The Local Gym: Opinions
Negative experience: I cancelled my membership and they took out the 100 dollar annual renewal anyways. I asked to not be charged that as I am not going back. They said it’s automatic and won’t be refunded. I can get charging the monthly if it’s automatic but the annual fee is different. Why would I need to pay that if I am not attending going forward??? I tried to reach the owner. They did not call me back rather sent me an email basically telling me too bad. I have sent 2 more emails since and no response. Bad business
This is nothing more than another customer who is upset they have to pay what they agreed to pay when they signed up. The annual dues are not at the beginning of a membership, and so her assertion that she shouldn't have to pay does not hold up. This member has been there over a year and her annual dues are due. If she had canceled earlier, before they came due, then she could have avoided the fee.
Positive experience: I’m trying to love this gym, but the owners keep the thermostat in the 80’s. If I wanted to workout in the heat, I’d do it outside or book a hot yoga session. Please turn down your AC. Not only is it miserable, the germs are just growing and growing. Thanks.
We’ve been open for over six years, and we have surveyed our members throughout our time being open about what temperature they would like it to be in the gym. Overwhelmingly people do not want it to be cool or too cold. We keep it at 77 typically.
Negative experience: This place is just awful. The owner is extremely rude, and the place itself is small and cramped. I canceled and moved on. There a new gym opening right across the street, I'm betting most will leave to go there once it opens
We love it when people don’t put their real name in their review. All the Tony esses we have have been members for more than five years and have been canceled so this is not someone willing to sign off on their own review. In short, if you’re rude to us, you’re probably gonna get rude back. We are a local Establishment and we know most of our members by name. We’re rude when people want the rules change to fit them or in their favor and we refuse.
Negative experience: Highly recommend not using this gym under any circumstances.
This person is mad because he had a balance on his account because for several months, his payments were bouncing. He then tried to argue with our payment processor that since he wasn’t using the gym, he shouldn’t be charged. We have the easiest cancellation policy in the Jim business. All he had to do was fill out the one paragraph cancellation form and he wouldn’t have been billed any further.
Negative experience: When I was looking for a new gym, this one was very close to my home. I almost didn't sign up, though, because of his replies to criticisms people offered. I joined anyway. So now my experience matches those other people. Do not expect the owner to provide anything like good customer service. He will play the "poor me" card if you have any billing issues. His fee agreement with his billing processor will not allow him to show any flexibility. I was a member for three or four years, paying every month, and only went a handful of times. When I finally canceled, he showed zero flexibility in waiving the annual club fee, which was to be charged at the same time as my final payment. When I asked if he would be willing to refund that fee, his response was "why would you be refunded, Tanya?" Blah, blah, blah. Horribly rude. And I fully expect he will respond to this post in a manner that will only prove my point. Watch and see. He'll blame me. And just to cut him off at the pass, I had one month that my debit card failed because it had to be replaced. I didn't realize it until I got a collection notice (so quickly). He was the ONLY merchant who charged me a fee for that and his reasoning was that he was charged for it so I should be charged for it. He did finally agree to refund me, but I had to come into the gym to pick it up in cash. Other that that, it's a good gym. I like the small, private, feel of it. Really only people there who are serious about working out. So long as you don't have any billing issues, your experience will be reasonably good. Update: Brian's posting of our entire email conversation just proves my point. Thank you, Brian.
The customer is merely upset because she wanted a refund for fees that she owed. We treat every customer the same, that way no one can say we gave one person special treatment and not another customer. Furthermore, we have the easiest cancelation process in the gym industry. If she had been with most other gyms she would have been required to pay out her year contract, similar to the gym a couple blocks away from ours, or she would have been required to pay a penalty or wait till after her annual dues were paid. We have a simple 30 day exit form and whatever fees come about during that time are the responsibility of the customer. When it comes to "poor me", the customer complaining they didn't get special treatment would be the poor me! I should also point out that eating additional fees is not the cost of doing business. You will not find anyone in business successfully making such a claim. Ninety-nine percent of the time, all businesses are going to pass fees on to the customer who caused the additional fees. Our email conversation is below for everyone to make their own judgement.
Tanya,
Why would you get that refunded? First, refunds cost us a fee, and we would already have paid a fee on the original charge. But more importantly, it’s part of the dues everyone pays to be member of the gym. They are dependent on when you cancel, they are a fee that every gym charges and we have the easiest cancelation policy already. Every week we get members who want to sign up but have to wait till the end of their year contract with their current gym. We do not have that policy but at the very least we ask everyone to pay what is due up until their cancelation is final.
Bryan

Hi Bryan,
I just noticed in my QuickBooks that the annual fee of $69.99 is scheduled to be taken out on 3/15. Will I still be required to pay that even though I've already given my notice?
Thank you,
Tanya

Positive experience: I like coming here. Never really crowded at all.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, I believe this is the place for my family. Hopefully, our new gym home
Negative experience: Terrible gym. Management is racist and staff is rude. I hope they never open anywhere again. Please you’re better off going to planet fitness.
Funny, I don’t see anyone in our computers with your name. I have zero respect for anyone who pulls the race card. The local gym has a very mixed membership, everyone is treated equally, and so I don’t believe that you’ve ever had any issues inside the gym. And if you had, you should’ve brought them to management or the owner.
Negative experience: Currently been going to this gym for a while. When I tried to add my sister in law to my family plan, the owner claimed it has to be my immediate family and has to live in the same household as me. No where on the website does it claim the family plan is for immediate family members in the same household. They do not honor what their website claims.
No where on the website does it claim that you can add extended family, who are not living in your household. The rules are in the contract you signed originally. If a gym allowed people to bring in family members from all over the county to sign up for a discount, then you'd have no gym because they would close.
Negative experience: Rude staff. No one can answer questions but the owner and you have to wait for them to return your call. Canceled membership and was charge on the 1st for full month but membership cancelled the 2nd. Just a scam. No air and not clean.
Negative experience: Horrible business practices!!!! They took over local Fitness 1440 memberships including mine and then without permission proceed to charge members. Then when you call their managers they give their words to refund you and then forget about it. Avoid this business! Cost me $40 !
This person doesn't know what he's talking about. We're sorry that you are having a problem. I'm sure we could have helped solve it had he spoken to us. First of all, we do not have his billing information and we did not take over 1440 memberships. It still resides with ABC, who is 1440 biller. When 1440 in Dallas Georgia closed down their corporate office reached out to us to see if their members could finish their memberships at our gyms. We said yes. We are not billing this person and according to 1440 corporate offices, Dave Sprecher was never a member only on a trial period. I know for a fact that our managers didn't tell him that they'd refund his money, We have no ability to refund anyone from 1440, its up to ABC and 1440's corporation. No payment information was shared to us. We simply offered their members a place workout. We've moved about 500 of their former members into our system and helped about 500 cancel their 1440 memberships.
Negative experience: My husband and I were moved over to this gym because the gym we signed up at (1440) closed down. The email we received about switching over and were told we could cancel the membership if we didn't want to continue with this gym. Within a week of getting the email my husband contacted them and asked to cancel. They never asked us to fill out cancellation paperwork or anything, just said that our membership would be cancelled. That was back in July and we have gotten charged every month since then. We continue to email them and ask for them to refund and stop charging us and to confirm that our account is cancelled. We even went so far as to issue a charge back for this past month. They keep telling us that our account is cancelled and they will talk to the billing company about refunding us and stopping payments, but it still hasn't stopped. We have lost so much money to this gym. At this point in time the only thing we can think to do is try to block their charges with our bank.
This person is mad at the wrong gym. The Local Gym simply agreed with 1440's corporate offices to allow members to finish out their memberships at our gym locations. It wasn't handle very well. All we can do is make a request to cancel with 1440's corporate offices. With respect to this orphaned member, he was canceled in October according to 1440. Furthermore, we are not the gym that is billing him.
Negative experience: They cannot figure out how to provide service between two gyms, Hiram and Dallas. You request access to one but they give it to another. You request service but the Dallas office does not know the number for the Hiram office. I have had one occasion when the staff was rude and curt on the phone. This gym had no problem giving me a scan card or deducting payment. I was frustrated but not rude. This business blames the customer and does not take ownership of service.
This member has had his troubles with us is because he was rude to us. He was a former 1440 member. The members from that gym are allowed to come to our gym and finish out their memberships. We couldn't verify his former membership because he used Larry for his first name, they misspelled his last name and his phone number was different in their system. With over 1300 members to move that time it took to get him changed over was longer because we had to track down his membership with 1440's corporate offices who sent us a list of former members.
Negative experience: if i could give it a zero i would don't take your kids here
This review was written by an employee of our childcare who was fired. I won’t go into why she was fired, but this is her retaliation.
Negative experience: We stand with the instructors that have not been paid and ignored!! Do not support this business!!!
Negative experience: PAY THE INSTRUCTORS! There is no place for injustice here. Taking advantage of people in this uncertain times is despicable. Do not tolerate this. Do not support this or any place that take advantage of the work and good will of their staff. PAY THE INSTRUCTORS!
Negative experience: This gym owes thousands of dollars to staff and instructors. They haven’t been paid in months and are being ignored. They should be reported to the GA department of labor!!
Negative experience: My daughter was going to this gym and she told me everything that happened with those poor instructors and how the owner tried to silence her when she spoke up to help them. Do not support this business who is scamming the staff and treating their clients this way!! The owner must pay the instructors what he owes them!!!!!!
Negative experience: I cancelled my membership back in the spring and I as charged for two months and an additional fee. I contacted the gym back in June to resolve the issue of them mistakenly charging my acct. The owner is now involved yet they can’t seem to find a cancellation form. Go figure. Absolutely ridiculous that a staff member working the front desk of a gym that has one person working out can misplace one piece of paper…..but this is by far the most unprofessional gym I have ever dealt with. I really hope I see my money again one day. Until them I guess a report will need to be filed.
We require a 30 day cancelation form. This customer claims to have dropped it off at the gym but has no copy to support that claim. Everyone else who needed canceled has had their memberships canceled around this time was canceled without incident. We're not that difficult to work with, but we do not except a verbal cancelation for this very reason. We cannot verify the date without the form. We encourage everyone to make a copy of your cancelation form the day you turn it in so you have a record.
Negative experience: The issue with this gym like most others is lingering payments. I was a good customer paid on time 15 months but I had to quit the gym in November yet I'm still being billed in March 4 months later. I spoke to the manager tonight and was told if I stop payment she would report me to the credit agency. Do yourself a favor buy your own equipment and work out at home. These gyms are a dirty business. Update I was just billed a,69.99 renewal fee. I guess they will continue until the bank stops them.
Negative experience: My best friend goes to the body pump group classes and raved about them and the instructors. I was planning on getting a membership since I was moving close to her but I just heard the news that some of the teachers have stopped working because they owe them money for months and will not be getting a membership here. My friend showed me messages of the owner canceling memberships when people said something about it and I was shocked with his behavior. Do not support businesses that treat people like this!
Negative experience: This is the most unprofessional business I’ve ever seen in my life. Class instructors have not been paid in months to the point that they have taken a stand and said they wouldn’t do any more classes until they get paid. So they acted like nothing happened, cancelled all classes and came back with some weak schedule since they were missing half the staff at this point. They blocked the instructors in the GroupMe and haven’t been paid or contacted to this day. When I said something about it and told everyone what was happening Bryan the owner cancelled my membership (I was gonna do it anyways) and blocked me from the group too. We will no longer support this business that is pretty much scamming instructors into working for free and then blocking them, acting like they never existed and replacing them with new victims. PLEASE EVERYONE BE AWARE OF THIS!!!
Fantastic experience: You can go any time. The staff are nice. Usually not too busy. I hardly ever have to wait on a machine.
Fantastic experience: They have heavy things and they let me pick them up.
Fantastic experience: Just joined a few weeks ago and love it! Great atmosphere, equipment , classes, locker rooms, etc!
Fantastic experience: I like the gym and the les mills classes offered are great. Not overly crowded like every other gym in this area. Very clean and nice equipment. My only suggestion for improvement is the temperature…gets warm and a little stuffy sometimes.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful people
Positive experience: Great gym. Lots of amenities. With the weather warming up it they still keep the heat on 70 degrees. It would help out a lot if the owner could possibly cut the heat down to 68 or lower or just turn it off all together. With these days getting up into the 60s and 70s it is hard to work out in a gym with such hot and stuffy air. Especially when there is 10 plus people working out at all times in the building. There are also a lot of leaks in the ceiling that need to be patched up too. Water will drip on your forehead while working out on a rainy day. Love this gym just small things matter. Great staff!
Fantastic experience: Overall great gym and doesn't try to be anything crazy fancy which is great. Only issue sometimes supplies are limited when going 1st thing in the morning. Minor like towels, paper towels, etc.
Fantastic experience: Been going here for over a year and I love it!
Fantastic experience: When visiting my buddy, he brings me here to workout. Very nice gym, small in size & does not make you feel uncomfortable no matter what your workout strength is. If I lived here (from TX), this would be the gym to join rather than one of the national franchise gyms.
Fantastic experience: Great group of people in the super early crowd.
Fantastic experience: I was looking for a place where I can have a great workout, and I decided to check the place out...the moment I was greeted, I realized that it was perfect place....I felt welcome, and it reminded me of my powerlifting days!
Fantastic experience: Great experience! I have been working out in this gym with my dad since September 2019! Couldn't ask for a better gym that's local (pun intended)
Negative experience: Then the software comment applies to your processing company. The billing is monthly is it not? so I don’t know why you are referencing yearly billing. Google doesn’t allow image hosting to external websites I would be happy to screen shot the month where I was double charged, and back track to exhibit the fault. That would once again have the last 4 of my card number next to the charge which would show where my card number didn’t change, + sufficient money in my account. No there wasn’t any food or drink, these were whole month charges for what the memberships price was. I feel I did justice to the last point you made by my other writing.
We do not process your payments in-house, nor does any other gym. We use a payment processor and they charge you exactly what your contract amount says, which is entered through the companies software. With over 2,000 members, you are the first person I've heard of with this problem. However, whenever someone has questioned their billing it usually revolves around forgetting when their annual dues are coming out or when their card bounces or has insufficient funds one month and the processor runs the new card or existing card for 2 months the following month. Another common issue is people forgetting how many drinks for food they put on their account. If your payment did bounce or failed to go through a fee would be added and the processor would continue to try and bill the card until the past due amount was settled. If you are curious what you were billed for we can print out a statement, or you can log into your gym account on our website and see each charge made to you in chronological order.
Negative experience: The pure unprofessionalism of the lady at the front is appalling . (I can tell she’s new)I’ve been a member at this gym for 6 years longer than the owner and his employee. The disrespect she came at me was like that of a scorn wife. I’m someone who brought at least 9 of my friends to this gym and when on to get membership through the years . Spoke with the owner few times (Jim) but if he is ok with his employees acting like this then I don’t know what to tell you. Over all you get a good workout in if you don’t mind them randomly charging you card random fees and rude staff. Don’t argue with the staff just walk away they are brainless.
She was not unprofessional you were breaking the rules again and had your membership canceled for bringing non-members into the gym. You and I have had this discussion more than once over the past year, you cannot bring non-members into the gym without getting a pass.
Positive experience: This place has a culture problem and it all starts from the top!!!! Setting a culture and environment goes a long way and it all starts with the leadership and direction of the owner/ownership. Owner, has a negative attitude, poor interaction, and doesn’t meet and greet his members. He shows lack of appreciation and commitment to the members, facility, and the gym. Either this guy is under a overwhelming sense of stress or needs to loosen the belt a little, and smile. There has been some positives in this gym I’ve seen though since joining new equipment, clean, and updated Tv’s.
Positive experience: The past few weeks have been uncomfortably hot when trying to work out in this gym. I even go late at night and they have fans going but it really doesn’t make much of a difference. On the positive side, there is a nice staff and a variety of equipment but it is almost intolerable to deal with such temperatures when trying to work out.
Positive experience: Positive: Communication This gym ight. It's kinda hot though.
Fantastic experience: Outstanding fitness center! Great staff, very knowledgeable and friendly. Always neat and clean. Hands down!
Positive experience: It's close and relatively inexpensive excluding a " maintenance " fee which is tacked on every year.
Fantastic experience: Good Gym
Fantastic experience: Great place to work out. Love the classes and instructors are awesome!!
Negative experience: AWFUL customer service. Racist employees. They welcome racist customers and enable them.
This person has never been to the gym, never talked to anyone at the gym, and doesn't known anything about the people that work. This person is simply is a social just warrior who thinks they are saving the world by attacking a gym and its people who they know nothing about. Sadly, they were told we are racist, and without any investigation or real facts, they decided to make this post. The staff and membership have always been diverse and the atmosphere at our gym is very family & friends.
Negative experience: Responding to the owners comment. I've been married since my membership. Hence the last name change.
We do not show a Courtney Kennedy in our membership system, so this person has never been to our establishment.
Negative experience: They have a racist woman working from them and I messaged them wifh no response back from the Facebook page.
Raisa is not a member of the gym. She found a post she didn’t like on Facebook from an ex employee who’s page still says she works for the gym but hasn’t been there in over six months. What she post on her Facebook page was not endorsed by The Local Gym.
Negative experience: This gym has racist employees. Do not go there if you don’t want to feel out of place or judged because of the color of your skin.

Positive experience: The new owners are great. The place has really been cleaned up since they have taken over. Our only complaint is that many of the treadmills do not incline. I can only get one about 10% if the time. One of the owners gave me his one day but it is annoying.
Fantastic experience: Great gym. Great classes. Nice owners and employees.
Fantastic experience: They are very welcoming.
Fantastic experience: Just became a new member, I was a member previously when it was called Momentum which was horribly managed and absolutely nasty. The new owners have completely turned the place around, it is now very clean and the equipment is very well maintained! I am highly impressed at how it is now!
Fantastic experience: Awesome Staff and Mrs. April The trainer is amazing! Owners are very nice as well!
Fantastic experience: Formerly Momentum Fitness, the place has been cleaned up and de-cluttered. New cardio equipment and group classes. Read their Facebook reviews to see how much better it is now.
Fantastic experience: Friendly staff, good equipment, reasonable prices.
Fantastic experience: Great clean gym with an awesome girl named PJ working there that can help you with all your LocalGym needs!!
Fantastic experience: I’ve been going here for years, it has recently come under new management and all I can say is WOW! The new owners have cleaned it up big time. The kids area had been repainted, re carpeted, and is somewhere I would actually bring my kids now. The bathrooms are cleaner, the equipment is cleaner, you can tell they care. One of the new owners, Jim is a character, he will make you feel like you’ve known him for years as soon as you walk in. Can’t wait to see what else is in the future. Glad these guys took it over.
Fantastic experience: Never to busy and always clean. People seem to leave each other alone.
Fantastic experience: This gym has been my home for the last 3 years. I wasn't really pleased with it until recently. The new owners/management/staff are excellent. They are very friendly and helpful. The new configuration of the gym is hands down the best it has ever been. The cleanliness is top notch. Feel free to come see for your self this gym will not disappoint !!!!
Fantastic experience: I’ve been working out in this gym for almost 6 years and can’t believe how much progress there’s been in a few short weeks. It’s like an entirely new facility! When you open the door it smells clean instead of smelling like a dirty sock. The bathrooms stay clean, the floor is vacuumed, and the music is different! Absolutely love what they’ve done, can’t wait to see more changes at the local gym.
Fantastic experience: PLEASE DO NOT READ ANY REVIEWS BEFORE 12/16/2017. MOMENTUM FITNESS CLOSED AND THE NEW GYM CALLED THE LOCAL GYM IS WONDERFUL!!!! It has been taken over and revamped and cleaned by 2 previous members!!!! It is one of the nicer family gyms in the area offering child care, classes, cardio, free weights and circuit training! They have trainers and boot camp starting soon also!!!
Negative experience: We went there for several weeks because we had no other option in this area that had a "kids zone". However the place is filthy, it looked like they never cleaned, other than take the trash out. Work out equipment were everywhere, a mess. I only came back because we had to train and Katie, the lady that watched my kids was really sweet, but I always walked away beating myself up for leaving my kids in such a dirty place. Some of the customers were really nice people, but other than that, nothing. This side of town deserves a good gym with a kids zone, if they improved their customer service, cleanliness and upgraded a few machines I am sure they would keep and attract more customers.
Nicole, we bought the gym in December of 2017, which is now almost a year and the changes we've made will surprise you, including a revamped and cleaned up child care. If you are in need a gym, please come in and check us out.
