy, is a gifted teacher, and ex-professional boxer. He's managed to carefully hire a great group of instructors. The actual weight lifting and exercise machines are first-class, without the big crowds.
Thank you for the review, Hugh! I am glad you are enjoying your training here. See you at the gym soon!
Fantastic experience: Love this place! I work out with Randy on a bi-weekly basis he always gives me a great work out, keeps it interesting and keeps me engaged. You can tell he takes pride in his work, and enjoys what he does. His enthusiasm is contagious. I have been going here for months and highly recommend trying this place out! Gym overall is very clean. I have lost over 10lbs since starting at this gym with 1:1 sessions twice weekly.
Thank you for the review Tyler! See you soon at the gym!
Fantastic experience: Staff ,coaches and facility are great.
Thank you Ozzie!
Fantastic experience: Great space, great place! Cool working with Randy! : )
Fantastic experience: LOVE this place! For many reasons. I recently started training with Randy, and he is the REAL deal! Like no kidding! He is an amazing instructor and takes his time with me and meets me where I am at. I had a car accident and a head injury so I have to modify many movements and go slow. Another reason, I love this gym, is that it is CLEAN! I am mean, REALLY clean! The weight racks are always in order! The floors are spotless! For a boxing and weight rack gym, it is truly amazing! Better than any box store gym in the city! The people who work there, say hello to you! I feel like when I am there, I matter! Thank you Randy!
Heather, I'm glad you chose to work with me after your injury, and I'm sure that after our training you'll be back up to your full strength and speed in no time. We work hard to provide a clean and friendly environment for our community, and I'm happy to hear that our staff makes you feel great when you're here. Thank you for the kind words, and I hope to see you again soon for another great session. Until next time, Randy P., Owner
Fantastic experience: Small place but each n every equipment u need they got
Negative experience: Terrible experience... Too many gyms in Austin to waste your time here. Check out Dark Clan, Eastside Boxing or ONNIT.
Hi Aymen, I am sorry that you were not able to use our heavy bags when you came in. We always ask for people to limit their heavy bag use to outside of our scheduled class times, due to limited floor space and out of respect for the coaches and the members taking class. You would've been more than welcome to jump in and join us though!
Negative experience: Good luck canceling your contract even when it says when you move and send in proof of residency they still bill you, won't be paying and dont recommend them besides the cheap gym only membership.
Jason, we're sorry to hear you're not happy with cancelling your contract. If there is ever an issue, our team is always more than happy to help. Please feel free to give us a call. (512) 445-2348 -Randy P., Owner
Negative experience: $35 for kickstarter, 1 hour class? Come one that is just a trick, boxing clases for kids are too high for what it is, I will avoid this place for kids, you can not even find pricing in their website tricky business here
Fernando, we believe our prices accurately reflect the quality of training our students receive. We would hate for one of our customers to feel they're not getting what they paid for, so we're sorry if you felt this way. If there's anything we can do, please feel free to reach out to us. We do hope you'll give us another shot at showing you how great we can be. -Randy P., Owner
Fantastic experience: Quality Gym with new equipment, new bags, new turf, new murals, and a real boxing ring as well. Trainers are either current fighters or ex-fighters with real hands on knowledge. The owner is actually an EX-WORLD Champion kick boxer. Look it up. Randy Palmer. Pretty sure it's the largest INDEPENDENTLY OWNED gym in town where the owner actually has some belts/titles. If you have not checked this place out, you certainly need to. The amateur events are really fun and Im pretty sure there are going to be some pro-fights happening at the gym as well this year!!! It's fun to see some celebrities at his events from time to time as well. And the seminars are super cool too......I personally enjoyed the Nathan Carnage Elbow Striking Seminar this past year. If your interested in Burmese bare knuckle boxing....check out the upcoming seminar on Saturday, Feb 2nd from 12pm-3pm for $75. It'll be well worth it and a lot of fun!!!
Fantastic experience: TL;DR: This gym and the instructors are awesome. Go here. This is a great gym! I've trained in martial arts of different sorts since I was a kid, I love it. It's the only exercise that I can stick with! I needed to tighten up my boxing, (which is sloppy), so I checked out South Austin Gym. After one Kickstarter lesson, I signed up. Unfortunately, a week later in judo class at another gym, my MCL and meniscus were injured when a guy who didnt yet know how to fall correctly landed on my right knee. I had to do rehabilitation and stop training. South Austin Gym was kind enough to freeze my account for a short time! Here it is, several months later, and I am able to attend boxing classes to try and get in shape again (it's going to be a task: I let myself go), and I am hooked! Next week will only be my third week of regular training in a long time and I can't wait to get back at it. When I get my wind back, I'm going to do the kickboxing classes, too. The boxing coaches (I do day classes) Rudy, Mo, Zach and Mike are all professional and supportive. Haven't had the chance to take classes from Coach Palmer yet but he is always at the gym and seems to be a nice guy. All the other students in the classes are also supportive and fun to workout with. If you are looking for a gym to help you get started in combat sports or whip you in shape because you've been sandbagging it (like me), this is the place to go. Do it!
TL;DR: You're awesome, Intrepid! We're excited that you decided to get back into martial arts. However, we're sorry to hear that you had to go through that injury, but it shows true character that you got through it and got right back into training! We think our coaches are pretty great too, and we know they appreciate everything that you had to say. We look forward to seeing your progress! -Randy P., Owner
Positive experience: I called and just wanted to know prices. I liked the guy I talked to, he seemed really nice, but asked several times for monthly membership prices for only western boxing or both w boxing and kickboxing and got the runaround everytime. I probably won't hassle with going to the $35 kickstart trial just to find out what they charge for their programs that he wanted me to do. I'll just find another gym.
Fantastic experience: I love the gym...you have all the equipment you need...plus the boxing and kickboxing classes are fun.
Itza, great equipment paired with fun boxing classes sounds like the best way to get an intense workout! We're glad to hear that you had a great experience, and we hope to welcome you back soon. -Randy P., Owner
Fantastic experience: This gym is excellent. And everything is so clean! The SAS classes are almost as good as one-on-one training, but without the cost, so in that sense it's much less expensive that the average boxing gym. It doesn't have the overcrowding that a lot of Austin gyms have. It has all the equipment needed, plus the wide open space needed (most gyms have only one or the other). The personal training is expensive, but probably only needed for more serious boxers.
Sarah, you're right, our gym really does have it all: wide open spaces, great equipment, and a clean environment. We're glad that our SAS classes are right for you, and we hope you stop by next time you need an intense workout! -Randy P., Owner
Negative experience: Please do not waste your money. I do not even write reviews EVER but I have to because me and my husband both had hard time ending our contract. The first problem is that they do not manage their own payment system. It is done by a third party. They literally refer you to the third party for any issues with your payment. When I signed up for my contract I was told that my contract was for 6 months including the month that I signed up(makes sense) but when they took out money on the 7th month, I called them and the owner's wife was rude and basically told me I need to learn how to read. I had to hang up on her because she was so disrespectful. A month later my husband told them that we were moving to another city and he wanted to end his contract(a clause in contract and verbally told by the person when we signed our contract), they gave him WRONG email address of the third party who takes care of their payments. We emailed then in April with the proof that we have moved to another city. We realized in September that they were still taking out payments($125/ month) from his account. We contacted the payment company and they just emailed us today that they will take out another payment in October and it will stop in November. This is after we forwarded them the proof of email in April to the wrong email address that was provided to us(word "systems"was missing from incorrect email address). There are much better gyms out in that area who do better business. The instructors are good and they are friendly but please do not sign a contract or just sign a month to month contract. I know that it is not that difficult to just call the payment company(third party) and let them know about the wrong email address and they could have easily returned our overpayments. And just to also make clear, my husband has not been to that gym since February 2019. Please do not join this gym
Neetu, it's never our intention to make our clients feel stressed about their contract, and we apologize you felt that way. We rely on using a third party for payments so that we can focus on providing great training for our clients. I'm sorry to hear that you had a frustrating time trying to get everything settled. If you're ever back in town, we hope you'll give us another chance. Randy P., Owner
Negative experience: YOU CAN NOT CANCEL YOUR MEMBERSHIP. I REPEAT. YOU CAN NOT CANCEL YOUR MEMBERSHIP. Unless you are going to take your training seriously, I would not recommend coming to this gym. I initially signed up to train with them so I could start competing. Then suddenly I had a change with my work schedule, which prevented me from being able to make it to any class. Cool, I called the agency that they doing billing to cancel. Apparently there’s a clause in their contract that prevents you from canceling your contract. You can’t even buy out the rest of your contract like most gyms offer. So basically I’ve been stuck paying over 140-150 something dollars a month for training that I can’t even attend. So don’t end up like me.
We are sorry to hear that you haven't been able to attend our classes. We offer several no commitment options such as trials, day passes and month to month memberships. We also offer term memberships that offer a discount for the length of training time agreed to. If you sign up on one of our term memberships, the stated cancellation terms are either a move or a injury. We were unaware of your situation before reading this online. We could have offered several options for you if you had contacted management at the gym regarding your inability to make it to class times. Please give us a call at 512-445-2348.
Negative experience: Terrrible gym, bad business practices , the things they promised are not true ,broken equipment and unprofessional trainers not for people with experience , horrible process to cancel the membership. I had signed up for 6 months that I payed for to later find out it was a year and a half , false information, I don't recommend this to anyone who's more advance in boxing or mma , would rather recommend planet fitness then this for what you pay for monthly .In short words they only care to squeez money out of you and work against you they could literally care less about ur health or fitness , when I did set up to have training sessions the coaches didn't show up ,Conrad,May,Kayde and I also heard weird things between the coaches and staff going on , didn't feel comfortable didn't want to go to the gym and the training was very basic nothing you couldn't do by your self at any other and less priced gym, horrible experience wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Besides me not wanting to attend the gym and then wanting to cancel which is one of the worst experiences I've had at any gym I've ever been too with 5 years boxing experience.
Fantastic experience: Great place to train! All the coaches are knowledgeable and train at your pace... they don't throw you in the ring to spar with pro's on your first day! I highly recommend coming in for a kickstarter class.
Fantastic experience: Gym has all typical weight and cardio machines but also has a nice selection of free weights, Primal 7 bands, 'crossfit' equipment, along with its own area for use. I can put my headphones in, knock-out a good workout and rarely have to wait on equipment / machines. Highly recommend for someone who wants to focus on their workout.
Fantastic experience: Nice chill environment
Fantastic experience: Small place but has everything you need for a good workout
Fantastic experience: Nicely equipped gym
Fantastic experience: Nice chill environment
Positive experience: Wish hours were different
Fantastic experience: This place is amazing! Everyone has been very welcoming and friendly, and I can't speak highly enough about the entire staff. I've been going to the kickboxing classes for just under a month, the workout is intense but scaleable to all levels (including my own sad state of fitness lol!) and Mo and Cade have been exceptionally helpful and patient. Sorry if I misspelled the names! Looking forward to getting into some of the fitness classes as well, but that'll have to wait a bit while my body acclimates to more rigorous exercise! Again, I can't recommend this place enough! Reasonable prices, and great people!
Fantastic experience: Great all around gym with many aspects of all combat sports and very family friendly . Highly recommended for amateur and pros. Great price for skill level of expertise. Knowledge is power, with a fun atmosphere.
Fantastic experience: In October of 2016, I was bored of my workout routine and decided to try something new. Without prior experience, I challenged myself to win a sanctioned fight within one year. With the expertise and patience of the trainers and staff at South Austin Gym, my goal was accomplished a few months ahead of schedule. Given that I have ran through the gamut of their programs, from SAS Fit to boxing class and even some personal training sessions, I can say that as long as you bring some grit, South Austin Gym will push you to achieve your fitness goals.
Fantastic experience: I took boxing and kickboxing classes at this gym for about a year and half and have worked with many of the instructors: Randy (gym owner), Mo, Tyler, Vaughn, Kaiden (i think?), and a few other guys that are no longer teaching there or whose names I didn't get. There was one trainer I didn't like too much (Lorenzo, no longer at the gym) but otherwise, they all have had a great attitude and are knowledgeable and experienced, and classes had a good balance between theory (bag work, drills) and practice (dutch drills, light sparring). The reality is that most people need to be hit a couple of times to be "taught" the importance of keeping your guard up, footwork, etc, and so you need the occasional sparring to develop good habits. I was concerned with head injuries and excessively violent students/instructors but I have found that, at least for the boxing and kickboxing classes, there is a healthy emphasis on control and proper technique. I really appreciated that side of the class and it was what kept me coming back. Even when Tyler was kicking my legs into jello, or Mo was slipping upper cuts through my defense, I found it instructive and helpful rather than discouraging because they had excellent control and were showing me weaknesses. If you are interested in boxing only as exercise, this is not the place to go. If you are interested in learning and practicing boxing or kickboxing technique as a fighter, you will find good and varied company here. If I wasn't leaving the city to go back to school, I'd renew my membership ($1k per year) and keep training.
We appreciate the review, Daniel! Though we're sad to see you go, we know you'll do great at school. Hope to see you on your breaks. -Randy, Owner
Fantastic experience: I'm fairly new to this gym, maybe 3 months or so. I've had nothing but good experiences here. The staff are all knowledgeable and very serious about conditioning, fitness, and mindset. I go to the classes at least twice a week and have learned alot. Excellent instructors like Andy, Mo, Josh, Cade, and Randy make this place a wealth of knowledge for any looking to get ready for the fight. I really enjoy the primal 7 class, they are really tough. I can't believe that Mo teaches/participates in the primal class and then immediately goes to teach the boxing class, that dude is a beast...I'm on the floor just drained after the primal class...lol only bad thing is I wish there was an earlier class like 9am or whatever. The earliest classes start at noon.
Fantastic experience: Really great gym. There is a weight section and they have cardio machines like a traditional gym which is really nice. The boxing trainers are really fantastic. You can really tell they have put a lot of thought and work into their boxing program and they are awesome with assessing where you are at and helping you get to where you want to go. All the staff I have dealt with there has been great from day 1. Can't say enough good things about this gym!
Paige, thanks for the amazing shoutout! Your hard work is paying off and it'll continue to if you keep it up. Hope you had a great 3-day weekend. See you around. -Randy, Owner
Fantastic experience: A great gym with great membership pricing! Has everything you need to stay in phenomenal shape!
Bill, we appreciate the shoutout. It's great to know you're such a fan of the selection of equipment and the pricing. Keep up the hard work. -Randy, Owner
Fantastic experience: I just use the gym area. Nice small little gym but with good equipment, nice staff and not too busy. I really enjoy it. Peacefull workout
Lizzy, we're glad we could give you a place to workout without all the distractions. Keep up the hard work! -Randy, Owner
Fantastic experience: I spent a year in the weight area working out and watching the boxing and kick-boxing. Finally decided to give boxing a try. Best decision I've made in many years. Great staff, coaches and support. You will find some of the best people in South Austin Gym. Best deal in town for the weight room, and none of the other gym's issues with grunting or not grunting. The cost of the boxing program is about the same as other boxing gyms. If you want to be pampered, go else where, if you want instruction and support to reach your goals, South Austin Gym is the place to be. Thanks to all the staff for the support and results.
Thank you for giving us a shot, Tim! I'm glad to hear that watching the boxing and kickboxing for a year inspired you to check it out yourself. We do our very best to offer the best training around and to help everyone who comes in to meet their goals, so I'm happy that you're so dedicated to getting it done. Keep up the hard work! -Randy, Owner
Positive experience: I've been going to this gym for nearly three years now and have enjoyed it thoroughly especially when it moved closer to my home in South Austin rather than being closer to downtown. The staff are friendly they're always getting in new equipment and improving the gym space. The only thing personally keeping it from being a 5-star is them being open at 5:30 in the morning, I know this is early for some people but it's never open when it says it's supposed to be open and most the time I'm having to drive back home because I don't have time to waste when no one is here.

Thanks for being such an awesome member for the past few years. I'm glad our move south helped shorten your commute, and it's awesome to hear you're enjoying the new equipment. I am sorry, though, if you've had to drive without getting your workout in some mornings. Your feedback is important to us, and we'll be working on making sure that's no longer a concern. -Randy, Owner
Negative experience: Seems half decent. Went for boxing and was asked to pay $35 up front. No free trial to see if I even like it. Completely ridiculous. The gym membership itself cost more than several gyms and several martial arts programs that let you have a free trial.
An, we're sorry that you weren't pleased with the way we price our classes, but we do it to ensure that we're getting only the most serious martial artists, and so that we can take care of our team. Hope that makes sense. Maybe we'll see you again. -Randy, Owner
Negative experience: Came in to try the gym out tonight because I heard good things. My workout was only going to take 20 minutes as I told the guy at the desk. He charged me $15, okay cool, he tells me that's a 1 day pass. When I leave (20 minutes later) I ask the same person if I can come back tomorrow before 6pm? 1 day = 24 hours right? The same guy makes this weird thinking emoji face and says "I don't know I'll have to ask Mo". I wanted to give a local gym a chance but I think I'll stick to 24 Hour Fitness. At least there I would have got shown around and the day pass would have been for a day. I was even going to buy a t-shirt if I liked the place. Oh well keeping Austin weirded is getting harder to do I guess.
Jonathan, we're sorry that you don't agree with our policy, but whether you work out for 20 minutes or 12 hours, it's $15 from 5:30 AM - 10:00 PM, M-F. We also have membership plans that would make that price even less. Maybe we'll see you around, man. -Randy, Owner
Negative experience: This place is known for charging past dates for contracts. The staff says they can't do anything to stop the payments and to contact their billing company. The billing company is super shady and wants official documents by mail to stop payments. Not worth the effort when there are dozens of gyms around.
