Love this place! I go here once in a while to Boulder and they have a good sized boldering section. I like how they are always changing the routes, not sure how often, but it’s always different when I go. Routes are challenging. Both the staff and the climbers seem pretty friendly.

Our comment from FitFit United States about Planet Rock:

Planet Rock, located in Ann Arbor, is frequently recognized as one of the best climbing gyms in the area, offering a fantastic atmosphere for both newcomers and experienced climbers alike. The staff is often described as knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely caring about their members' climbing journeys. Many users have praised the gym's well-designed routes that cater to all skill levels, providing a broad variety of climbing experiences.

Positive Highlights:

  • Exceptional route setting, with many climbers appreciating the diversity in difficulty and creativity.
  • A welcoming and helpful staff that creates a friendly environment for everyone.
  • A variety of climbing options including top roping, lead climbing, auto-belays, and bouldering.
  • A nice cafe offering quality coffee, perfect for recharging between climbs.
  • Several amenities such as fitness equipment and a dedicated bouldering area.
  • Great community feel, where climbers of all levels can connect and support each other.

However, there are some areas that users feel need improvement:

  • Concerns regarding cleanliness—some users noted that the gym can be quite dirty, with old holds and dusty surfaces.
  • Inconsistent and often rude customer service experiences with some staff members.
  • Inadequate safety protocols were mentioned, especially during busy hours or when kids are present.
  • The gym's hours of operation can be restrictive, particularly for those with busy schedules.
  • Some users felt that routes could be intimidating for beginners or lacked sufficient beginner-friendly options.

Overall, while Planet Rock can improve on cleanliness and customer service consistency, it remains a beloved spot for climbers in Ann Arbor, boasting a solid community and great climbing experiences.

Fantastic experience: One of the best gyms I’ve ever been to, glad to call this my home gym. The staff that work here are some of the most compassionate and knowledgeable people in Ann Arbor and genuinely care and want to teach you about their profession. The route setting is some of the strongest, static setting out there which makes it most akin to outside that I’ve seen at a gym before. The walls are really nice and have a lot of different features allowing for all sorts of climbing. However, the facility has a couple issues—biggest of which is that they should really hire a separate cleaning staff as the gym gets pretty icky sometimes. Dust on every surface is not an uncommon thing to have happen. Some of the holds are also really glossy and super old. From time to time I’ve seen parts of them flake off, and sometimes the holds straight up rip off the bolt. Another big thing is the Wi-Fi goes out on a near weekly basis and causes the entire desk to essentially shut down for half an hour making people unable to purchase merchandise or check in for the time being. Lovely gym, lovely route setting, lovelier people—but a tad yucky sometimes :)

Positive experience: Love this gym, but staff can be very rude, especially Nathan. A lot of my climbing friends have shared similar experiences, especially with this staff member.

Fantastic experience: Hard to find a better gym. Great route setting and walls for any level of climber. Friendly staff and reasonable pricing for indoor climbing!

Fantastic experience: Great gym, nice setting, super welcoming staff. Definitely made the lack of rock in Ann Arbor bearable!

Positive experience: my coworker and i (we both work at a newer gym) visited here. some older/different practices are in place (byobd) the routesetting was pretty cool and i enjoyed some flowy top rope routes but i didnt like the bouldering area. its an older gym so i expected the glassy holds and nasty mats, but it's so cramped i felt like i was about to get kicked in the face the entire time i was bouldering. i probably won't go again just because i felt on edge the entire time i was there. their top ropes are cool tho! the guy who did my test was super chill.

Negative experience: Wow, I have never in my adult life been spoken to like I was spoken to your employee Matt. Attempted to do a top rope test and was belittled and embarrassed in front of everyone. Unbelievably loud, unprofessional, and condescending. First and last time I come to this gym.

Fantastic experience: Auto-belays, top-roping, lead climbing, bouldering, an indoor gym, and a coffee shop? Oh my! I love this rock-climbing gym because they offer a bit of everything for everyone - whether you're brand new to climbing or you're a Yosemite climbing champ, this gym has courses for you. I particularly like that staff members are helpful and laid-back, the atmosphere is fun and friendly, and the amenities are clean. It's queer-friendly as well - they even have a gender neutral restroom! Score!

Alexandr Cullen 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Words can't describe the eternal joyous smile of Matt who works and also climbs here. I'm graced by the incomparable joy that radients from him anytime I step into the gym. Any slander sent towards this man will truly land on deaf ears. I'm honored to not only call him a worker I encourage anyone to go to help for but also a fellow climber. This also extends to the rest of the staff. They're stacked with an incredible team of long time and new climbers. Climbers I've climbed with before they started working there. You can truly see how these people's passion for climbing also extends to their work. You'll always leave with a smile of challenges conquered each day.

Fantastic experience: First time ever trying rock climbing. Staff was great at getting us going and answering questions. Coffe drinks were great too.

Koty Tanner 1 year ago

Negative experience: First time here. With that being said the staff was super nice and helpful. On the other hand some of the local climbers are Inconsiderate as it gets. My friend and I were in the bouldering room getting ready to try this problem..... dude literally steps right in front of my friend and starts climbing the wall. Its like really man he was stepping up to the wall as you cut him off. Now moving over to the top rope room.... people don't pay attention to you climbing, as I'm belaying my friend numerous people are walking under him with no clue to the world. It's upsetting bc this is the closest gym to where we are staying. Will probably not come back and make the drive to different gyms from here on out.

Negative experience: This (Ann Arbor) location is EXTREMELY DIRTY - be careful not to get ring worm; I don’t understand why this is the case when their Maddison Heights location is cleaned regularly. If you’re bouldering, depending on the time, expect 1/3 - 1/2 of the routes to be blocked off. You’d think that they would use closed hours to do this on the days they open late / close early, but no.

Aaron 1 year ago

Positive experience: I kept hoping I was wrong about Planet Rock. After climbing here for a year, I think the gym is a 3 if you know how to climb and a 1 if you don’t. If you know how to climb- - the settings are alright. There are some interesting ones, but I wish there were more where body positioning is why it’s rated harder rather than smaller holds that are further apart - trying to climb with someone who’s heavier than you? You’re gonna have a hard time. Unfortunately top rope is less safe with little friction at the top. The ropes are old and tend to get twisted when you’re lower a climber. Which I guess introduces some friction… but not when you need it. - there are often people hanging out in the bouldering area that will walk under you while you’re climbing. The walls are close to one another, there’s nowhere to safely look at climbs for the back wall, and staff doesn’t seem to ensure safety. So be aware -the gym is the dirtiest I’ve been to in my twenty years of climbing. I’ve seen bandaids on the ground for weeks. I don’t think they wash the holds between settings. It’s wild. - the hours suck If you don’t know how to climb, drive to Detroit for Dyno. Climbing is dangerous and Planet Rock is not going to set you up for success. - staff has told me they’ve had to rescue multiple climbers because their partner did not know how to belay. This is a problem with their safety check before climbers can belay and lack of oversight. I’ve seen so much dangerous behavior on auto belay, top rope, and lead climbing. Today a group of young teens came in and staff showed them how to use the auto belay for less than 5 minutes. They did not ask any participants to show that they understood. And then the staff left. These kids had no idea what they were doing. Another climber and I had to help them. Staff never checked to make sure they were climbing safely or even attaching the auto belay safely. Do I still climb here? Yes. But if another gym opened up closer, I would switch in a heartbeat. And I never take new climbers here.

Robby Kim 1 year ago

Positive experience: I'll start with the pros to share what the gym does well and go on to a few of my biggest criticisms. edit: updated to 3 stars after thinking more about it. PROS: - The setting is quite good. Interesting boulders - grading accuracy varies as with all gyms - Cave in the sport climbing area is unique and not found in most modern gyms - 2019 Moonboard NEUTRAL: - The age of the gym, holds, and etc. doesn't particular bother me but might bother others if you're used to new-age modern gyms CONS: - The hours are simply ridiculous. This gym opens at 2PM on two days, 10AM on two days, and 8AM the rest. The cost of a membership is $2 less than DYNO but the gym is open for 23 hours less per week. Of the many gyms I've climbed at, PR has the worst hours and its not close. - The back "alley" in the bouldering area is just dangerous. There's space for maybe a single file line of people between the two walls but the number of close calls I've seen of people getting hit or fallen on is far more than any other gym I've been to. - Barefoot rule. I heard this was a precaution but no other gym I've been to prohibits being barefoot in the climbing areas.

Fantastic experience: I love climbing and follow Planet Rock on social media. Today, I happened to drive past the gym and decided to check it out. Grant kindly gave me a full tour, sharing insightful details about Planet Rock's history and future. Although this area is a bit of a drive for me, because of the amazing team, I'll definitely be climbing here in the next few weeks!

Fantastic experience: I traveled to Michigan recently to see my boyfriends family and had the pleasure of stopping at Planet Rock! I travel often and usually stop in to climb at the local gyms, so I’ve seen quite the variety of what gyms have to offer… for better and for worse. Planet Rock was incredible! I was truly impressed with the route setting and variety of routes on the wall. The features in the Ann Arbor gym were also impressive! Getting to pull on a plastic stalactite legitimately made my week. The fitness area is also complete and pleasing. The gym also has a cafe that is high quality coffee and very reasonably priced. My boyfriend and I enjoyed a coffee mid climbing session pretty much every time we visited. It really is a nice touch.. and also encourages a little bit of a rest! Grant was an outstanding staff member/manager and I enjoyed learning more about the gym with him and getting lead certified through him. Grant also shared about climbing in the surrounding area, and I felt much more aware and proficient by the end of our visits. Stoked my boyfriend is from Michigan and I’ll be back to climb more in 2024! Thanks Planet Rock!

Positive experience: Been a member for over a year. My experience is that it's a solid older gym that needs some updates. The biggest thing I've seen and where they deserve credit is that they genuinely seem to listen to reviews and customers. In the last year, I've seen them update policies that are more casual climber friendly, install dust collection units in the bouldering area, change out walls regularly, and proactively sign and fix issues when they happen. Most of the staff are friendly but given the nature of the industry, there will always be high turnover and a few less than amazing people. I've heard one instructor talk as though his way is gospel as opposed to gym policy. Things I'd like to see improved... More downclimb holds in the bouldering area. Ive seen too many beginner/intermediate climbers get to the top, fully gassed and only have harder holds to climb down on. Next would be better flooring. Lastly, sinks outside the bathrooms so you can wash your hands without having to change shoes just to go into the bathroom. Looking forward to another year of climbing.

Fantastic experience: Brought kids 7yrs-12yrs old. The staff were great with kids and so very patient. Everyone had a great time climbing "until their arms were out of breath"

Momo79 1 year ago

Negative experience: My kids have been members of this facility for a while and never had an issue with the staff until today. One of the employees named grant proceeds to threaten these teenagers bc one of their friend was confused with the daily entry fee, which he ended up paying anyway. These kids are teenagers with no behavioral issues, no violence history and very friendly kids. Having said that, grant proceeds of threatening the kid and harassing him by taking his picture (don’t know why and he didn’t even explain himself). He takes things even further, pulls one of the friends in the office “alone”, btw- this kid is underage, threatens him with membership termination and proceeds to terminate another’s kid membership. This is a first issue and he bans the confused kid, which he could give a warning, terminates another kids membership, threatens another kid in his office “alone” and still have the audacity to tell these kids that he will be investigating. Investigating what? As a parent I would appreciate a contact or some sort of explanation bc I’m 100% sure that there are about 15 kids that are ready to cancel their membership bc he banned their friend for no reason at all!

Michael Beans 1 year ago

Negative experience: The staff were super nice, but this place is disgusting. Every hold is incredibly greasy, the bouldering mats seem like they’ve never been cleaned. Just felt gross the whole time.

Matthew Harrison 1 year ago

Negative experience: The facilities themselves are decent, little dirty but overall a good gym. The staff on the other hand needs improvement. About half are nice and helpful, the other half enjoy making you feel beneath them. They’re smarter than you and they want you know it. Disrespectful and rude, not how customers should be treated at all.

Jonathan Owens 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Planet Rock's staff is top notch. The facility is amazing, with a separate area for bouldering only. Some of the most difficult routes in the entire state. If you're looking for a challenge, look no further!

Steven Price 1 year ago

Negative experience: It’s a good gym, but not being able to pause your membership when you’re going to be out of town for a while is absolutely insane. Even to cancel, you have to give them 30 days notice before you’re going to be charged. And then if you want to rejoin at a later date, they’d charge you the $50 new member startup fee again. Basically making it so that you might as well just pay full price even when you won’t be using the gym. The monthly membership costs is already very expensive compared to other gyms, but they get away with all of this because it’s the only one in the area.

Positive experience: One of the better old school climbing gyms. Could use better ventilation (Big A Fans) and chalk scrubber .

Negative experience: Their HVAC system is either broken or they just refuse to use it. Always extremely stuffy and sweaty and dusty and crowded. Please use your HVAC system.

Negative experience: Be sure to schedule your visit at least a day in advance. They will not allow you to climb unless you do their intro class, even if you are experienced. And the class ”has to be scheduled in advance ".

Fantastic experience: A bit expensive, but bouldering walls here are sweet :) Plus my 17yo--who had never climbed before--loved it!

Matthew Nelson 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: This is a majestical climbing gym. Yes, majectic would be standard fare, but this place exceeds that, hence "majestical." I would describe it just so, regardless of it's absence from dictionaries. Go there, and you will be among the most friendly, helpful, and genuine people on the planet. Cheers!

Ally M 2 years ago

Positive experience: Friendly staff, great gym area. Wish there was more bouldering area, but honestly still very very good.

Julie A 2 years ago

Negative experience: Dirtiest climbing gym in the country. Bouldering rocks are old, dirty, slimy. Safety mats need replacing, seen a ton of injuries because the top layer folds and bunches up. It might be an OG gym but it hasn't improved with the times.

Positive experience: Great gym, route setters are amazing. I've found the staff to be pretty great. I just wish they would put a bit more effort into cleaning.

Fantastic experience: My girlfriend and I came here last weekend and we loved it! We're both new and did beginners lessons, our instructor Nathan was super helpful and patient with us, the whole staff is very welcoming and informative!

Positive experience: The route setting is good, the walls have fun features, and they have a great climbing shoe selection, but it can be very crowded. Staff is generally friendly and helpful.

Tekla Mendez 2 years ago

Negative experience: Friendly staff, but as an experienced climber I saw something on my first visit I have never seen at a gym - an autobelay did not catch a climber and she freefell, absolutely no support from the autobelay (she was clipped in correctly the whole time). Fortunately she fell from boulder height but was understandably winded. Staff proceeded to climb up the route using an adjacent autobelay to take it down, however did not alert climbers next to the route and nearly hit a climber with the slack of the broken belay. Overall the place seems to be understaffed for how busy it is, with no accountability for safety. Beyond this incident, many people were walking under climbers and there was no instruction from staff. I wish I could recommend, staff were very friendly, but this place is not safe for top roping/auto belay.

Alexandria Cell 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: This is not a bouldering gym. They have a whole bouldering section, and they offer one “one-time bouldering exception”, and if you attempt to go back a second time to boulder, they will require you to take a surprise $45 90-minute top rope certification class. This weirdness unfortunately wasted an hour of my family’s time, as we didn’t budget 3 hours to boulder AND take a 90-minute course.

Bill Weisberger 2 years ago

Negative experience: I came here with my 4.5 year old daughter on Saturday afternoon so we could climb together, and we were asked to come back in six months because she's not 5 years old. That age restriction isn't written anywhere on the website that I saw, and furthermore I did find that the Spider Monkeys program at this gym is for kids aged 4-6. I can understand wanting to set rules around age for everybody's safety, but in the case where a climber parent comes in with a single child - not a parent coming in with a group of 10 little kids and no hope of keeping an eye on them all - I'm confident we would have been safe. For comparison, I'm sure the adult to kid ratio for the Spider Monkey program is not 1:1, and again that program allows kids younger than my daughter to climb. This is the only climbing gym in the area, so we'll probably be back, but it was a bad experience. Please revisit your age limit rules and consider whether they're necessary or logical.

Matthew DeRubertis 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: This is one of my FAVORITE gyms in the country! The staff are super kind and knowledgable, the facility is really comprehensive in what it has to offer, and the setting is spectacular. The gym strikes the ideal balance between accessibility for newcomers and a proper rock climbing training gym. Their crack training setup is simply the best I've ever seen. I love this gym!

Nics3451 2 years ago

Positive experience: The size of the gym and the way it is set up is pretty cool. I like that there's a whole room dedicated to bouldering. There is quite a bit of overhang and slab and everything in-between. I do wish there was a cave in the bouldering section - it's kind of why we came to this gym - the cave is in the rope climbing area and the holds and markings in there are a joke. The holds are old and probably haven't been cleaned or replaced since the building opened. It is pretty frustrating when all of the boulder routes start with foot chips that are basically glass. The air filters, also, might be as old a the building. The air in this location is not good - and not because of the chalk. The place needs maintenance, replacements, and cleaning. It could be a great gym, but I wont be back soon.

Rebecca N 2 years ago

Negative experience: This is NOT family friendly or beginner friendly. They are over priced. They are exclusive and judgmental. The interactions I had both on the phone and in person were met with a demeaning attitude. They seem uninterested in promoting rock climbing to newcomers and will make you feel completely inadequate. We have been to other locations throughout the nation with our kids that rock climb (parents who do not) and have never had this experience. When we complained, the manager “didn’t hear” me speaking to her- though I was the only customer present. This was in addition to the 10 staff just sitting around and also eating, who proceeded to mock us in our statements. In fact read the rest of the reviews about the unfriendly staff who is unwelcoming to newcomers as well as overpriced services. It is too bad there is not competition in the area. They are definitely not in the caliber of other rock climbing facilities we have been in.

Dan Bierkamp 2 years ago

Positive experience: As a bouldering experience, it has room for improvement. When not busy, it's a lot of fun, with a variety of routes. However, once it gets busy, it gets PACKED. Easily a risk of coming down on people. With such a small amount of wall space, nearly a third is dedicated to comp style boulders, which is a little disappointing. The biggest problem I've noticed lately, is that they are not beginner friendly. They have made strides in allowing a short orientation for bouldering only instead of forcing the full learn to climb class, but actual beginners are gonna struggle with a lack of beginner routes, and those that do exist are closer to V1 than V0/VB.

Sarah Bridgeman 2 years ago

Negative experience: I've only been bouldering for about six months, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. My biggest complaints about this gym: 1) Very old holds - no friction and just kinda gross to climb on. 2) Only 25 percent of the gym is actually graded, and I found the grades to be pretty inaccurate. 3) It can get very crowded, to the point that people are standing in front of unoccupied routes, totally unaware. This was pretty frustrating because I felt like half of the gym was just unavailable to me. 4) The mats are very old and need to be replaced. 5) There are NO DOWN HOLDS! This was my biggest concern. I would top out on a very challenging route and would have to tiredly climb my way down the route. I saw many people fully jumping off the top of the wall, which was very unsafe considering the gym's crowdedness and the quality of the mats. 6) For the top rope section, routes do not contain the same hold color but are indicated by tape underneath each hold. This becomes very confusing as you're climbing (maybe this is just me, because I'm not used to this). Overall, the gym needs some TLC (new holds, new mats, actual grades). The people were very pleasant and I had some nice interactions with other climbers, but the quality of the actual gym is lacking. Won't be back (I'm not from here anyway lol).

Fantastic experience: Fantastic staff, fun routes, and always feels like a safe and relaxing place. I started climbing here when I was 16 and was nervous about entering into the new environment, but I quickly found that the staff work exceptionally hard to make you feel welcome. I’ve always been greeted with a smile and know I can ask for help with a route any time. Planet Rock is a place where climbers of all skills come together, so I never feel out of place if I’m struggling with a route. New climbers and experienced climbers always end up talking and working on problems together. The community is wonderful. All around an incredible climbing gym, will always be my go-to when I’m in Ann Arbor.

Tons of different climbing options on both sides of the gym plus an actual weight training gym on the second floor. Highly recommend.

Negative experience: Extremely kind staff and a very fun atmosphere. But the bouldering was significantly lacking. A large portion of the bouldering area is Comp style which is a massive waste of space. Additionally the routs are very bland for the most part. I have climbed at a variety of gyms and the boulders at this planet Rock are very lackluster in comparison to other gyms.

Ross Smyth 2 years ago

Positive experience: Planet Rock is amazing for climbing. I just started climbing this year, and go multiple times per week now. I primarily boulder, and now that U of M started classes again, it seems the walls are being reset more regularly. My only minor complaint about that is sometimes the more beginner problems are lacking. But I guess just git gud. I do have a real, major complaint though. Kids. During the week they are everywhere. And it is not fun trying to climb around them. They run around the bouldering area, they run under you when you are slipping, they get on problems that overlap with the one you are in the middle of doing. Just unware, clueless, and unsafe. I'm fine waiting for some kids to mess around on a problem. But when they are running under me, jumping on problems that overlap mine just because the staff says "five minutes," it's frustrating. I understand the affluent Ann Arbor parent market is a good market to tap into, but trying to just relax after work gets hard occasionally. And the kids are there almost every weekday so too bad. Saturday afternoons are the best.

Fantastic experience: A+ great place to learn or advance your skills. Truly feel you are not judged here and everyone is helpful or learning themselves. Staff have always been friendly to work with. Check their website for training classes, prices etc. only downside is it can tend to get to crowded but goes to show climbing’s popularity is increasing.

Fantastic experience: Planet Rock is a Great Facility. I have been going here to the Ann Arbor area since I was very young and keep coming back. I am now part of a climbing club from my university and we go to both facilities at least 20+ times a year. The staff is very helpful and willing to give any advice when I have a question on a route or about a set up. The prices are kind of high but that doesn't stop me from coming back during my down time from school. Also, having a little business background, I know how difficult it is to keep such a great facility clean and safe. The bathrooms/locker rooms are kept very clean and they have a ton of cubbies for people to put their stuff. They also have a little coffee shop inside which is nice to have nearby when on a break from climbing. I can say this. That personally, I have a great appreciation for those who keep this facility clean and safe and, as long as I live in the area I will always be going to Planet Rock because of the great atmosphere and awesome people I have met. For my review, I give them a 5 out of 5.

Fantastic experience: Love this gym! My daughter and I go as much as we can. Either Ann Arbor or Madison Heights and we have always found the staff super friendly and helpful! Fantastic experience: My first experience was with friends, and the staff seemed eager to show us the ropes. Since then I have been frequently. The facility is wonderful and I am always excited to walk in and see a new formation to try. I am new to the sport but have received great help in all areas that I have tried so far. My only complaints would be PARKING! As this is out of their control I still keep the 5 star rating. Also I live about 45 min away so I hope someone gets on building another gym closer to me!

Fantastic experience: Love coming to Planet Rock, they take their climbing seriously. Pretty slippery old holds, but that makes it a good spot to train without burning skin and to increase grip strength. Plenty of bouldering and lead, a whole section of autobelays for solo climbing, and great espresso to get you ready for some plastic pulling.

Positive experience: Wonderful gym, friendly staff, but please for the l love of god label your routes. Not a single one of the 15 slab routes is labeled, which is rough for new climbers.

G Brandolino 3 years ago

Negative experience: Like half of the routes in the gym are 5.11s right now, which is ridiculous. Most of the 5.11s are even harder than they're rated. Not sure how this gym expects new folks to develop a love of climbing.

Negative experience: I have a learning disability and ptsd. I took a class to learn how to belay. I ended up passing but was humiliated in front of everyone. The instructor himself was kind but he got kind of frustrated with me. There was another instructor who looked at me and laughed while I was practicing. I regret going to this location and regret taking classes here. Honestly traumatized me from doing anything new.

Positive experience: Pretty expensive if you aren't committed to a full year membership, but excellent facilities: plenty of wall, good route-setting, fun boulder problems (although they are frequently not beginner-friendly), and off-wall training and exercise equipment is also available. The staff is pretty friendly and generally knowledgeable, the classes are a bit expensive but usually pretty helpful, and there are always people around who are willing to trade a belay if you're flying solo and autobelays aren't your style.

Fantastic experience: Climbed at this gym on a Tuesday evening during a work trip, it’s very impressive. Lots of everything (autobelays, top ropes, lead, bouldering, training equipment), plus a big gear shop and I think a coffee shop (was closed when I finally saw it near the end of the evening). Getting checked out to climb was quick and painless. Definitely the best selection I've seen of hand, finger, and other kinds of crack climbing in a gym.

Fantastic experience: Took the kids here for the first time. The customer service experience was great and the facilities allowed up hours of family fun.

Fantastic experience: Great height and interesting routes. The grades can be a little inconsistent so don't get discouraged if you can get up something you think you should.

Fantastic experience: A great gym, especially considering the smallish city that is Ann Arbor. Excellent, helpful staff and a wide array of routes and difficulties. Good culture as well - lots of positivity, friendly members, chill vibe.

Fantastic experience: We love this place--Good variety of top rope and lead routes and they change up the routes pretty often. The staff is nice and seem genuinely happy to answer climbing questions

Fantastic experience: First time there took a safety class with Alex, learned a lot felt confident climbing safely afterwards. I only climbed the rope side, they also have bouldering. Will be returning soon

Fantastic experience: Staff is super friendly and helpful, the gym is well equipped. I'm used to softer West Coast gyms so the grades are Planet Rock were humbling. These grades are fair in that they transition easily to outdoor grades. My partner and I got a day pass, went for lunch, and were allowed to come back after our break. Great experience and I'll return next time I'm in town.

Fantastic experience: Tallest walls I have ever experienced! Very friendly and helpful staff! Loved the self baleying stations

Fantastic experience: I've been coming here since I was like, 8 years old. The place is amazing. It's practically perfect.

Fantastic experience: Great gym for bouldering and top ropes. Can be quite crowded but overall, it's a great space with great amenities and very helpful staff.

Positive experience: Solid local climbing gym, although their staff is really frustrating and either doesn't get trained in customer service or just doesn't care to provide it. But it's our only option for climbing so we deal with it (and it seems like the owners know they're the only game in town). Their hours can be frustrating if you're trying to use it as your primary gym, some of their equipment doesn't always work (and their staff doesn't care when you mention it) and it's on the older side. They also seem to set the most creative routes for the 5.10+ climbers, which can be frustrating, but it's workable. We're grateful to have a local climbing gym, I just wish they did a better job of making it seem like they actually care that we're members (sentiments shared by multiple friends who are also annual members).

Positive experience: When we first walked in as first times the staff seemed a little annoyed that we didn’t know where to go, what to do or that we didn’t fill out the waivers ahead of time. We just didn’t feel very welcomed initially. The facility itself is really cool, people are friendly and helpful 5 stars for that aspect. After the initial setback the staff became friendlier and asked if we needed anything and if we had any questions. It was a good experience in general, cool place, but the first 10 mins could’ve been better.

Fantastic experience: Super great experience! I tried on new shoes for a long time but the staff were very patient and helpful, giving me tips and allowing me to test them out. It was sanitary and their routes were great! Will definitely be going back.

Fantastic experience: A good sized, well-kept climbing gym. There aren't many routes suited for more inexperienced climbers but I can't blame them. It feels like the gym is slightly catered to more experienced climbers overall. EDIT: I wrote this review when I was relatively new to climbing. I used to think it was tailored to experienced climbers but after having gone to this gym regularly I do think there are routes for everyone. If you're new to climbing don't be intimidated! Great staff and great people at this gym.

Fantastic experience: Took the climbing course and enjoyed climbing at this gym! I like rock climbing because they grade the routes and there is a definite wall (no pun intended) when you get to harder routes, but they have good beginner routes that are challenging but still possible! Great time!

Fantastic experience: Planet Rock is an awesome community and the only option for indoor climbing in southeast Michigan. Really happy to have somewhere to climb in a relatively flat state while my fiancé finishes up his PhD.

Fantastic experience: Great staff, people in general and a good environment for climbing / bouldering. Good variety of routes which are being constantly rotated with new ones. Very happy with my membership and time spent here.

Fantastic experience: Very good climbing gym with friendly staff. Lessons for new climbers are 45 dollars and include all gear.

Fantastic experience: Excellent community and a wide assortment of different kinds of climbing! The bouldering wall is super large, and there is also crack climbing, lead, and top rope options as well.

Fantastic experience: I had a previous bad experience here which has recently been amended, so I'm writing a follow-up review. We were helped quickly and politely. The climbing was awesome. Tons of routes. Can be a bit packed on week days. We went later in the evening during a 7-close session and it wasn't too bad at all! Ali was great. A very professional and knowledgeable climber who is clearly passionate about the sport. Will return for more climbing sessions. Thanks!

Fantastic experience: Really good climbing gym, it has a very large selection of routes that are set very well. They do require that climbers have belay training, even if you are just bouldering, which is definitely an inconvenience for anyone who doesn't know how to belay.

Fantastic experience: I haven't been to many rock gyms but of the few I have, this one was the nicest. Friendly and helpful staff and clean facility. Plenty of options for climbing making it a nice place for climbers of all ages and skill levels. You do have to have a tie in/belay class, or test out of it, before you can climb by yourself or with your kids.

Brian Goulet 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Awesome place to get out of your comfort zone and go rock climbing. They have top rope, lead rope, and bouldering. Lots of options for every level of climbers, from beginners to experts. They even have an area for kids to learn. Highly recommend trying it out. There's a mandatory lesson for beginners, but after that you can sign up for any session you'd like. Only shame is the sessions are limited to 2 hours due to covid restrictions.

Negative experience: No day passes. Just looking to climb a couple times while I'm home for the holidays. Cheapest option they have is still $160!

Fantastic experience: Great community, clean and well kept up venue, and they're doing their best to keep us climbing and keep safe.

Fantastic experience: Very fun climbing gym. So unique from the Madison Heights location, they both have their own special flavor!

Sean Andrews 4 years ago

Negative experience: The gym itself is nice, they do a nice job of changing out routes and everything is well maintained. Now, like many climbing gyms, they charge a $50 "new member fee" for new monthly members. But if you need to take a few months off (say, you need to leave for the summer...college town and all), you have to notify them 30 days in advance of your last payment (so, effectively, 60 days prior to when you actually want to stop climbing) and then, when you join back again said few months later, they are kind enough to charge you the "new member fee" AGAIN! What possible purpose could justify this new member fee? What costs are they incurring in "allowing" you to rejoin less than 3 months after you left? They don't say. In a college town, this is nothing short of bilking college students out of money. This company should be ashamed of itself.
