Attleboro Norton YMCA Downtown Branch: Opinions

Positive experience: There are not enough parking spots and no dedicated spots for childcare pick up/drop off. I often have to circle the parking lot for 10+ minutes in the morning just to find a spot to run in for 2 minutes and drop my child off.

Negative experience: There's bedbugsss in the women's locker room! In the lockers and on the carpet!!!!

Fantastic experience: I love that this is close by and has everything to keep active.

Negative experience: Terrible membership policies told me I had to go in to cancel in person that was a lie. Find any other place to go but here.

Negative experience: First I will say that I love my Y. The instructors are amazing, the community feel is awesome and the staff are wonderful. I’ve since moved to North Attleboro but still maintain a family membership here. Everyone that comes here is polite and friendly. I love that there’s a diverse community of people of different ages, races and background. The only thing I absolutely hate is the locker rooms. They need to be updated, cleaned or completely overhauled. I swim on the weekends and I like to shower afterwards. There’s a good number of shower booths in the women’s and family locker rooms but the shower curtains in the women’s locker rooms are all disgusting and growing black mould. It appears they’ve never been cleaned since they were installed. The lockers in the women and family locker rooms are rusted and need to be cleaned out. These are the issues I have with the place. Everything is good otherwise.

Negative experience: So my husband and I joined specifically for the pool. When we signed up, we were given a pool schedule which was decently accommodating for a working schedule. A week later, I was sent an updated pool schedule. Following this new schedule, I arrived to the facility 3 times in one week and was unable to swim. When I talked to the front desk, they informed me that I’d need to check the website EVERYDAY to see an updated schedule despite them JUST sending out a new one. The pool now is essentially unable to be used if you actually have a day job. The afternoons are COMPLETELY booked. I have a bum knee and I’m in the process of awaiting my 5th surgery for it, so the only form of exercise I’m able to tolerate is swimming. I have zero clue as to why a facility would offer swimming to their members if they only allow for such limited availability. I’m a travel therapist and move every 3-6 months, and Y’s are our gym of choice. This is by far the WORST one I’ve ever been to. Bathroom/Locker rooms are always disgusting, and now they’re willing to book their afternoons up for the pool despite offering it to their members.

Negative experience: Ok gym. Unfortunately the lack of members, staff that don't wipe down equipment is pretty nasty. It should definitely be enforced...at least somewhat.

Negative experience: Nice small place love that they have two pools but unfortunately unless you want to only go in the morning or afternoon when schools in session, you’re going to be bombarded by rude dirty boys who use a machine with trash and one walked away from the bench for a few minutes with weights on it and so I went over and started to take them off for him to walk back over and said oh I’m still using the bench . Really… so glad my primary gym is in Taunton. Teens at that location are respectfully and don’t leave trash on a machine.

Negative experience: If i could give less than 1 star I would have to say the Men's 3v3 basketball league is atrociously unorganized and unprofessional. It is everything you would expect opposite from the YMCA's reputation nationally and globally. I would have to say that if you are considering doing any type of organized work-out, 3v3 mens basketball, any program run there that has to do with exercise you should stay away from.

Negative experience: I was kicked out my first time there for reasons unrelated to me, I will not be going again and do not recommend it, there are better YMCA’s, the people there were rude verbally while I was being kicked out on accounts of theft based on no evidence other than the fact I was black, would rate a 0 if i could.

Attleboro Norton YMCA Downtown Branch

At the Attleboro Norton YMCA, we believe diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging are at the heart of our mission to strengthen our community. We take any report of theft seriously and any related disciplinary measures are meted fairly and equitably. Members who have specific questions about any disciplinary actions or steps taken pertaining to their membership should contact our downtown branch executive director, Andrea Champagne, by calling (508) 409-0766 or by emailing [email protected].

Fantastic experience: This YMCA blows the Newman YMCA out of the water. The Newman YMCA recently decided to place their gym within 2 small classrooms eliminating half their equipment. This YMCA has 2 full floors of workout equipment, 2 pools, and amazing hours. I will be coming here for all my workout needs from now on. This is how I remember the YMCA being as a teen.

Fantastic experience: *Update* 1/6/20 I have gone to Sound Yoga with Brian, and I just want to say...what an amazing class that is! He is such a different vibe than your average yoga class. He's a VERY talented musician as well as instructor. I highly recommend it! However.... I feel like you guys need to let more people know you offer it. Maybe some facebook posts? It's such a gem of a class and for some reason when people from my ymca try to go to Attleboro schedule from their Home (Taunton) app, for some strange reason Attleboro doesn't come up! Stoughton, Brockton...all those come up but NOT Attleboro. There is a problem with the app and I keep referring people to that class and inevitably unless I write it down for them, or send them directly to your website, no one can find it. Just an fyi update thank you! I am a member of the Taunton YMCA, I came here to the Attleboro one to catch a Yoga class. Glad I did! Their mind/body studio is brand new and super nice! The instructor was awesome and the locker rooms are the nicest ones I've ever seen honestly. Very updated. Sauna/steam room is brand new and clean. They even have free lockers here. You make your own pin code and it stays for the day/night. Very convenient. This place is huge and kind of confusing to navigate but everyone that works here is so nice. I like this YMCA better than my own lol its way more upgraded. The parking is kind of tricky bc it seems during the day you have to pay, but I come at nite anyways so I don't have to. Looking forward to Sound Therapy Yoga they have on Thu nites and Sunday mornings. I hear great things about that class and it seems this location is the only one that does sound so that's nice too.

Fantastic experience: The Attleboro YMCA is the ultimate place to spend time with my family. My daughter is 10 and loves going swimming with her friends, and my son is now old enough to do his own workouts. After school this place comes alive with teens, after school programs, group exercise classes, swim lessons, and more. This place has changed my life. I have a community of people who are supportive and encouraging. This is the place I found friends who became a second family to me and my kids. I love that the programs are all inclusive, if you are a low income family they have programs to help with low income families, there are programs to help with mental, and physical disabilities, there are programs to help with chronic diseases, cancer patients, pre- diabetes programs, leadership programs to guide misguided teens to a better path and many many more programs, not to mention all the great events they hold, healthy kids day, spin-a-thon, rooftop party, fall festival, just to name a few. The. Attleboro YMCA has so much to offer, it’s not just a gym, it’s a cause, for my family, your family, and our whole community.

Negative experience: Do not use the pool at this Y Branch. Unsanitary! People are allowed to wear street clothes and not shower. Clear stated signs are posted which are also state regulations for the safety of ALL members. Lifeguards do not enforce the clearly written rules. Poor management all around. Keep your family safe and pick a pool that follows regulations. Pretty sad that your response to this post was faster than the 2 voicemails and email to Robin McDonald. Also, Very sad that your aquatics director clearly does not know what is happening in her pool 5 people were in fact swimming in street clothes and were not showered. Pathetic you throw in Religious beliefs, not at all street clothes. keep your family safe. do not use this pool.

Attleboro Norton YMCA Downtown Branch

Hi Brenda - Thanks for your feedback. As our Aquatics Director has explained, we do not allow street clothes to be worn in the pool. However, in keeping with our commitment to be welcoming to all, we do allow members to wear full-coverage swimwear in keeping with their religious and cultural practices.

Fantastic experience: Granted i have only been a member for a short time but i find myself sitting in an area across from the front desk nearly each day for 15 - 45 min to address text messages, emails, and voicemails that i rec'd while using the facility and i have witnessed not so much as a scintilla of rudeness, condescension, or, DEAR GOD, racism. I have, however, witnessed the staff being most helpful, genuinely kind, patient, and very reasonable to all members and members to be - even in the face of unreasonable, relentless, and, thankfully infrequent, pettiness. All front desk staff are warm and welcoming and responsive to the members. Of particular note are Penny and David, whom, from my observations, offer kindness and consideration to all despite the dispositions of those members they attend to - they are be commended. They are not alone; in time, i am certain that i will see others shine. The facility is clean, the pool well-maintained, and the lifeguards are at once personable, detail oriented, and attentive. I read a review wherein a person complained of no area for younger members to address their homework. Each day i use the.pool (at different times), and i notice en route to the elevator that the cafe is often a veritable ghost town and thereby seems to be a great spot for such endeavors. Though i am not at the facility all day every day and cannot attest that there have been no instances of racism, i have, thankfully, not seen an example of bias or prejudice and i can assure reviewers that i would confront such despicable behavior. Tossing out the term "racism" so quickly and capriciously when matters are not resolved to that particular frustrated reviewer's satisfaction is irresponsible and unreasonable. I pray racism does not rear its ugly head here, or anywhere for that matter. In earnest, i hope that people just relax, take a deep breath, and deal with each other with a genuine spirit of fairness. Racism cannot take root where the hearts and minds of those gathered at a given location are genuinely committed to kindness, mutual respect, and fair play. I hope the wonderful diversity i have happened upon in this facility is never tainted by such a sad social cancer as racism. Clearly, i have not been here long so i cannot say there positively have not been incidents of racism, i can only speak about my own observations -- including those where i have seen people angered by situations not being resolved in the manner they expect lash out at staff members whom are merely following policy/protocol. I have observed the term "racism" capriciously misapplied upon numerous occasions. It seems it occurs when a frustrated party wants to effect a blow to end all blows. The use of the word is a deliberate attempt to put the other party at a supreme disadvantage - a very difficult accusation to defend against even if there is honestly - and, Praise be to God, Thankfully - not so much as a scintilla of racism in the staff member's heart or mind. I hope the wondrous diversity i have experienced at this downtown location continues ad infinitum. It is often the best part of my day. We are at our very best when we ice our tempers, suspend judgment, show each other patience and kindness, and just .. simply ... share experiences at a great facility with an attentive, personable staff.

Negative experience: One of the worst YMCA. The staff are very unconvient. I called to speak to someone in billing about an issue I had. I didn’t receive a call back, I also emailed no reply. I get charge unknowingly on my account and still no one would return my call or email. All they care about is money and not helping the kids. I regret every wasting my penny on them

Fantastic experience: Was a member of this Y as a child taking swim lessons, then learned my way around the weight room with their program for teens. Many years later I moved back to the area and rejoined to stay in shape and utilize their programs for toddlers. My kids have always enjoyed the programs, from toddler age to preschool to preteen/teen strength training - and of course, summer camp. I’ve always enjoyed group fitness classes and eventually became an instructor and personal trainer there. It is a great organization to be a part of, and you can tell that the staff and members care.

Fantastic experience: The moment you walk thru the door you can feel the staff is so caring and helpful. There is something for everyone. Group exercise classes are fun and a very positive learning experience.. All seniors should try these classes as they will surely benefit.

Negative experience: The manager and the stuff are very rude and racist. I clearly don't want to go back! I have been disrespectfully treated by the manager after I set forth and exposed a bias I had experienced from them and ask for explanation. she gave me a dirty look and kept smiling strangely. Her condescension was clear. Responding after I request to meet with her supervisor, " there is no one you could speak to, I'm the manager her!". No facility would allows or condones this kind of behavior. it is almost impossible to believe!
