Grit Fitness - Schererville: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Love this gym and the way they are always upgrading the gym as well! The staff is also great and always willing to help too!
Negative experience: Mean
Fantastic experience: The first visit was nice. The woman that showed me around was very friendly but the site was so far from my house
Fantastic experience: The first visit was nice. The woman that showed me around was very friendly but the site was so far from my house
Fantastic experience: This is a fantastic gym! I love the atmosphere, the arsenal/prime equipment and the ability to use the daycare while I’m working out.
Fantastic experience: My adult kids go there. They like it because it is a very clean gym. Staff is always available and willing to help and answer any questions. They got friends to also join. So far, it has been good, and they feel comfortable. Definitely recommend!
Negative experience: Was a loyal member for about 5 years, brought many new people to this facility and always talked very highly of the gym. I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the lungs and brain mid year, they were extremely difficult with me about this and demanded I bring proof of my diagnosis to even pause my membership. If I ever recover, I will not be back here again and would never recommend this facility again.
Positive experience: I like that they have a 3 day pass offer so you can see how the gym feels to your gym routine. I'm looking for a gym that I can focus more on lower body and this gym has all of the stuff you need for that, that other gyms in the areas don't have. (Like the pendulum and hawk squat machines) I do wish they had to smith machines at least but then again I'm the minority on that because they have dead lifts. Their prices aren't bad to other competitors and I like that you can pick which plan works best for you. I might go with the month by month plan so I'm not locked into a contract, I have my main gym that has a sauna and pools so I would not need that here I do wish they had more plate rack set ups so your not walking all over the gym trying to grab some
Negative experience: pay for my daughter and son to workout here, the owner walks up to me at another facility and tells me that my son has no business at his gym, only my daughter is a member there, i told him both have memberships there, he says no only your daughter does, very unprofessional for a business owner to come up to me like this, lost all respect for this man, , another member once told me the owner olso came to hin and told him something similar, it’s been several months and still upset about the situation , I would never recommend this facility to anyone
Negative experience: The equipment itself here is nice, fairly standard but not limited like a planet fitness. My main issues boil down to cleanliness and staff. The locker room is always dirty, none of the weights whether free weights or plates are appropriately racked, and the staff is always either congregated by the desk gossiping and standing around doing nothing, or their less than friendly “trainers” are on the gym floor shooting dirty looks at folks using the equipment while they instruct their clients to do 45 minutes of fluff volume on the same machine. I expect to feel welcomed and encouraged in a place that I pay well to attend, and if there were more convenient options in the area to compete, I would have opted for them instead had I known what I do now with my experience. Just hope that their management actually reads these and heeds some of the criticism and concerns other gym goers have expressed here in the reviews.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in the Region!
Fantastic experience: This gym has really stepped its game up after the remodel. I now look forward to working out and think it's probably the most well rounded gym in the region. Check it out.
Fantastic experience: What an awesome training facility. I loved the range of equipment, the space and the non-intimidating environment. The staff are friendly & welcoming! If you’re looking for a gym, look no further.
Negative experience: Do NOT attend this gym, they hold you in a predatory contract, the staff overstep their bounds and offer zero mutual respect or genuine problem solving (up until you force their hand). Here, I explain my experience in portions but if you need to find out how to exit your contract early, see "Resolution". Across three incidents, their financial system overcharged my account. The first one was resolved by the manager, Nicole Boricich, after showing electronic bank statements. The second incident was much more difficult to resolve. My partner and I went in person, Nicole stated Chase had made the issue, refused to refund the money unless I showed printed bank statements, and then instructed me to have my bank order a stop payment on Grit Fitness. Which Nicole then said the stop order would send my account into collections. My partner, now frustrated she would threaten my credit score before solving the issue, assertively demanded for a proper solution. In which, Nicole threatened to call the cops on us with no legal grounds. Shortly thereafter, she refused to acknowledge us and walked away. We had retrieved bank statements, called to meet the owner, and then the following Tuesday met Bo DePaoli. He reaffirmed stating Chase made the error and we should ask the bank where my money was. After speaking with a teller, she showed that Grit Fitness had double charged me and made no attempt to refund it, so I filed a claim through Chase which quickly got my wrongful double charge refunded. The third incident happened about a week after the second. I was given email notice my account would be charged $50. After calling, Nicole said my bank had put a stop payment on the account even though I explicitly said not to and had no record of the stop payment fee that Chase would've charged me. Resolution: My partner, who does business with a few lawyers familiar in contract and business law, had been fed up that three instances of overcharging and incorrect billing issues had occurred, and the management had only deflected the problem away. Knowing that Grit Fitness had previously refused to terminate the contract, he drafted what's known legally as a Demand Letter. The letter he wrote detailed the three incidents; quoted the violations against the Indiana Deceptive Consumer Sales Act (IC 24-5-0.5-3). Where he specifically noted IC 24-5-0.5-3(a), (b)(8), and (b)(20). As well as, the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA); he specified §806, §807, and §808. Then, the letter offered Grit Fitness one calendar month to terminate my contract, refund my money, and address the employee misconduct or else we'd have to resolve the matter in small claims court. Included in the Demand Letter was a statement that in the event management would dispute the claims, my partner had a series of video recording confirming our experiences with Nicole and Bo. Thankfully however, the day we called to schedule a meeting with Bo to deliver the letter, Nicole answered and said she had previously called Bo and agreed to cancel my membership as well as waive any fees without resorting to litigation. They were unaware of the Demand Letter when they decided to cancel my contract, but if you are experiencing something similar: continue to call and meet with the, express your disdain with the service, and ensure you are recording everything they tell you because you will hear contradicting statements and outright unlawful claims. If they continue to refuse to cancel your contract or return your money, consider seeking legal counseling. If you are capable, draft your own Demand Letter (there are online templates) and present the owner formal notice before taking the matter to small claims court. Bo if you happen to be reading this, in your first episode of your podcast, you said the biggest advice to an aspiring business owner is to "do your due diligence". I hope your experiences with my partner and I urge you to begin doing yours.
Fantastic experience: GRIT is a friendly, well-staffed gym with an incredible range of equipment and a variety of workout classes, plus childcare!
Fantastic experience: I don’t use this facility often as i live out of state, but I come here 1-2 times every couple of weeks. They have an affordable day pass, which is really nice. The gym is always clean, equipment is never broken, its never too crowded in here, and everyone is really friendly. The front desk person Sam is super nice too, she always greets me when I come in and is super helpful. 10/10 love lifting here.
Positive experience: Not much has changed over the years. It's a place to workout.
Negative experience: Stay away -predatory cancellation policies, gym is small/ratty, and they’ll take your money while hiding behind contracts to hit you with fees when you’re trying to stop the madness. Read the contract carefully Gym owner is the typical business POS that prefers cash over providing a good service.
Negative experience: For the price I pay, I expect it to be clean every time I go in. The men's locker room is disgusting! Sinks and toilets are ALWAYS dirty. The other day there was hair ALL OVER IT from someone shaving. Even when no one is in the sauna, it smells terrible because it is not properly cleaned, and there is a lot of damaged and broken equipment. Many gym-goers (primarily teenagers and young men) also disrespect the equipment, which is annoying. The cost of membership should undoubtedly be reduced. Given the circumstances, it feels disrespectful.
Fantastic experience: Great gym for the price, this place has all the equipment you need and you can always depend on it to be open 24/7
Fantastic experience: I like this gym, I think it would be nice if the upstairs had some benches to go with the Olympic bars. And one more power rack.
Positive experience: Not impressed place was dirty it smells bad, only one bench in the locker room could've been like 8 lots of pads torn up on equipment. Handles and stuff for cables worn out and missing pieces
Fantastic experience: Great place for working out and getting fit
Fantastic experience: Great place for workouts for men and women everything you need is there
Negative experience: My membership was up in March I went in both January and February asking if I can cancel my membership once I completed my year membership. Both times I was told that I could not cancel until March 4th both employees gave me this date. My contract specifically states that I needed to give a 30 day notice which I attempted to do both in January and February. I went in on March 4 like I was told and canceled and they charged me another month plus the annual fee. I should not have been charged anything since they did not allow me to give a 30 day notice… my obligated contract was for 12 months. Wont be going back and would not recommend this club to anyone.
Negative experience: Garbage gym, garbage owner. Find a different place to train. Cheers!
Fantastic experience: From the last time I was at Grit 2 years ago, to moving back to the region. I was blown away by the aesthetics and newer equipment. I only wish it was 24/7 but you can't be picky with all the other great things they have to offer. I am proud to be doing my physique training here.
Positive experience: Sauna is working now in men's locker room.
Fantastic experience: Been coming here for quite some time. Friendly staff, good / clean atmosphere, and affordable especially for the variety and quality of equipment.
Fantastic experience: This facility is beautiful! Perfect for families with small children with the childcare option. I also loved the variety of classes and how spacious it is there! They also have a very welcoming staff!
Fantastic experience: If you are looking to get stronger and tone and want to be challenged make your next trainer Sam or Freddy. They are seriously committed to meeting your fitness goals and want you to succeed. Thanks to Sam I’ve already dropped a pants size since we started working together! The gym is clean, clients are there to work out, not hang out, so equipment is readily available or frees up quickly.
Fantastic experience: BEST GYM EVER!!!
Fantastic experience: Spacious, clean, owner and staff super professional and welcoming
Negative experience: This gym was super scummy. I moved and they would not let me revoke my membership at first (said it needed to be in person) and when I called for help again the person who answered gave me someone else’s information to email and there was no response. Ridiculous it’s like they hold you hostage if you move gyms for whatever money they can squeeze out of you.
Fantastic experience: This is one of the better gyms in the area. The employees are incredibly helpful and accommodating. Trainer Sam is very knowledgeable, from strength training and cardio, to nutrition and how to calculate macros. She invests a lot of time in her clients. Dixie and Deana are fantastic with group classes, my favorite being the RIPPED classes. These two women are always prepared and invest a lot of time in creating new routines so the classes are never too repetitive or boring. I’ve been going to gyms my whole life and it’s hard to find one where there’s this much encouragement and support. This is a positive environment and well worth the money.
Positive experience: Decent gym, friendly staff, easy check in
Positive experience: Great employees, great machines and all together a good vibe
Positive experience: Good environment to work at but expect at least 1-3 machines to be broken for months until they fix it.
Fantastic experience: Great equipment, staff, and members. Can’t wait to visit again!
Positive experience: Location was under renovation when I visited and cardio section was closed off. I'm disappointed about the discontinuation of 'bring a guest' option from the membership packages.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, atmosphere and staff . Would be amazing if they had a couple more ab machines
Positive experience: They are charging an extra $10 for nothing. I got them through my insurance and now to have access when no one is there they want to charge. What a robbery?? Just Nickel and diming people.
Positive experience: Facility is really nice and the price is cheap, but the staff at the front desk always looks so bored. Edit: they don't accept cash, which isn't illegal, but made things difficult.
Fantastic experience: This was my first visit to this gym and I was impressed. The front desk attendant was SUPER friendly and helpful….Equipment and facility is clean and well kept. Highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: Great place to workout. The remodeling job is way over the top. Nice and clean, all new machines, great cardio area. Very nice and professional employees.
Negative experience: Management has no explanation on why my door access continually gets revoked when I'm paying for 24/7 access. I've been going here for 3 years and never had an issue up until the owner released a new subscription which is $39.99/month. I was bumped from $15/month to $28.99/month and now this guy thinks he's got the next Alphaland in Schererville Indiana. Gyms not worth $39.99/month will be taking my business elsewhere instead of beating around the bush for 3 months on why my membership isn't working. If you're considering coming here RUN and stick to Anytime or other gyms
Fantastic experience: Great gym with friendly staff. Definitely worth checking out after the new remodel. There is space here for people with any workout style and the prices are reasonable compared to any other good gyms in the area.
Fantastic experience: I’ve been going to Grit for about 3 years. I love it. Especially since the remodel. The staff is always nice, and it’s never too crowded in the mornings. There are a lot of familiar faces, as a lot of members are long term members. I’ve done personal training, I’ve participated in classes as well. I love that I can access it 24 hours a day. Any time I’ve had an issue, it’s quickly resolved! They have a lot of options for those wanting to weight train in anyway.
Negative experience: As a member who has hard time coming in due to life commitment etc.. I reached out to seek help in getting routine and or trainer rather than cancel... Great and excited to come. I work midnight's as RN and I slept through my 9a appointment first time. With reach out via text to follow up with me we rescheduled. I show up and am told she is with someone. ? Staff not friendly and scurring very apparently looking at calendar and a work phone on desk, and then letting me sit for awhile with no interaction or update.. I was then told , she did not see your text and has another customer at this time. That was it! I asked how can you have a phone and use but not able to manage it effectively? Not my fault but they certainly wanted to highlight how I no call no show first time. Really!?. I asked why would you want to let member feel so upset now and bit hurt as I was actually very excited to embark... Response was well there is nothing we can do for you, only one trainer and you would have to reschedule. Like?! Will take a bit to reschedule or it might be worth paying out of contract, it feels they are all about money as this point - no empathy or compassion!
Negative experience: Multiple equipment out of service or in bad conditions, no one seem to fix or replace any of the equipment
Positive experience: After reading these reviews, I'm no longer interested in checking out this gym
Negative experience: Half the strenght machines on the second floor are either out of service or missing mechanical parts. Most lockers in the men's locker room don't close property or missing hardware, some other lockers don't have a door. Mens locker room continues to lock of cleanliness.
Negative experience: They've changed their monthly memberships to bi-weekly without giving any notice to long time current members. I went from paying 17.99 a month to 17.99 bi weekly definitely canceling, Showers are dirty and mens locker room smells horrible.
Negative experience: This is seriously the trashiest gym that i have had a membership with! I have four different gym member ships and this by far is the worst gym! You can get access to the gym without even paying which i plan on doing after i cancel, and the equipment is so dated, and the dont fix anything! Im telling you dont sign up just come after desk hours the door is always open.
Positive experience: For what it's worth it's a pretty decent gym with a good selection of free weights and machines. The down side is that some of the older machines are in a serious state of disrepair and some of the free weights are just missing. The sad part is that some of the members here mistreat the equipment (people will throw weights when unnecessary) and trash the gym (leaving water bottles, used paper towels lying everywhere) especially after staff hours. Some members have also taken to trashing the locker room when they get the chance (holes punched in drywall which have since been fixed, lockers ripped off hinges etc). I've enjoyed my almost 2 years here but I just wish other members would treat this like the "professional" gym that it is, and to the gyms credit the staff, or at least some of them, make an honest effort to keep the gym clean but it's hard when patrons will just trash it overnight.
Negative experience: Here’s the quick rundown (pun intended) 1. No sign on the building (it’s weird but that aggravated me since I had to guess which business to go to.) 2. The atmosphere was very 90’s underground. Very dirty. It didn’t feel clean and I felt like this gym belongs on the south side of Chicago. 3. The equipment is very worn and rundown. 4. This place should convert to Planet Fitness. At least then you could lower your expectations. Bottom line: Save your time, money, and your precious gas. Find a better option because this ain’t it.
Positive experience: I’m just going to say that I miss World Gym. There was a certain “standard” when it came to that place. Generally what I mean is more serious people would workout there. Now it seems to attract the type of people that go to planet fitness. I see a lot of people hogging up equipment and abusing it. The new benches are already torn up and the things are broken. There is no more protein shake bar which is kind of a downer and the price has also gone up. I’m not sure why They charge more for fewer amenities. Also the sauna and locker room have not been redone and the same cheap lockers that break easily are still there. Also lots of fees. I only go here for convenience and that’s it.
Fantastic experience: Great place to get your exercise/workout going right, spacious, well equipped including showers, tanning and daycare.
Fantastic experience: Live love grit
Positive experience: Please up date boxing equipment so many more fighters coming to this gym an you guys aren’t realizing it please accommodate on behalf of all the fighters switching to this gym
Fantastic experience: I love Grit Fitness because of the classes. Zumba is my favorite. Amera is a fabulous instructor . Such an awesome friendly atmosphere. I’ve found all the instructors to be extremely friendly and energetic. Give it a try, you’ll love it!!
Fantastic experience: Good gym
Fantastic experience: Day care is great, facility is always clean, polite and professional staff
Fantastic experience: love this gym, very clean and friendly, great staff!!!:)
Fantastic experience: Swole af
Fantastic experience: Absolutely love this gym. 24hr access is really helpful to avoid the rushes and workout before going to work. Child care is provided. Located next to several other businesses for convenient shopping. Dumbbells only.go.up to 125 but they have a landmine attachment for the squat rack which is a huge plus
Fantastic experience: Best gym I’ve been to compared to a lot of others from around the world. 12\10 do recommend!!
Fantastic experience: I really enjoy this gym! For me, it's the best one around! They are even running a promotion to try it out for 3 days free!
Fantastic experience: Un exelente lugar para construir un fisico d playa toy boy
Positive experience: Old machines
Negative experience: They only want your money, and the more they can trick you into paying for a sub-par at best gym the better! Just another con artist contact gym!
Negative experience: The only thing they take care of it Is taking the membership fees on time and making alot of restrictions to force you staying for ever My wife went there just to try the gym for a month And without telling her they upgraded from monthly membership to yearly and on the second month they took almost $65 for an equipments maintenance which is the only gym doing that and they told her it goes automatically from monthly to yearly and she went back to the gym to cancel the membership they told her you have to pay half year amount which is $150 Money hungry Can’t wait my off day to take my wife and my two brothers to cancel the worst membership Last time i went there over a year ago and they keep taking the membership fees Never called me to see why I don’t go to the gym Just they want your money nothing else
Negative experience: I loved this gym... until I was charged for training sessions I never asked for, never intended to use, and didn't use at all. They refused to refund despite the fact that I didn't use the sessions. The money isn't much to them, but the unexpected charge put us in a hard spot and they couldn't have cared less. Very disappointed.
Negative experience: I only tolerate this gym because it’s pretty much the only game in town. I was recently charged for bringing my 11 year old son to the gym at 5:49 pm on a Saturday. They deemed it “abusive.” As soon as my contract is up I’ll be searching elsewhere. Poor equipment, machines are constantly broken. There are likely better options in this region.
Negative experience: I used to love this gym. After COVID-19 hit, I couldn't access the gym and lost out on my prepaid membership for many months of the service I paid to have with them. Now, I was excited to return and get back to my workout routine. I found out they raised their prices, restricted the 24 hour access that came with my membership type and 3 of the machines I wanted for my workout were out of order. This USED TO BE the gym you wanted to go to in NW IN. Now it's just a cash grab with subpar equipment and terrible observance of the pandemic guidelines. Worst yet, I can't get refunded any part of what I paid ahead so I was ripped for all intent and purpose by a gym that failed to provide and fulfill our contract. I am so sorely disappointed to see what a pitiful excuse this has become and wish it could still be my home gym. Oh well, guess it's Planet Fitness since they don't gouge and actually have a capable staff at most locations.
Negative experience: Joined due to the 24 hrs and free weights 2 months back. My first months fees were returned because I was off a digit on the payment. They tried to charge me 80 dollars for a 20 something membership for fees etc. Updated my billing info to the correct account. Now this month same thing and I get a notice they want another 80 even though it's not my fault this time at all. The equipment is run down and the air conditioning is non existent. Staff is rude and the place needs some cleaning. It's not worth the hassle to be a member here. Wish it was updated and a better staff in place. It could be a great gym, just isn't right now.
Fantastic experience: Great stuff, nice atmosphere, clean and fancy!
Fantastic experience: I’ve been going here for 2 years. Great gym. 24/7 7 days a week. Best gym in the area for the price
Fantastic experience: I want to give a shout out to one of the new trainers at this location, Jason. He is passionate and loves working with and helping his trainees. If anyone is considering a personal trainer, I would highly recommend him!
Thank you for that wonderful review Helen. Jason is definitely a great asset!
Fantastic experience: Ever since being taken over from Fuel Fitness this gym has only gotten better! You can tell the owner really cares about the quality of the gym and is always making improvements.
Fantastic experience: Met my first goal this morning. On to the next.
Fantastic experience: Update 10/31/2020 entire staff was very polite and made me feel very welcome the young man cleaning men’s locker room was one of the most mannered and kind young men I have ever spoken to didn’t catch his name but great worker the young men at the front desk were amazing as well
Fantastic experience: Huge gym with everything you need.
Fantastic experience: Erica is my trainer & she is AWESOME!!
Fantastic experience: Love the staff! Hildi is PHENOMENAL!!❤
Fantastic experience: Been a gator/fuel/ worlds / now grit member for a long time, great up keep at the gym, and the revamped cedar lake location is BOMB. Great service great people
Thank you for that awesome review Mike!
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out! but needs more care on cleaning the gym and locker room.
Fantastic experience: Best gym in the area by far. Has everything you need. Great staff, trainers, equipment, classes, and amenities. Definitely recommend coming in and testing it out.
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Fantastic experience: Great workout environment. Good front desk clerks. They make great shakes too!
Fantastic experience: Erica is my trainer & she is AWESOME!!
Positive experience: Regular gym. Kinda smells. Equipment is both new and worn
Hi Charles. Thank you for your review. As you may have noticed we recently changed our name and soon are going to be doing a complete renovation which should take care of any smells and worn equipment :D
Positive experience: World Gym. Mad busy but good gym. Great access options.
Thank you for that awesome review Thomas. We have it in our plans to not only upgrade the space but also make better use of the existing space once we start the remodel.
Positive experience: Glad to see they still have some Hammer Strength machines.
Negative experience: Don’t come here to work out literally drove up to this gym vip member 24 hour access so they say got up to the door tried to swipe member tag to get In only to be locked out tried to call no one answers the phone word to the wise get the basic membership and save yourself some money or just go to a different gym
Positive experience: Its a gym. Used it for a day while I was in town; they were friendly and accommodating. I like their sauna and they have decent euipment
Positive experience: I've been going the world/grit for a few years and today was not a great day. Lots of responsibility placed on the members to clean appropriately and social distancing efforts were kind of ignored.
Negative experience: Masks are required by the County & State, but the workers refuse to enforce it! Most people do not clean the machines after use either. Zero sense of responsibility regarding public health.
Fantastic experience: Ever since being taken over from Fuel Fitness this gym has only gotten better! You can tell the owner really cares about the quality of the gym and is always making improvements.
Negative experience: Was the best gym in the area in my opinion, until they started double charging me during the quarantine, and when I asked what was going on they didn't care. So now I'll go to a lesser gym, but at least the next gym might care. UPDATE 17-Jun-2020: The gym again double charged me, when I tried to address the issue with them Hilde wouldn't let me talk and told me that basically my bank statement is wrong or I don't know how to read a bank statement, so that was great. If I'm going be paying higher prices, I have no reason to stay at this gym.
