With two indoor tracks for running and a comprehensive strength training area filled with top-notch machines, there’s no shortage of ways to stay active.

State Gym: Opinions

Negative experience: Not to be a jerk, the equipment is super nice and all, but none of the staff know their own hours or polices. I have a pretty weird schedule, so typical gyms don’t work for me, and multiple times (in multiple years), I’ve called ahead to make sure the area I’m trying to use will be open for me, and they always assure me it’s fine, but refuse me at the door, citing working hours and polices they didn’t mention an hour beforehand. Not to mention the times I’ve tried to bring my family; every person over the phone will say they can come along with a parent, but will be refused because it isn’t family hours? I’m not typically a Karen about these things, but it’s a little frustrating to get ready and make a protein shake or change into swimming suits just to have to go right back to my dorm, for 4 years in a row. Literally only giving it two stars because the equipment is state of the art and it’s great when you can actually get in.
Fantastic experience: Cool gym, cool people and nice management.
Negative experience: I usually just go to the gym to look at myself in the mirror, but this gym doesn’t have that many and sometimes there is people in the way. Like hello obviously I’m looking at myself people.
Fantastic experience: Excellent place for workout. I go 5 days a week for workout at State Gym. It generally get crowded at evening or late hours.
Negative experience: Managers very rude. Condescending.
Negative experience: Place reeks of skin and hole
Fantastic experience: Great place to workout. Lots of different ways for you to get your fit in - rock climbing, swimming, weights, machines, etc. Around noon it is a bit packed.
Fantastic experience: This place is kept tidy with the front desk people being very helpful, definitely check this place out.
Positive experience: Climbing wall rains occasionally. Not the immersive experience I'm looking for. Otherwise all other facilities are amazing.
Positive experience: Gym free for students of Iowa State. Daily price for visitors. Many equipment available with some sports options basketball, badminton, running track
Negative experience: Stupid rules, cant use chalk, cant clean and jerk etc... why even have lifting platforms or label yourself a "Gym" if youre going to have "Fitness Club" rules.
Fantastic experience: Place for badminton, volleyball, gym swimming
Fantastic experience: This place has a little bit of everything. A climbing wall, free weights, pulley weights, a pool, "YOU NAME IT!?"
Fantastic experience: Guys! This gym is so wonderful! The staff is so friendly and cool and a little bit awesome! Tell all your friends to use this gym it is the #1 gym on campus! I personally really enjoy the 2 (yes you heard that right, TWO!!) different tracks they have to offer! I could walk laps around them all day probably I think. #TeamState
Positive experience: Sometimes can be verry crowded. Could be bigger, but otherwise is a great facility.
Fantastic experience: It's a fun place I like to workout and this place has good equipment
Fantastic experience: Overall Good, but the pool always has its own schedules which usually difficult to find out… they don’t post the open time online. You have to ask time by time…
Positive experience: good
Fantastic experience: Great place for recreation
Fantastic experience: Perfect place to stretch yourself
Fantastic experience: A great place for recreational activities
Fantastic experience: Nice place to work out and do exercise!
Fantastic experience: Incredible space/ equipment. Just add some peloton
Positive experience: Ok place for a 7th grade basketball tournament.
Fantastic experience: Kind, knowledgeable student staff working. Impressed by the variety of equipment and two tracks available!
Fantastic experience: I work here. It's phenomenal, love everyone here, beautiful pool, tons of weight machines, zero complaints.
Fantastic experience: Great facilities for students' fitness, but some of the on duty receptionists are not really familiar with court schedule causing a lot of confusion to use badminton court
Positive experience: Decent gym, but can you guys add more then just like 10 treadmills for a gym that size?? I have to go at like 10pm just so I don’t have to wait in a line for one
Negative experience: Worst gym I've ever been to. If you're a bodybuilder or powerlifter, AVOID this gym at all costs. 1.) They fogged ALL the mirrors in both locker rooms to prevent pictures 2.) NO chalk 3.) Have to wear shoes, can't go shoeless for squats even 4.) A dress code 5.) No banging the weights 6.) Must use the safety clips at all times EVEN IF you're lifting a lone and its safer without the clips. I'm a professional bodybuilder & This is a joke of gym. I got harassed by the staff for the list above. Save yourself the $20 day pass fee for planet fitness.
Fantastic experience: Great place, always busy.
Positive experience: Great equipment, clean, and busy. Expect to wait on flat bench between 7&9PM.
Negative experience: Staff where rude during a simple misunderstanding. Even after explanation and acknowledgement of mistake, staff was unable to “chill out”.
Positive experience: Good gym with good equipment. The fitness class provided are really fun and the staff is Nice. However the facility hours changes during Summer and the pool is only available at Beyer Hall during lunch time. The membership will cost you 40 dollars à month which is expensive .
Fantastic experience: One of the best gyms I have ever been to. Lots of equipments. Very clean. Massive in size. And did I mention the rock climbing? Yeah, been to couple other schools / gyms, cannot compare anything with the Iowa State University State Gym. Just marvelous!! Definitely miss this!!!
Fantastic experience: Boy this place looks wonderful
Fantastic experience: Fully-equipped and sanitized
Fantastic experience: Amazing place to go for a swim!
Fantastic experience: great place
Fantastic experience: Great variety of equipment and pretty nice staff
Fantastic experience: Excellent service!
Fantastic experience: State of art facility at Iowa State University.
Fantastic experience: They are always busy but it isnt their fault. There are other spots in the gym where i can still workout. They change their towel consistently for sanitary purposes. They have most of the machine for specefic muscle. They also offer classes such as yoga, barre and cross training. As a student of this school, these are all free.
Negative experience: Not easy to navigate
Positive experience: It's ok but not very cosy and there is no paper to wipe sweat so improvement is needed. Iowa state is enforcing unlawful orders which is unconstitutional and should be prosecuted
Positive experience: Great gym! All the equipment you could ask for and its all well kept and in working order. Only downside is that it often gets very busy around the afternoon and it often becomes a hassle to find an open bench or use a certain machine like the leg press which they only have one of.
Positive experience: Awesome place, but as the semester has started it is always, always crowded. This virus has also screwed things up. We need at least 50-100% more of everything. At least 10 more power racks to do deadlifts and squats are needed
Fantastic experience: The best place for all the fitness savy people in iowa state university. The gym is very well equiped with all the excercise equipment. They also have a rock climbing wall and a leisure pool with high-dive. The gym space is also available for reservations for tournaments, student groups etc. There are multiple courts for basketball and volleyball/badminton. They have 2 indoor running tracks and a complete cycling studio! There a lockers available for day use as well and they also have individual shower rooms. There are fitness classes over here which you can join. Above all, this is free for ISU students :)
Fantastic experience: They have everything for everyone
Fantastic experience: Best. Gym. Ever. Their staff is super friendly and incredibly helpful. I especially like the rock climbing wall. I had never been very successful with climbing but the folks at state gym made sure I had a great time, and made it 3/4 of the way to the top to boot!
Fantastic experience: Best gym that currently exists
Fantastic experience: Clean, new facility with good staff. It can get crowded.
Fantastic experience: Has an AMAZING Outdoor Recreation Program and climbing wall!
Fantastic experience: Great amenities and selection of equipment
Fantastic experience: Lots of weights, few racks. Never touched the track or pool but they look great. Don't go early.
Fantastic experience: Wide range of equipment and helpful staff
Fantastic experience: It's a very safe environment.
Fantastic experience: Clean facility. Cares about covid measures
Fantastic experience: State > Leid
Fantastic experience: Best gym that currently exists
Positive experience: So I guess this is where ISU people work out. No wonder their athletic teams are SO competitive.
Positive experience: Good gym with lots of new equipment. However, usually really crowded -especially at peak hours which makes it hard to use the equipment that you want. Would suggest lied gym over state.
Fantastic experience: Out of the place...bestest gym EVER!!! Love to hang out here! The vibes, the energy the equipments .... everything about STATE GYM is awesome.. i love playing racket ball here...and swimming pool badminton court basketball courts are nice
Fantastic experience: This place is great. I usually go here around 10pm after the rush, so there’s plenty of equipment open when I am there. The track is pretty nice (wish it was longer). Also I wish ISU would take out some of those (useless) treadmills and replace them with more lifting equipment, or even more rowing machines. Still an awesome place, I’d pick this over any private gym any day.
Fantastic experience: It’s a really nice place. Most of the time is crowded which is unfortunate because the equipments are very limited.
Fantastic experience: Pool
Fantastic experience: Best gym on Iowa states campus
Fantastic experience: Usually packed with students, but has a decent equipment selection.
Fantastic experience: Super place but it can get crowdy at times
Fantastic experience: Go rock climb
Positive experience: Meh
Positive experience: Missing some key equipment, but makes up for it with impressive amenities
Positive experience: Nice renovation.. beautiful architecture Historic building
Positive experience: Great Iowa games except for the gyms upstairs without air.
Positive experience: Machines are good, but a lot of the benches are so worn out that they wiggle. Friendly and very helpful staff. Around 5 PM the place is sometimes very busy and waiting times are common. On the flip side it is a cheap place to work out in.
Positive experience: Better than all the other recreation places on campus. A very good gym. The swimming pool times are something that takes getting used to, but overall it's pretty good.
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out. Have been coming here for 8 years. Never a dull moment. This gym has the environment you want in a gym. The equipment is nice and the prices are fine if your no longer a student.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in town, no doubt about that. There are times that there are a lot of people in it, but luckily their hours are very versatile. If you prefer a quieter time I would advise to come in very early in the morning. There is also the advantage of classes that you can sign up for, for literally any kind of gym practice available (crossfit, yoga, hit, etc), plus their facilities are a state of the art in technology and machinery available. The stuff is very friendly and helpful.
Fantastic experience: Great Place to work out, most often open and open environment. Can be somewhat crowded after the start of the year when everyone makes their new years resolutions.
Fantastic experience: Has everything for workouts
Fantastic experience: Great variety with helpful staff
Fantastic experience: A very nice gym with plenty of exercise equipment and space for doing a variety of sports. When you first walk into the gym, you'll be greeted by the giant rock climbing wall. After getting through the front entrance, first floor has a bunch of weight lifting equipment, the casual pool that is accessible through the locker rooms, and 3 courts toward the back of the gym (usually setup for basketball, volleyball, and badminton). Equipment rental and towel service can also be found on the first floor. Going up either set of the stairs, the second floor has all the cardio equipment, along with some more weight training equipment, and an indoor track. If you know where you're going, you will also find a connection to the "old gym" where there are 2 more basketball courts, another indoor track (banked), and access to the personal training facility. The sky bridge to Beyer hall (the actual lap pool) has more elliptical machines. The gym tends to be most busy during the first month of each semester. However, you can easily avoid the crowd by showing up early or workout during the day while other people are in class. There are plenty of free group classes that you can also take. Check the recreational services website to find out group class schedules.
Fantastic experience: Bros and weights.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in Ames. If you are an alumni, get a membership and join. No time like today to get in shape. They have a great personal trainer program also.
Fantastic experience: Great place, have a wide range of equipment. Sometimes its too packed during peak hours.
Positive experience: Amazing trainers, wide range of options for working out
Fantastic experience: Great place, have a wide range of equipment. Sometimes its too packed during peak hours.
Positive experience: Good place to workout. Gets super crowded at the beginning of the semester and is generally full during the evening (after 6 pm)
Positive experience: State Gym is a huge facility with a ton of relatively new, top quality equipment. That said, it is almost always crowded which can be frustrating, especially if you like to workout with free weights. The bench presses and squat racks are frequently occupied right up to close (midnight during the week). There may be an optimal time to go (like during the day when many students are in class), but I haven't found it yet. I personally wouldn't attend this facility if I didn't have to pay for a membership with my tuition, but if you don't mind a really busy gym, this place has great amenities.
Fantastic experience: One of Iowa State University gym's. It is a great place to: swim, play indoor sports, run, and lift weights. Plus, you can rent outdoor equipment inside.
Fantastic experience: everything is pritty updated and the tv in the pool area is asume
Positive experience: It’s a pretty nice place to work out my muscles after hurting my brain too much. Love the fact that having number of cardio machines which countered to the very few lifting equipments on 1st floor.
