Negative experience: No attention to detail by the new owners and the maintenance/upgrade fee that they are now charging twice a year is too comical. The Oakley location stinks as well (literally). It seems as though they made some cutbacks in the maintenance department. At the South location, they used to employ two shifts of cleaners, am and pm. Now, they must only do the morning because come night time, the men's bathroom is absolutely disgusting.

Negative experience: Truly a God awful experience. You will be charged $70 for the pool and 24 hour service that they actually cannot yet offer! How amazing?! I don't know about you but I LOVE to pay for services I won't actually receive. Then, when you call in asking for help the staff is rude and unhelpful - doubly awesome. I wish I had read the other reviews before signing up. Could not recommend this place LESS - stay away there are so many other amazing gyms in the area that actually have great staff, amenities, prices, and customer service. Save yourself the headache and money down the drain!

Hi Makinna, I am sorry you had a bad experience. Please understand that the improvement fee ($69.99) is not just centered around the pool. I know you have been anticipating the pool to open, like all of us. We have invested over $50,000 in the past year to get it reopened since Covid. We are doing our best to get it opened and functioning to where it is safe and reliable. We will talk to our staff to understand what you have experienced in regard to customer service.

Negative experience: I’ve seen Golds Gym on the decline this year. - The sauna is currently out of order and has been at least 2 other times this year for extended periods of time. - I counted 14 flys in the men’s shower today. I’ll attach a video. - The pool was supposed to open back up at the beginning of the year, then beginning of summer, then end of summer, now looking like “early January “. - There’s no music in the Gym. - Both Hair Dryers in the men’s locker room are broken and have been since the beginning of the year. We have also been charged with extra fees and nothing noticeable has been done. Open the pool, clean the showers and locker rooms, and make the place more enjoyable.

Positive experience: I honestly don't understand the negative reviews about this gym, it has everything I need & is never crowded. Compared to my gym in FL, this gym is not crowded at all, even at 5pm. Staff is friendly, people are friendly & the female reviewer complaining about being uncomfortable is just crazy to me. She needs to find a woman only gym because as a female, I've never had any issues here. I almost didn't join because of the negative reviews but I'm glad I ignored them & did anyway.

Negative experience: I've really appreciated the day staff and management at this gym they're part of the reason I've stayed so long. plus it’s the only Golds that has a sauna in the area so I’d hate leave. Recently this Jason guy working evenings who's completely out of line. has got the audacity to gawk at my girlfriend and tries to flirt with her every time we're there. It's uncomfortable and totally unprofessional

Negative experience: This place was once premier, pool, jacuzzi, daycare, drinks made by staff, would see housekeeping every day. Since Covid February 2020 pool daycare, drinks housekeeping, gone. New owners 2023 increased cost five dollars a month added a 75 dollar maintenance fee and promises of pool the place is filthy with dust hanging from walls and ceiling. Paper towels constantly empty. Air conditioning has been out Or probably clogged vents. They answer all questions with, “They’re working on it” whether the question is the pool the air conditioning the refilling of paper towel. I hope you feel good about yourselves lying to members when you know they are not working on anything. The equipment is not maintained with lose parts making them unsafe. Guess it incurred a cost. The trainers and class instructors are wonderful but this dumpster fire is a dirty, hot, unhealthy mess. The owners are out of town and have managed to minimize spending every way they can. They claim to be working on the pool but it’s bordered up and looks exactly like it did 4 years ago despite reports of “waiting on a part.” You know managers, I posted this months ago, I know you see the pictures and you still don’t address the filth. How much effort does it take to clean a wall hanging with dust?

Negative experience: This Gold’s Gym took new ownership last fall. They promised to be going to 24 hours and they promised to be reopening the pool. Initially these promises were going to happen at the beginning of 2024–right after New Years. Everytime they announced a date and that date arrived they would push the date back. It is almost a year now and they have not made good on either of their promises.

Positive experience: The gym is super crowded.. if the gym was 24 hours that would encourage me to stay. I’ve heard it’s supposed to be 24 hours but it hasn’t happened for like years now? How long can you lead people on… also where’s the pool for these expensive towels lol

Hey Nina,Just wanted to let you know that the club will be going 24 hours starting in September. We've completed the first phase of installing high-end cameras for member safety after hours. The final phase is installing the door scanner. Because we purchased the gym a year ago, we can't account for any previous promises. The pool had an inspection this week so we have some items to address before opening. We are working to get these addressed so we can reopen the pool after it was closed due to Covid.

Positive experience: The equipment is amazing- they have everything you could ever want, and the staff is really friendly! However, there are often very few women here. It's always almost all men. Most everyone is friendly but there are some creepy guys and more men coming up to talk (usually politely but still in the middle of sets, multiple times a workout etc, which for me isn't ideal because I usually just want to get a workout in and go) than at any other gym I've ever been at. I find myself looking around making sure no one is being weird and feeling uncomfortable more often here than other gyms. Overall a really good gym, but if you are a woman/young woman and are looking for a gym that just feels safe and comfortable this might be more of a challenge.

Negative experience: We loved Golds Gym Oakley…until it was sold. The new owners don’t care about customer experience or their own employees. First, I asked them to unfreeze my membership after being away, so they charged my account from that date of the request. Despite multiple visits, emails, and calls, they didn’t activate my membership for SIX weeks. Because of this I couldn’t access the app which is the only way to see schedules and book classes. They continued to bill be and even charge their new semi annual maintenance fee, while not giving services, and despite my complaints. I asked for a credit for at least one month and they refuse. Worse, they hide behind others. The local management has zero empowerment and insist you have to use the app to talk to the owners, then the app response points back to local management. When pushed further the app response basically said we are a third party servicer and can’t help. The owners include no ability to contact them on their site. They have a “policy” of only allowing a two month freeze, yet it appears to be applied inconsistently, I assume based on how much $ you spend on training. So the disparate treatment is frustrating. Despite paying $ for training sessions, if you don’t use them within a certain time period, they expire. I had to battle to keep sessions despite the only reason I couldn’t make them is the trainer got sick. Don’t get me wrong, people get sick and I understand that, but that should be taken into account. By the way, I loved my trainer, she’s awesome, so I’m sad I have to walk away as a matter of principle. They don’t realize, people have options. Now I use the Raquet club (and they actually have a pool - something new owners promised when they started adding fees, but didn’t deliver). The training is substantially cheaper and the management better.

Negative experience: Great gym and had about every machine but the only issue I had was with a front desk employee named Jason that had an attitude and refused to look up my name as I currently didn’t have the app installed. I tried to get help with the username and password for the app but he just ignored me. But other than that everything here is amazing

Negative experience: Tip: maybe instead of discarding great staff that have formed great relationships and create a welcoming and friendly environment consider updating the old rarely working sauna and showers and reopening the pool and hot tub that all your member currently are all paying for. There are other great fitness centers in Asheville to choose from.

Reopening the pool has been a priority. It has been closed since 2020, which has led to a lot of challenges. We had our first inspection this week and we are working on more items to meet requirements and ensure the satisfaction of our members.

AC still nothing working in the morning and I tell you it is bad... Smells really good and it's so sticky while you work out ... You can almost taste other people's sweet...

Negative experience: Neglected. One of the only two hand dryers for women at the facility hasn’t worked for months and there are no paper towels as a backup option. And the women’s shower stalls have worms wiggling around on the floors between the tiles. Apparently this is an ongoing problem according to the front desk personnel.

Negative experience: Wifi has been out for over a month. When asked, the front desk says the same thing..."they're working on it". How long does it take to fix wifi? A shower handle? A soap dispenser? Lame.

Negative experience: Golds Gym ceased operation of their Hendersonville Rd club. According to their contract, see section 3, an alternative facility must be made available within 5 miles. The alternatives now exceeds 11 miles of bumper to bumper traffic on Hendersonville Rd to Oakley. An hour drive one way. Golds Gym refuses to honor the terms of their contract and refuses to cancel memberships. Apparently time to file a complaint in small claims court. And time to contact our local news station.

Negative experience: This garbage business just went from corporate ownership to franchise, and its become horrible ever since. They got rid of 1/4 of the cardio equipment for no reason, membership fees went up, wifi went away (its been 3 months now!), and none of the supposed increased hours or "improvements" have happened. Then they just started charging arbitrarily a fee for renovating the gym. ISN'T THAT SUPPOSED TO BE PAID FOR BY MEMBERSHIP FEES? You have customers paying $650 per year and you have the AUDACITY to just start charging a fee out of nowhere for another $75 per year? In what world does $750 per year make sense for a gym membership? AND THE POOL ISN'T EVEN OPEN. It used to be less than $300 per year in 2019 before COVID, and back then you had a pool! Well, good luck "rennovating". You just lost another long term member, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Negative experience: The new management is severely mismanaging the gym. It was quite bold of them to close the Hendersonville Road location and implement a semi-annual fee of $35, which has not led to any enhancements in the gym's equipment. Consequently, the cost of membership has increased, the gym is now overcrowded with three times the regular number of members, and none of the improvements that were pledged have been realized.

Negative experience: A classic place with the right equipment and new management in place to lower the experience enough by not keeping up with the cleaning, adding additional fees, making contractual guidelines stickier to deal with, and overcrowding the machines all lead to an easy exit. The vibe combined with business practices is now running off several members. The only bonus about Gold’s is that their old Hendersonville Road location gave Trader Joe’s another option of building south of town.

Negative experience: This location is super crowded now! Closing the other location was a mistake. Pool never reopened despite us being charged an extra $70 for "improvements" that never happened. The new equipment they put in is mostly just old ones from the location they closed and some are very worn. They removed a whole row of treadmills and now it's very difficult get an open treadmill. They only have one ab machine when it is one of the most popular ones and always in use. There are always multiple equipments that are broken for long periods of time. This gym went way downhill now that it is privately owed.

Negative experience: I was a member here for about 6 months but decided to cancel. After three months had gone by, I was still being charged for a membership, so I called again and was told they it would be cancelled and the payments refunded. Fast forward 4 months later and I am STILL being charged for the membership, plus random other charges multiple times per month. Now I am trying to contact them AGAIN and they will not answer their phone, I have been calling periodically for the last hours. An absolute racket.

Negative experience: Previously used Hendersonville gym. Loved it except for occasions the morning help didn't show up to open. Oakley gym is nice but overall disappointment. .multiple machines broken/inop for > week, showers broke, no soap in shower dispensers and wifi not working. Wifi nworking at a gym? Seriiusly?

Negative experience: The new management is predatory. I cancelled my membership over a month ago because the gym near my house was closing, before my membership ran out they tried to charge me a club improvement fee as a last minute cash grab even though it wasn't in my original contract. When I tried to contact them online I received no response. I look forward to see where this stellar management team takes this gym after having to close down one of their locations.

Negative experience: This used to be a great gym. WiFi was quick, the gym was clean, and the machines were never broken. Since then they’ve gotten taken over. Now there are new fees, everything is broken, i witnessed ants literally crawling up the wall. When I told the front they sprayed them with windex and left them there. We have sadly had to cancel because of the negative 180 this gym has made.

Negative experience: Management is incredible but I get the strong feeling the new owners are absolutely clueless. They closed my location and the day they closed it they charged me a $50 gym enhancement fee, then herding everyone to this location (Oakley’s) which is overcrowded and members are amateurs with no gym edicate. Honestly, Im going to go to Planet Fitness as it is solid, organized and not over crowded and best of all PF is TRANSPARENT and not trying to churn a dollar by ripping people off. A new gym will come to Asheville and when it does Golds will be a faded memory amongst all gym goers, a dead brand.

Negative experience: Edit/add- now they are charging ANOTHER bi-annual fee in addition to club improvement fee. I did a dispute on my “improvement fee” and won. Y’all should too. This review section made my morning, Seems like I am not the only one pissed off. I managed a high end gym before and this pathetic cash grab is not a contract obligation so stand up for yourself. Don’t trust what they say on site when joining. Assistant manager is the one who signed me up and lied to my face about potential fees that “they would never charge”. They offload their customer service inquiries to a third party that just uses the “we are a third party” excuse. New owners doing a cash grab from Hendersonville location members, charging everyone a “club improvement fee” after cancelling membership. Go somewhere else!!

Negative experience: Since mid-late 2023 this gym when under “new management”, with communications that this would improve. They have literally been the opposite. New member pass system that was a disaster for about a month. And the wifi that WAS working before they took over, is NO LONGER WORKING and hasn’t been for at least 3 months. Taking 3 months to order and fix wifi equipment is absurd.

Negative experience: Appears to be very poorly run. Used to be great! unfortunately since September when the new owners took over repairs, sit for waiting for a long time multiple promises of the Internet and Wi-Fi go on fulfilled one is closing putting most of the emphasis on Oakley had present well over 90% of the cardio equipment is in use and it’s only going to get worse and hell it’s not even 4 o’clock yet I have no idea what the new owners are doing. I’ve discussed with them I was told things would be getting better. Unfortunately, that’s not the case I would love to be able to speak with a couple of the owners not the gentleman who called me last time primarily because what he said, has gone undone , even the staff here and are far from enthusiastic about the way things are being run including their being kept in the dark guys. I worked in emergency medicine if I performed like this, I wouldn’t be around long I’d really love to provide but I’m not trying to be nasty. I’m just sharing observations. Things need to be done. They’re not being done this needs to change or else frankly you’re gonna kill the place .

Negative experience: We used to go to the gold's gym on Hendersonville Road, but they decided to close that location and force us to redirect to the Gold's gym at Oakley Plaza. Can you believe it? This new gym is ridiculously small and lacks a women's room where we can have some privacy while working out. The equipment and space are so poorly utilized, it's infuriating. They have a crossfit room that is completely unused at night, but they won't let us use it. Instead, we're left struggling to do exercises like hip thrusts and goblet squats in the cramped upper body section, constantly being bothered by men. There's another space in front of the treadmills, but it doesn't even have weights. So, we're forced to move plates from one side of the gym to the other just to have enough room to workout. The Gold's Fit room is closed to us at night, even though there's already not enough space for the number of people using this gym. And to add insult to injury, they've closed the Gold's Burn room and the Gold's Cycle as well, all in the name of "cleanliness" and to make even less room for paying clients. We're expected to sign a two-year contract, but nobody bothered to ask for our opinion when they closed the location that was actually convenient for us. This is absolutely unacceptable. We pay you good money for more than this! We demand changes.

Negative experience: I have some concerns regarding this location as it appears to be insufficient in size to accommodate the new clientele who were redirected here after the Henderson Road branch closed. Additionally, the equipment provided does not meet the needs of its customers. It seems that the staff intentionally restrict access to certain rooms for their own comfort. This is quite disheartening considering that the customers expect a complete gym experience. Furthermore, I have noticed a front desk associate behaving inappropriately towards my wife, which may escalate into a significant issue if it persists. It is important to note that my purpose for being here does not involve such matters. Closing the Henderson Road branch may have been a misjudgment.

Fantastic experience: It's a good gym and appears to get a good crowd. Due to the size of it, it may take some walk around time to get the feel of the place. I've done a few workouts there so far and found it easy to get comfortable.

Negative experience: I canceled my membership with them because they took extra money out my account then when I asked about it they basically said it’s nothing they can do or they don’t know why on top of that someone stole my stuff from there and they ain’t care I recommend going to a different gym

Positive experience: Really clean and new equipment, sauna is a great perk. Just wish they had multiples of commonly used machines, especially machine fly, seated hamstring curl machine, and seated leg extension machine. Great value and great staff.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely the best GOLDS GYM in Asheville! Debbie at the Front Desk will greet you with a warm smile every morning! I highly recommend the 6 am Burn & Fit Classes with Coaches Chris Farmer & Will Farmer. They are tough, fun, and a great group of people to start your day off with.

Positive experience: This is the “Cadillac” of all gyms in Asheville IMHO. It is spacious and full of up to date, fairly well maintained equipment and lots to choose from. Staff is friendly and Mgr Steve is responsive and pleasant. Biggest complaint is maintainence staff mopping/clean during workout times with extremely strong smelling chemicals that overwhelm the facility. The air is toxic in there at 10AM weekdays, which is completely counter to why we are all there. Cannot understand why this doesn’t happen after hours. Have requested multiple times that at the very least, they use * green* products. Also bummed, no Wi-Fi for over a week now, but understand they are “ switching over” and this will soon be corrected. If it wasn’t for the chemicals we are forced to breath, I would give this gym 6 out of 5 stars.

Positive experience: Great gym, even when they’re busy they have enough equipment. Staff is super friendly and helpful. The only issue is there’s no pool, hot tub or steam room but for the price what can you expect

Fantastic experience: Not a bad spot at all. I usually have access to whatever I need to get my pump on. The sauna is what I really hit this spot for. As a life-long Wrestler, I HAVE TO have a sauna available. And the staff are always smiling and close by. Very clean, too, btw. It's nice to be back at it after several major surgeries and have a place I feel comfortable with. Good stuff.

Negative experience: Terrible Gym. Facilities are dirty. General Manager is rude. They claim no hidden fees on their sign but this is a lie and they will continue to charge you after you cancel.

Fantastic experience: Great Gold's gym. Super clean, great staff and a balanced amount of equipment. The people were generally welcoming. As a life long gym rat I found this gym to be a good spot for a workout.

Fantastic experience: I've been a member or visited every gym in the Asheville area and Gold's is the best! I go there primarily to lift but all of the equipment is top notch. Gold's also has the biggest space and the more options to choose from.

Negative experience: All of the reviews about scams are true. Despite voicing my concern about this when signing up on Jan 30th for a month to month NO CONTRACT membership. I was assured multiple times that I could pay as I go, not have a recurrent payment put on my card and that the next renewal if I continued would be on February 10th. I had a personal issue and never went to the gym 1 day. I got a couple emails about the payment not going through but couldn’t address them until today, February 15th. Katie Hankley got on the phone and informed me that I need to send an email to cancel and that I owe payment and have been coming to the gym for 2 months. I asked her to read what day I signed up and she says “January 30th, so you’ve been coming for a couple of months”. I said “No hun. Jan 30th to February 15th is two weeks”. Dishonest scam vibes at this place. Literally go anywhere else. Still waiting for verification of my cancellation even though I sent the email 15 minutes ago.

Negative experience: I requested cancellation of my membership several months ago and they are still taking money out of my account. They actually dipped into my account 6 times in one day taking decline fees of $20 a pop and $35 membership fees and I haven’t been to the gym in almost a year. They are horrible when it comes to peoples money. I would not recommend golds gym to anyone.

Negative experience: If you like being over charged then this is your place. After being told the manager was “busy”, she finally came out and talked to me… definitely lacks character values and is another one of those greedy people who just wants peoples money. Really makes me appreciate businesses out there who have ethics and common decency. Take your business somewhere else, I recommend D1 in Asheville- great people. The manager there is very professional, thoughtful, and helpful- total opposite of the manager of golds.

Fantastic experience: This is by far the best run Golds gym in the area. I had an issue that was not resolved to my satisfaction for many months, but as soon as I as I spoke with GM Steve Greene, who in turn spoke with Henry Gaisford, it was solved! Steve has those perfect management skills that are getting more rare by the day. A genuinely nice, sincere person who pays attention to his members and takes pride in his gym. I cannot speak highly enough about him! And you can see the people training with him respect and admire him as well. (The only complaint I have is that the German company who bought Golds shut down all the aquatics! It's a shame and I personally know MANY people who have cancelled their Golds memberships over this and now go to the Y, but would gladly come back to Golds in a heartbeat if they reopened the aquatics. Many people need aquatics and the pool and hot tub at this location were like brand new. There are plenty of gyms all over for young guys who just want to lift heavy weights and grunt. This Golds is beautiful, and WAS the kind of place the whole family enjoyed...back when our parents and grandparents could go to aquatics classes and we could all relax our sore muscles in the hot tub. Whether we lifted too heavy, pulled a muscle, or had medical issues, the hot tub was a lifesaver. Shame on the new owners for shutting down this pool and not caring about our stiff muscles. I bet the new CEO has a hot tub . The aquatics were what set Golds apart from all the other gyms.)

Fantastic experience: My husband and I are signed up for personal training. Tom has Mike Watson and I have Kam Parker. Last Friday, as we were leaving, a small twister came through the parking lot. I had reached the rear of my car as the wind seriously began to blow. I looked back and my husband, who is 90 and on a cane, had not made it across the parking lot and was now braced against his cane in an attempt to keep from being knocked down by the wind. The wind hit me and all I could do was duck my head to protect my face and eyes and hang on to the car. A couple of seconds later I was able to open my eyes safely, looked back at Tom and he was completely wrapped up in the arms of Kam and Mike protecting him and making sure he didn't fall. They were inside the building when this hit and how they got to him as fast as they did I will never know. They brought him safely to the car, then checked on me to make sure I was not hurt. I cannot thank these two folks enough. They are amazing, patient and kind trainers, helping us to get to a place where we can navigate through the world as strong as we can possibly be. But, this, was so much more. Tom's kids, including nieces all have asked us to extend our thank you to them both for keeping Tom safe in a situation that could have been very serious. I, too, thank them. Angels, in some circumstances, come dressed in GOLD'S GYM uniforms. Micki (Mary) Batte'

Positive experience: A typical gYm with adequate but not stellar maintenance. I wish they’d make a decision on whether they’re ever going to open the pool. That’s the reason I went there. I’m about ready to transfer to the YWCA even though that means driving further every time I want to go to the gym. No excuse for that pool in the Oakley facility not being open.

Fantastic experience: I have been coming here for over a year and have only had good times. Morning staff is cheerful, attentive and helpful. They have all the equipment you could ever need and then some. The members are all respectful with no meat head attitudes. I'd recommend this gym to anyone !!!

Fantastic experience: Great experience at this gym. Large layout makes it easy to stay distanced from others, very clean, excellent equipment and well serviced. Very professional staff and management - low pressure to join or increase membership level. Personal trainers, from what I've experienced, are interested in working with you to safely meet your goals. Nice mix of group exercise classes. I absolutely recommend the Oakley Plaza gym.

Fantastic experience: I just love the Studio classes, I highly recommend to anyone! The coach Chris Farmer is the best. He is very knowledgeable, professional and attentive. I'm not an athlete and I don't consider myself as a fit" person but at the Gold's Burn and Gold's FIT classes I feel as I am. I started taking the classes 2 months ago and I already see improvements, I feel stronger and I lost fat weight . Thanks Chris and all the Gold's Gym Oakley Plaza team!
