Auburn-Lewiston YMCA: Opinions
Negative experience: We started a membership for our entire family and never had an issue…. One month later we were violently removed because my youngest daughter wasn’t covered under the insurance. Had that been disclosed originally we would’ve never started the more then 100$ membership. Instead of letting us know they decided to wait after taking our money (no refunds policy) to tell us we weren’t allowed there… after the realization they had I asked if we could be refunded due to their mistake and was told “no way”… be honest with people that’s all we want
Positive experience: As a visitor from another town and a YMCA Plus member, I had the chance to visit the Auburn Lewiston Y. The staff was welcoming, and the community spirit was great. However, the building, which dates back to 1947, is really showing its age and could use a major renovation. I sincerely hope that in the near future, the YMCA can find a strong partner or sponsor who recognizes the value of this community resource and helps make the renovation a priority. A refreshed location would not only preserve the legacy of the YMCA but also ensure that it continues to serve the Auburn Lewiston area for generations to come. Ps I also noticed that the showers don’t have dividers, which didn’t feel right to me. While it might be okay for some people, I believe having more privacy would make the experience more comfortable for everyone.
Positive experience: Have had a membership for nearly three years, but ever since they renovated the basement to move classes down there, and rearranged the upstairs so equipment is in the old class area where you stare at yourself in floor to ceiling mirrors while working out and have zero privacy (or mirrors) where you're now expected to stretch, I haven't gone back. I don't love the new layout one bit
Negative experience: I'm very disappointed that adults have to have a membership to supervise their kids. I would be willing to pay for a membership for my 14 and 11 year old, because they would use it. I would not, but my 11 year old needs to be supervised, and I am not allowed to supervise without a membership. I briefly considered becoming a member, but the woman at the front desk did not seem to want to answer my questions and she looked at me like I had two heads when I mentioned the discount that the YMCA is supposed to offer my employer, so rather than recruiting a new member, she inspired me to leave.
Negative experience: This is without a doubt the worst, grossest gym I've ever attended. I will preface this by saying I only attend the Auburn gym, and it's exclusively for the weightlifting room, but still. It almost entirely has to do with one thing: CLEANLINESS. This place is genuinely disgusting. I'm repulsed even being here. Without hyperbole, every time I leave, I feel like I'm developing a cold - I can feel my throat start to swell. The building is absolutely ancient and doesn't seem well-maintained, so I often wonder if there's lead, asbestos, mold, or something else in the air. They have fans blowing in the weightlifting room, but it seems like it's just moving air around and there's no actual ventilation. You can tell there's no ventilation, so the air is always stuffy and odorous. It's disgusting. The lockers in the men's locker room don't ever seem to get cleaned, if they're cleaned at all. They're all beat up, haggard, falling apart, and even rusted. I'd see the same candy wrappers in the same locker for weeks or longer. At least at Planet Fitness in Auburn, I regularly saw the lockers get cleaned. The men's locker room is in the basement, and it's so dingy and gross. The steam room in the men's room is truly a spectacle. If the steam hasn't been running recently, it takes FOREVER to fire up. When you're done your workout, you may have to kill time as you wait for the machine to fire up. The tiles in the steam room are all in disrepair; they've actually had a couple planks of wood propped on one bench with a caution sign on them to prevent people from sitting there - for months now. And if the steam hasn't been running in a while, it smells AWFUL. Seriously, the odor in there is intolerably repugnant. Like, immediately & instinctively do a 180 to escape the odor-type of repugnant. As for the weightlifting room: again, the unventilated air is nasty, and the fans just blow around people's spittle and breath. The machines are frequently down. The machines and all the free weights and other equipment all look like they haven't been replaced since the 80s or 90s. (I actually met someone at the Lewiston Y who said he feels he has to wash his hands every time he uses the equipment at the Auburn Y, and I completely feel the same way.) I thought that by paying 4x more than what I was paying at Planet Fitness would earn me a significantly upgraded gym. While it was ultimately my choice to make the move after touring the place, I figured I'd give it a chance, chiefly for the steam room and closer proximity to my apartment. It was not the right move. Planet Fitness is significantly cleaner and bigger and more open. It's also FRIENDLIER. The standards at this gym are sorely lacking and it's a disgrace.
Negative experience: Terrible customer service, very mouthy, incredibly hostile when I first walked in, didn’t look me in the eye and did not greet me at all. You cannot get a day pass for basketball but you can for the gym, for an astonishing price of $7 and a membership of $30+.
Negative experience: Can't use facilities without a membership. Customer service is awful. Apparently insurance prevents them from offering services that most YMCAs offer
Negative experience: An Inconsistent, pompous, mediocre facility. Nothing special to say the least. Unsatisfactory
Negative experience: All I'm reading on their site is that they have no respect for privacy
Negative experience: Have had a good workout every time I’ve been until today when the lady at the front desk accused me and my friend of not re racking weights when we always do. She was extremely disrespectful and unprofessional, even after we showed her what we used and that it was put away. She never apologized for falsely accusing us and ended the conversation with a mouthy comment and walked away.
Fantastic experience: Great pricing options for people on a budget, fill out an application!
Fantastic experience: I love going here. It is clean and enjoyable. After working out I take a swim in the pool and then relax in the hot tub for awhile. Staff is always helpful and friendly.
Fantastic experience: Good hard work at the gym we clean the machine and did out side work to
Fantastic experience: Love it here. Also love the fact that I have so many choices when I go. Overall a good family gym
Fantastic experience: Overall very clean and the staff does a great job.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facility and staff.
Positive experience: The staff is really nice along with the equipment. With the amount of inappropriately dressed women at the gym, I would NOT rate it Christian which is what my husband and I were looking for in a gym. I do not want to be looking at someone's butt hanging out under their shorts or how tight the yoga pants can get, I want to focus on working out.
Positive experience: Love the classes and the insructors are in pretty good shape....that tells you there dedicated.....the place is old but great memories where made here ...i learned from a family member the other day that teen dances where held there in the 60's ...imagine that!
Fantastic experience: Love It!
Negative experience: Nothing Christian or non profit anymore
Fantastic experience: Great staff, wonderful selection of exercise classes. I have been to most gyms in this area and the YMCA offers more at a reasonable price.
Fantastic experience: You can pay to work out for a day, or have a membership if you'll be a regular. Several options of both cardio and strength equipment. They have group excercise things that can be helpful to get in shape. They also have fair prices on drinks. Always lock up your locker to prevent anything being taken.
Fantastic experience: Staff is excellent facilities are awesome...
Negative experience: Lot of competition, 1 of only most of the machines. They have an AC but never turn it on, so just fans. The locker room is really old, and down below it smells.
