Positive experience: Good club...

Negative experience: The center reorganized all the equipment in the facility this week. They must have hired a 10 year old to do the consulting because none of it makes sense. Nothing is organized by equipment type or type of exercise and it makes the space more crowded now. I’ve been a member since around 2018 and every year it seems they do something to make the experience worse while raising the member price every year.

Negative experience: My recent experience at Washtenaw Fitness was very disappointing. Carrie at the front desk was rude and dismissive, which immediately set a negative tone. Even after being told her approach came across as nasty, she showed no apology or effort to correct it. This matters because the front desk is the first point of contact for every member and guest. A gym isn’t just about exercise; it’s often where people come to release stress, find motivation, and improve their mental health. A kind approach can uplift someone; a harsh one can do the opposite. I encourage management to take this seriously and provide additional training, because professionalism, empathy, and respect at the front desk are not optional: they are essential.

Negative experience: Great facility but absolutely terrible management, Dawn Lyons specifically who is the center director, she has no idea about customer service. I was a regular and the front desk always waved me in so I assumed they checked me in but they hadn’t been. Dawn was working on this particular day and I was walking back to the locker room and she screamed at the top of her lungs after she looked me up in the system “YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE HERE” …. Absolutely insane. It was a simple situation of a new card with a new expiration date but I hadn’t been notified the months I was coming in, a simple update but I paid the past due balance and cancelled my membership, can someone culture this woman to how we conduct business in civil society, I wonder if I was white if she would have done that? She always treated white members better.

Fantastic experience: My first day at the gym I was so excited to use the heavy bag. Every gym I've been to before with a heavy bag always lies about its availability and when it disappears it stays missing for months with no accountability or care about getting it reinstalled. I was so disappointed when I showed up and I heard the heavy bag just disappeared and they didn't know when it would be back? I thought this place would be different; then came Shannon and Jen. Shannon explained to me it would be resolved soon and not to worry. Me, informed by my past heavy bag traumas, didn't believe him. He went and got Jen and not only did she assuage my doubts, hook me up with a guest pass, she called me later that day to say she confirmed the parts are on order, and called me a couple days later when it was reinstalled. Immediately I see where my dues are going: facilities, staffing, and customer service. I look forward to kicking the hell out of this heavy bag -- way cheaper than a therapist. Thank you Jen and Shannon!

Fantastic experience: Excellent gym equipment. Two pools, one of which is a smaller pool heated to 99°. Water aerobics classes; other aqua-exercises. Multiple kinds of classes like yoga, tai chi, modified classes for Seniors with arthritis.

Negative experience: I had an extremely frustrating experience at the WCC gym on April 7th. I was stopped and told by staff member Corinne Kuala that I wasn't enrolled in PEA 115 and had been using the gym "illegally" all semester — something I was completely unaware of. Despite being flagged every time I scanned in, no one notified me until it was too late to fix the issue. I explained that I’m on a scholarship that would’ve covered the class and had no reason not to enroll if I had known. Still, I was pressured into paying $156 for a membership on the spot, which felt unfair and aggressive. I’ve used the gym regularly, followed a class schedule, and got to know the staff — only to be treated like I was doing something wrong. I’ve requested a refund and filed a complaint. Poor communication and handling all around.

The Health & Fitness Center at Washtenaw Community College

Thank you for sharing your experience, and we apologize for the frustration you encountered. We’d be happy to discuss this further and, if needed, connect with the college, as they handle all class enrollments. Please stop by the Member Services desk or give us a call.

Negative experience: The Employees were extremely rude to me today! I decided to head to the pool with my girlfriend and her brother ( it was her brother’s first day at this gym). Upon going to the pool, I see an employee (Linda) chase down two women and begin to grill them on their pool attire in a more than harsh manner. I didn’t know the exact situation but it seemed real rude and wrong from my point of view. Later I was in the hot tub showing my girlfriend’s brother something on my phone and the same employee approached me with the same rude and harsh behavior. She yelled, "YOU NEED TO PUT THAT AWAY NOW! RIGHT NOW! PUT THAT AWAY OR IM GOING TO GO GET MANAGEMENT AND YOUR GONNA HAVE TO GET OUT ." I was embarrassed, yet I put the phone away and told her there’s no reason to be hostile, we didn’t know. She said she wasn’t being hostile, but all 3 of us could agree she was really hostile. After that she came back and said we need to get out of the hot tub, it’s 5:26 and we need to be gone and off of the poop deck by 5:30 (maybe because they were closing the pool at 5:30). My girlfriends brother asked if she was kicking us out and I said "no they probably close the pool at 5:30" to which she responds "NO, YOU NEED TO BE OFF THE POOL DECK BY 5:30". We get up and proceed to leave. I still wanted to go to the steam room in the locker room, however my things were still in the pool lockers. I asked my girlfriend if I am expected to grab my things from the pool lockers and then walk through the lobby wet while carrying my belongings to get to the men’s locker room. The same employee (Linda), walks over and says again "YOU NEED TO GET OFF OF THE POOL DECK NOW, ITS TIME FOR YOU TO LEAVE… ACTUALLY GIVE ME ALL OF YOUR NAMES, IM GOING TO THE FRONT DESK ABOUT YOUR BEHAVIOR." She spoke to nobody else in the pool in this manner except us. I told her I felt like she was harassing us, so I will go up to the front desk and tell them what’s going on back here. I asked for her name and she covered her name tag, but I saw that it was Linda. She rushed to the front desk, grabbed a manager, and 3 minutes later she brought a manager to the pool locker room as I dried off. As I tried to talk to the manager about my experience, I felt as though even she was dismissive of my complaint and probably didn’t file it as she was supposed too. " I began to tell her about the treatment we received when we had our phones out, how she rushed us out of the pool at 5:26, and I tried to tell her about the way she spoke to me as I was leaving the pool deck, but the manager cut me off quickly. She said "she’s just reinforcing rules". I’m no stranger to rules at a gym, but I’ve never been talked to in such a manner by any employee at that gym other than her. I was blatantly disrespected 3 separate times in front of my peers at the gym. I told the manager that I understand there’s rules but it was simply how she kept approaching us and her aggressive speech that made me feel harassed and targeted. That manager said "well just remember to be respectful, she was just enforcing rules, drink some water, sit down, and just take a minute to calm down". I wasn’t even angry, I spoke softly to this woman the entire time and just tried to tell her what I went through. She asked me "do you want to make an official complaint or did you just want her to let the head manager know what happened because I have a lot of work to do and I don’t really have time to deal with this." I said I want to make an official complaint of the entire story. She said "okay, we’ll just calm down like I said, drink some water, sit down, and try to relax." I said " Maam im okay, I’m calm. I just feel disrespected and would like to…" and I can’t make this up guys but she literally walked away from me mid sentence . Hands down craziest experience I’ve ever had at a gym!

Fantastic experience: Much better than most gyms. As a student at WCC I appreciate having this facility for my mind body and spirit. The pools and hot tubs always rejuvenate me. Would love it to be open until midnight but that's the only downside to this place. Staff is friendly and helpful. Will continue to use this facility even when I'm not a student since this facility is cheaper than even the rec center. And this facilities pools are much warmer than the rec center. Highly recommend

Olivia Kreger 9 months ago

Positive experience: Great gym great amenities but the evening hours and weekend hours are very early compared to other gyms in the area. 6pm on weekends is my main issue but even 9pm weekdays is still somewhat hard for people who work out later.

Kara Elizabeth 9 months ago

Positive experience: I have been going to this gym since 2015. I refuse to go to another gym because I am used to a lot of the luxuries this gym offers and its very close to my place of work. It offers great fitness classes, very nice locker room, and plenty of other amenities that you would look for in a “lifestyle” gym. Also, the people who come here as well as the staff are very nice and mind their own business. What is the most disappointing about this facility is the weekend hours. I understand closing at 6pm on Sundays but closing at 6pm on Saturday is absurd to me. The weekend hours should be a bit more extended in my opinion especially since the membership fee is on the higher end. Another con is that some of the cardio equipment is a little dated and wobbly. I think they really should update all of their elliptical and stair master machines or fix them. I noticed they updated some of them but not all of them.

Sam Falter 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Very solid gym. It's definitely a little expensive but there aren't many full-service health clubs in the area, so I think it's worth it. The equipment is never too busy, even on weekdays after work it doesn't get too bad. The locker rooms are in great shape and the steam room and sauna are awesome!

Fantastic experience: Maxine was a phenomenal help to me every step of the way! I strongly appreciate her assistance and will be back for more!! Super knowledgeable and always smiling! These are the people I need in my life! Thanks for the tips on the equipment

Negative experience: Took my little brother who is going to wcc here for a tour as he was excited to possibly join this gym. The male employee that gave us a tour was unbelievably rude to us. Called us “a mess”… great way to get people to sign up for this fitness center… crazy experience!

C. De Getmon 1 year ago

Positive experience: PRO: the equipment is State of the Art; the people who work there are mostly friendly, CON: The management does not 'enforce' their own rules. They have signs all over the facility asserting NO CELL PHONES. Problem is they 'ignore' their own policies. I have clocked people sitting on the same machine for upward of 30 to 40 minutes: mostly using their cell phones and not the machines. This is not an 'anomaly' but rather applies to 30 to 40 percent of the people, supposedly there to work out. Frankly, it is unacceptable given what they charge per month. Unfortunately, there are also some fitness workers who have a sense of entitlement that machines are 'reserved' for them even though they are not using them. I have had one young women--on more than one occasion--approach me from a completely different station to ask me to move on because the machine I got on is her next stop with a client. If the situation was happenstance and far from the norm, I would not mention it. But in the 7 months of my membership, the issue is getting worse and not better. The Management really needs to start enforcing their rules or if they have no intention to do so: to remove their signs telling clients: NO CELL PHONES!

Negative experience: Horrible gym don’t ever go here, they get mad at you for taking your phone out of your pocket to change your song in the gym main area, the fitness trainers are by far the worst. Please don’t waste your money coming here.

Fantastic experience: Great facility; excellent staff.

Joao Caixetas 1 year ago

Positive experience: Easily the best and most complete gym in the area, with a sauna, whirlpool, multiple pools, indoor track, etc. Pricy, but worth it. I do wish they had longer weekend hours. It’s particularly good if you have a flexible schedule and can go around 10am on weekdays — it’ll be just you and a handful of retirees there. The parking lot is always suspiciously full, I think people park there to go elsewhere because it’s free. I wish management would do something about that.

Fantastic experience: I want to to express my gratitude for the incredible experience I've had at H & F Center. As someone who is overweight and out of shape, I was initially apprehensive about starting my fitness journey. However, from the moment I walked through the doors, I've been met with nothing but support and encouragement.

Negative experience: Steam Room and Sauna are consistently too cool. Is a real shame. I used to go to this gym half a decade ago regularly and back then the steam room and sauna were great. A significant blemish on a premium cost facility that damages the experience.

Fantastic experience: Has everything you need. Clean and well maintained. It feels awesome inside and the classes are quality. Best fitness center/gym around.

Chris DeGetmon 1 year ago

Negative experience: Garbage while getting fleeced in monthly expenses. Here is why: If you are serious about getting a work out, find another gym. This facility caters to the social crowd, i.e., people who coop machines while texting, or talking on their phones, or carrying on conversations with their friends. I would estimate that 70 percent of those using the facility are not there for a legitimate work out. The absurdity is that management has painted signs all over the gym asserting No Cell Phones. But they ignore enforcement. One of their own employees who represents Membership Services is a prime offender, Vlad. The guy works out tethered to his phone. Other trainers think they have entitlement to the machines even if they are not using them. I have gotten on a machine a couple of times, when the trainer who is working on a different machine told me they were going to that machine next. The sauna is shut down more than it is working. At least a couple of times a week, there are zero towels in the lockers room. They say the lockers are not reserved, but almost every locker is locked, my presupposition is people keep them locked so they get the locker; even if they are not in the building. The management oversells the membership. The problems named above are only magnified by people who attend for the social experience. If they cannot even get their own employees to follow their rules, why do they expect anyone else will? The positive is entirely rendered useless by the unaddressed issues named above. In conclusion, if you are serious about a 'real' workout look somewhere else. Because you will spend more time waiting for a machine, then you do sweating.

James Hubbard 2 years ago

Positive experience: Really nice facilities, but the biggest selling point for me was the steam room. It really helps with my inflamation; sometimes that's the only reason I go there. Other gyms in the area like LA Fitness have dry saunas too but not a steam room. But it seems like the men's steam room is closed every other week for maintenence issues. It's a shame, when they lose their steam room they lose what makes them unique. I don't know what their problem is, but if this garbage continues much longer i'm going to cancel my membership. Also, the hours suck. Not very friendly to people who workout in the evenings.

Mark Schoenhals 2 years ago

Positive experience: It’s a decent lifting gym, not very busy and the track is nice. Also, the locker room is very clean. They also have a friendly staff and the track is great. I wish there was a bit more in the free weight room but it’s certainly sufficient for a great workout.

Brittany George 2 years ago

Positive experience: Such a beautiful facility.. I always enjoy coming here but I wish they would reopen the childcare center In the gym. It has been closed for quite some time now with no end in sight. It was such an asset considering there are not many gyms In the area that offer this amenity.

Umair Syed 2 years ago

Negative experience: One of the most poorly managed gyms in the area. Frequently will be closed due to random reasons. Facilities themselves are just okay but the management is just terrible. Extremely poorly managed. Don't join unless you enjoy random closures several times a month.

Fantastic experience: Great place overall one of the best gym in Ann Arbor

Bill Zambon 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: I've been a member since 2007 and though the membership has increased and the floor is often crowded at certain hours, I'd still give the place high marks. The staff is friendly. The locker rooms are reasonably clean. Issues with faulty locks on the lockers have been addressed, and the exercise equipment is well maintained. Fees are higher than many other places, but the facilities, hours, and opportunities are worth it.

Sara Samuel 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: What a great facility! I recently joined and so far I think it's a fantastic gym. They have pretty much everything you want at a fitness facility, in addition to giving you the feeling of being pampered - shampoo & body wash in the showers in addition to a steam room, a sauna, and a whirlpool in the locker room. Q-tips, mouthwash, and hairdryers too. The thing that really solidified for me that this is a great place, though, is the smell. It sounds strange, but I love the way this place smells when you walk in! It's a little pricey, but in my opinion, when the facility is so amazing that it motivates you to go to the gym, that's an accomplishment and well worth the money. My health and access to people and tools that can help me reach my fitness goals are worth the monthly cost.

Faith Hopp 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: I want to express my appreciation for the excellent customer service. I have a busy and stressful life (made easier by the comfort of a health and fitness center so close to home) and I sometimes forget things!! I have forgotten my locker location more than once (I now mark my locker with a tag so I don't forget). I recently left my ipad at the facility, which put me into a mild panic. In all of these stressful scenarios, the staff have been more than gracious and patient. THANK YOU for being such a nice and relaxing facility, and for finding my ipad and keeping it safe until I could retrieve it!!!

Fantastic experience: Own lane for swimming - warm salty water - well kept changing room, friendly staff. Discount fees for SJMAA employees :)

Jackie 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: The atmosphere is great. I love the upstairs track to run on instead of running on treadmills all the time. Also the locker rooms are wonderful. They have a sauna, steam room and hot tub to relax in. They also have a really nice basketball court and swimming pool. The only downside is that it is quite expensive, but you definitely get your money's worth.

Negative experience: Poor service by Vladimir. Always working out not respecting long time guess.

Holly Ganger 3 years ago

Negative experience: The actual facility is wonderful but the staff members have such a lack of communication between each other. If you call you’ll be on hold for a long time and you’ll just constantly be transferred from one person to another. Nobody seems to know what’s going on or are able to answer questions about classes.

C W 3 years ago

Positive experience: I've been a member for many years. I signed up mainly for the fitness classes which have all gone down hill. Classes are 45 minutes (previously used to be 1.0 hour) and the selection is very limited, while the price of membership increases. I'm looking around for a better alternative. I don't recommend this place at this time.

Michelle Keen 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Love this place! They provide towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, qtips and water as well as self creating locks, women's/men's only hot tubs and wet and dry saunas- I believe they have a Co-ed hot tub as well in the pool area...and exercise classes, exercise machines and free weights as well as nutritional classes and incentives to work out!

Fantastic experience: Zach Stoney, the massage therapist at WCCTHFC, is amazing and so good at what he does! I highly recommend him!

Fantastic experience: Great facility, all the free weights and machines you could want, plus sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, lap pool, heated saltwater pool, 1/8 mile indoor track. A ton of classes and trainers available as well, at both free and reasonable cost. Friendly folk, individual combination lockers. Nice showers, including handicap accessible ones, suit dryers. Free lotion, deodorant, hair spray, mouthwash. All wrapped in a clean and well maintained package. You really couldn't ask for more.

Fantastic experience: I’m a huge fan of THFC at WCC! The membership cost seems a little high at first but when you realize what all it includes, it’s well worth the cost. Having locker and towel service included is a huge bonus, most classes included, and pool/hot tubs/sauna/steam room. As a runner, I really appreciate the indoor track for the winter days that are too cold or too icy to run outside. I’ve always had positive interactions with staff and have appreciated all the ways they’ve protected their patrons during COVID.

Fantastic experience: I LOVE this place.. the people who work there, the equipment, the steam room, the warm and cold lap pools and the whirlpools.. I also love the massages I've received (you sign up for them).. Zach has given me two great massages (deep tissue) and I feel like a million bucks! (but you don't need a million bucks to join or to get a massage:)...

Fantastic experience: Hands down, this is the best gym in AA! Not only does it have all the cardio and strength training equipment that you need, it’s never super-busy...even at 5:00 PM on the weekdays. Moreover, the custodial staff keeps everything spotlessly clean, and Sabrina and Vlad at the front desk always greet me by name. Keep up the great work, WCC HFC Team!

Fantastic experience: I haven't been to a ton of different gyms....however....the ones I have been to don't even begin to compare to this facility!!! The staff are amazing....everything is well maintained....the amenities are top notch!!!! I could keep going on and on....I was nervous to go back to the gym after covid closures....however when we went back I quickly realized again why we love this place!!! There is a covid "screening process" and temp check everytime you walk in....which seems to double as a contact tracing tool....all staff are wearing masks...plexiglass where it's needed....hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes are at every turn....they have removed some of the cardio machines AND blocked off others so everyone can socially distance....I was also excited that they're still offering classes!!! A sign up is now required to take the class....to maintain class size...but that is totally fine with me....all these procedures add up to me being able to GET healthy while STAYING healthy!!! If you're looking for an outlet to work on yourself and feel great doing it....check them out!!!!

Positive experience: This is a great gym but the hours suck. Currently, they seem to cater to more of an early bird crowd and close ridiculously early in the evening. This is especially true on weekends.

John Cummings 4 years ago

Negative experience: PLEASE BE AWARE: This gym will tell you that you need to do a personal health assessment when you sign up for a membership, and the information which they gather from it they will then sell to a company they partner with. They will not tell you about this until you arrive for an in person appointment to sign up for a membership, at which point they will tell you to sign paperwork allowing them access to your personal health information and allowing them to to do the health assesment. They cannot legally require you to do this, so you can refuse to sign the paperwork, although they will tell you it is necessary to get a membership.

Fantastic experience: Fantastic gym! Wide range of equipment available, great indoor running track. Excellent locker rooms stocked with body wash, towels, steam room, hot tub, mouth wash, etc. They have a pool, volleyball (might need to sign up on a team or something, didn't look into it), fitness classes, and personal training. I've been to a fair number of gyms, the only thing I think comes close to WCC is Lifetime Fitness.

Fantastic experience: I virtually live at this place, been there since before they officially opened. (Does that tell you Like it here)

Fantastic experience: This is easily the best fitness center I’ve ever experienced. Strongly recommend for those that may be considering membership, and just drop in for a facility tour to see for yourself.

Positive experience: One of the luxurious gyms I have ever been. Lots of caucasian beautiful women there which is perfect view during your workout ;) Antiseptic wipes and sanitizers in every corner. 3 group classes room. Acceptable quality soap, lotion, and so on. However, I do wish that they provide antibacterial soap instead of regular one. Person training prices are still a little bit over priced even if you buy lots of sessions. I would have given 5 stars if I didn't got fungal from here on my elbows and knees, parts of my body that I use mostly during workout.

Fantastic experience: Love the gym! It never seems to be too overly crowded when I go (5-7 pm on weekdays, mid morning weekends) and the facility is always clean. The price is a bit more expensive compared to other gyms but all classes are included and can be attended whenever desired without signing up prior. My wife and I particularly enjoy the spinning courses. The indoor track is also great for those runs where you just don't feel like going outside nor going on a treadmill.

Positive experience: Facilities are great. They do a great job keeping things clean and in good repair. A wide variety of equipment. Lots of classes and the instructors are great. The front desk staff are not very helpful if you have questions.

Positive experience: I have been ruined for all other gyms forever. I would be here every day if I could. No one has what they have or offers the same atmosphere. It's just too flippin' expensive. I have started and stopped my account here several times because I could afford it for a few months and then couldn't. Being able to put your account on hold once per year has been handy, but the monthly dues and initiation fees are not cheap. If you can afford it, I recommend it. If you can't, sorry, you'll have to settle for Planet Fitness and lower your expectations.

Fantastic experience: A clean facility with wonderful staff! Someone is always greeting you and keeping towels and cleaning towelettes stocked. There is always someone drying/mopping the bathroom floor so it makes it easier for everyone to walk and not slip out of the showers. The equipment is really great. I have only had one issue with one treadmill after using this facility since 2013, and that says a lot about the facilities upkeep. Well done, thank you as always!
