Intramural Sports Building: Opinions

Positive experience: great gym, quite packed during the middle of the day would highly recommend
Positive experience: I like the place. I go regularly. If I had to complain, the structure is a bit weird. AC cooling is better on mid floor. Oh and it does not have swimming pool
Fantastic experience: State of the art facility with plenty of equipment and space to work out.
Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities. Almost every needed equipment available in the gym. Can be slightly overcrowded though
Fantastic experience: My to go gym at central UM campus ;)
Fantastic experience: Somewhat busy at peak times, going in the morning is the best, plenty of machines, weights, and treadmills.
Positive experience: Overall solid gym. The problem is it’s short on space. The staff do their best to fit equipment in the most efficient way possible but they’re fighting a losing battle. Lots of the equipment is outdated and “under repair”. It’s a great place for pickup basketball and other IM sports but compared to newer collegiate gyms it leaves a lot to be desired.
Fantastic experience: University of Michigan's IM Gym is a newer gym that offers practical amenities for workouts and hosts engaging intramural sports. Though not lavish, it serves its purpose well. The equipment is well-maintained, and there's a good range of options for cardio and strength training. The gym is located conveniently on campus, the gym's accessibility adds to its appeal. It's easy to fit a workout into a busy schedule when the gym is right around the corner. Some of what sets it apart is the intramural sports program, offering diverse activities like Walleyball. Overall, Michigan University gym provides a solid fitness experience with enjoyable opportunities for friendly competition, complemented by its convenient location and welcoming staff. I do wish that they would eventually add an aquatic portion to this gym as I think that would very much elevate it to be competitive with other university gym's. That being said I made a lot of friends at the IM building in the four years that i got to spend at Michigan and the inviting atmosphere definitely played a part in that. GO BLUE
Fantastic experience: Free for Umich Students! A lot of equipments!
Fantastic experience: Each morning at the IMSB with weight training at 6:30 am followed by basketball court for dance at 7:30 am is a blessing. Evening is packed but either the racquetball court or the Multipurpose room or the hallway works.
Fantastic experience: I went to my son's kendo practice, a lovely building with beautiful architecture
Positive experience: Great gym. good equipment, large space. could have some more niche machines (like a hack squat or belted hip thrust machine). and it gets way to crowded around new years and in the evenings, could make more workout rooms in the massive building. Also there should be more than one entrance
Fantastic experience: One of my fav places in AA :P
Positive experience: Good equipment. Too crowded. Rude staff, don’t greet or acknowledge entrants
Negative experience: I love the gym but the fitness classes run over so consistently that if I’m on a time crunch after they’re in one of the rooms, I lose 10-20 mins of a workout so make sure to check the schedule if you’re on a schedule. ** edit - it’s now been thirty mins and it’s the instructor in the studio alone who won’t open the door and let members in. I’ve now missed my entire workout and she’s sitting on the floor texting lol.
Fantastic experience: Everything one would want plus
Positive experience: Great facility. I wish the UM Rec Sports app functioned better. I've spent as much as 15 mins trying to just get the app to work for signing in.
Negative experience: The Building itself is nice, but the equipment is almost always out of order and the student staff that works there is rather rude.
Positive experience: the battles that are fought over the two (2) multipurpose rooms are insane and the queue for the racquetball courts brings out the worst in people
Fantastic experience: I had a great time here! The equipment is in great shape and there's so much to do here (cardio, strength training, basketball, track, racquetball, etc.) and it's FREE for Michigan students! It's a bit of a walk for me BUT I'm not fazed by that. Will that change in the winter once I encounter snow? Possibly...
Positive experience: The building is huge and offers a lot of workout options. The reason I am not giving 5 stars is due to lack of maintenance for the cardio machines. For example, the rowing machines haven't been working properly for the past 6 months and no maintenance happened to them.
Fantastic experience: Lots of options Ive never had to wait for the treadmill
Fantastic experience: Great power flow yoga class with Bhavani!
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Would love a chest supported T-Bar row
Fantastic experience: There are plenty of options for different workout equipment as well as basketball courts if you like to hoop. Often, you will find it to be very busy, especially in the mornings, but later at night, especially near closing time, it's far more free.
Fantastic experience: BAD. The employees want me to smother during my workout and tackled me for not wearing a mansk.
Fantastic experience: Amazingly beautiful gym building with several fitness equipment
Positive experience: Big place, plenty of room, but bring a chair if you're there for club volleyball or any other intramural sport. Park (free) around the back of the building near the baseball field. Enter through the front doors. Long walk on a cold or wet day.
Negative experience: I pay for membership and I showed up today. No warning or email they had closed down the basketball courts before I arrived due to individuals lowering their masks while playing basketball. Extremely unfair to close down the basketball court for everyone due to several individuals. Also no warning messes up people's schedules.
Positive experience: The Best Fitness Center on Campus! Newly remodeled, affordably priced,
Fantastic experience: The best gym facility I have ever been to period. Four amazing floors of premium equipment. Very big spread out building, so it never feels packed. Also the basketball gym is in mint professional condition. They even have study areas, I used to take my books and gym bag and spend the whole day here. I am most productive here and can’t wait for this place to open back up.
Fantastic experience: Great renovation of a classic facility. Tons of space and hardly ever crowded. If it had an indoor track it would be even better than 5 stars.
Fantastic experience: I loved this place because I would come here and play aau basketball and they had activities down stairs and everything and this team is my favorite too
Fantastic experience: Nice facility
Positive experience: Field was great, so the games were all good. No spectator seating. Parking lot a little tight.
Fantastic experience: Best gym I've seen ever! Don't forget to bring your MCard.
Fantastic experience: Top notch club sports facilities.
Fantastic experience: IM building is sick, the courts and just facilities overall are so nice and enjoy all my time there
Fantastic experience: Just amazing
Fantastic experience: Worked out here for 3 years now and have loved it. I think this place has the best facilities of any gym I've used outside of resort style facilities like you find at a lifetime fitness. That said, the machines here are all the same kind and quality as I've had at those resort gyms at a fraction of the cost. Strongly recommended for people of any fitness level looking to go to a gym and are willing to skip on some of the high-end resort style amenities found at those gyms. Strongly recommend going early in the morning to avoid the mass of people here on the evening hours.
Fantastic experience: Really nice facility.
Fantastic experience: Was here with my daughter whom played in the FAAST Basketball Tournament. The facilities were great for them to host the games there. 4 full length courts and plenty of space.
Fantastic experience: Closes too early in summer months. Otherwise great. Beautiful building.
Fantastic experience: It is exciting to be at the pool where best swimmers in the world have swam and talents were found.
Fantastic experience: I was once here and I was running when I saw Steve Carell delivering the mail. I thought to myself “How many elliptical machines do you think it would take to excercise an adult giraffe?” and more importantly why is Steve Carell wearing an indoor balaclava. Very inappropriate.
Fantastic experience: A classic!
Positive experience: Nice facility but kinda busy
Fantastic experience: Closes too early in summer months. Otherwise great. Beautiful building.
Positive experience: Very big and spacious rooms, always clean. The only negative part is that they don’t have a swimming pool.
Positive experience: I love working out here! I like to use the large workout rooms when there's nothing scheduled (the schedule is posted on the door). The mirrors are helpful
Positive experience: Good modern gym. There's 10 squat racks, 4 deadlift platforms and 4 benches, with both bumper and normal plates. There's a dozen other machines and lots of free weights. It can get very crowded at peak time. Powerlifting / Olympic lift equipment can be particularly hard to get a hold off on between 4 and 8.
Positive experience: The Intramural Sports Building is a really nice facility with top of the line equipment and great fitness classes. The gym is very clean and everyone is respectful. The basketball courts are in great condition. The summer is generally the best time to use the facility because most of the students are away. The start of each semester brings a massive surge of people and makes it difficult to get in a decent workout without battling for equipment - even the fitness classes get overcrowded.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic team of staff
Fantastic experience: This place is awesome. It was rennovated a few years ago & it's got new equipment (might be old, but maintained really well). I usually go there for the group fitness classes through Group X. I love those classes & it's very comfortable to work out at the IMSB & I particularly like the classes held at the mulit-functional room (small room but has varied excersize wieghts). Everything is clean & seems new.
Fantastic experience: Buff
Fantastic experience: Clean, air conditioned gym with lots of equipment!
Fantastic experience: Super nice, brand new gym that has all the equipment you could possibly ask for.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities, brand new!
Fantastic experience: Clean, spacious, and well taken care of.
Fantastic experience: Nice and new gym
Fantastic experience: It looks great after the recent remodeling. Do not forget to check the 2nd and 3rd floors. They are all dedicated to cardio machines and offer a great view. Food and beverages are advertised for sale in the check-in desk but are quite pricy. Better to go to the vending machine or bring it from elsewhere. Parking is available on Hoover, especially past the railroad.
Fantastic experience: Renovation is beautiful. Staff are always very nice. If you're looking for some good pickup basketball competition on campus, this is the place. Four beautiful basketball courts make it so you'll never have to wait long to get in some action. Training room is also very nice with everything you need for a good workout. I would definitely recommend going here to keep in shape. I lived in Alice Lloyd on the hill but still found my way to the IM building quite often.
Fantastic experience: It is amazing how they kept the beautiful historical details of this building, which give it so much character, and yet it is equipped with such modern technology. What an excellent renovation they did! And they did it in a very eco-friendly, sustainable way... true to UM ideals. Also, the selection of fitness equipment here is top-notch. Very impressive... and I am not one to be easily impressed by fitness facilities.
Fantastic experience: Best place on campus to work out, and so close and convenient. Better hours would be nice though. A bit later.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful space with plenty of equipment!
Positive experience: I wish there was an atm inside
Negative experience: Closed on holidays.
Positive experience: Beautifully remodeled but it still can be a bit of a maze
Positive experience: This building is definitely an upgrade from the CCRB, but it still isn't big enough and does not have enough equipment to really accommodate everyone without it feeling crowded.
Positive experience: The staff is usually pretty dry. The building itself was renovated though, and has lots of new equipment and quite a bit of room.
Positive experience: If you are coming to use the gym equipment, it is good. The equipment is clean and new. However, there are thousands of people that come to this university, yet the gym has 5 power racks, 3 other (non cage) racks combined for 8 total. This is not nearly enough. People have nights where they are waiting 15-20 minutes for a rack. Not acceptable, saying as the university can afford to have more. They have 4 bench press racks, also not enough. The gym overall is a good size and pretty spacious, but still gets packed during the school year. It was newly renovated so like I said, its clean. Just not easy to get in and out like you want.
Fantastic experience: Great place to workout. The building is a little confusing until you find where everything is, but since the renovation the IM building is the best place on Campus to excersise.
Fantastic experience: Ever since the revamped these facilities I love them. Lots of fit people in different room doing different things so you don't feel watched or judged. Racquetball courts are great and all the equipment is up to date, clean and easy to access.
Fantastic experience: Clean, spacious. Close to home
Fantastic experience: This building and gym is STUNNING after the renovation.
Fantastic experience: Newly renovated, all the equipment, advanced cardio.
Fantastic experience: Great gym and rec center, newly updated with brand new equipment and full remodel.
Fantastic experience: I'm an alum who uses the facility for the fantastic racquetball courts. A 24hr day pass is available for a very reasonable $10/person.
Fantastic experience: Very nice and very clean. For a student I would definitely recommend
Fantastic experience: Clean, tons of options, quite affordable.
Fantastic experience: Clean
Fantastic experience: The Best Gym On Campus! Newly renovated, reasonably priced, state of the art equipment, & tons to do.
Positive experience: Updated building. The weight room is very nice and spacious. There are free lockers to put items in. It is always very clean.
